There's also the small matter of the PX100 being open and the PX200 being closed. If you're planning to use these phones on-the-go, the closed PX200 might be a better choice. If you're planning to use them at home, there might be better choices elsewhere...

"On-the-go" means you'd want to look for closed headphones, as open ones are downright useless on public transport. "All types of music except pop/techno" suggests that you're not looking for a bass-heavy headphone. "SQ > looks" suggests you'd want to consider traditional audio equipment companies, rather than fashionable brands Looking at all that, I find it hard to go beyond the Audio Technica SJ series to recommend. In fact, your requirements were very similar to mine last year. I ended up choosing the Audio Technica ATH-SJ5 which had served me well since. You can take a look at the post I made then: ATH-SJ5. The current model is the updated SJ55 which costs around $80. Go to Stereo Electronics at Plaza Sing to try it out for yourself. While you're there, you can also ask the staff for recommendations. Was looking for a headphone stand, so was quite delighted to find this "banana holder" at Isetan... not perfect, but gets the job done, and looks fairly decent as well

hmm... did AT raise prices? SJ11 is the updated version of the SJ1 & the lowest-end model in the SJ series. It sports a smaller driver (36mm vs 40mm for SJ33 and SJ55) and plastic housing (it may not be obvious, but the SJ5/SJ55's driver is housed in aluminum painted black; the rest of the earcup is plastic though.) I didn't audition the SJ1 when I bought my SJ5 so I can't say how they compared soundwise. I tried the SJ3 some years back and it didn't impress me then. In any case, if you enjoy the sound and style of the SJ11 for the price you paid, then that's great. It doesn't matter really what other people think, after all, it's your own ears that are doing the listening enjoy

i think the general consensus is that skullcandy is good for style, but so-so for sound quality. If style/looks is impt to you, then by all means go get them. if sound quality is more impt, then you can try Audio Technica ATH-SJ5 (around $70) or AKG K518DJ (around $120). of course, nothing beats listening with your own ears so go down to Stereo Electronics at Plaza Sing and give your targeted headphones a try, if you can. The staff there should be able to help with recommendations as well. Have fun

I think the usual suspects for bassy, closed, portable headphone are: Audio Technica ATH-M50 AKG K518DJ Shure SRH840 or maybe SRH750DJ

what kind of music do you like to listen to? do you need it for home use or for portable use? What other equipment will you be pairing it with? Are you looking for headphones or earphones? Have you tried in-ears before and are you comfortable with them? $400 is a goodly amount of money and can get you a very good set of earphones/headphones. Conversely, it's also possible to way overspend and get something that's not suitable for your needs.

Almost anyone can tell you, Stereo Electronics @ Plaza Singapura (or Causeway Point) is the place to go to try stuff. I'm sure they'll have something for you... need not be Denons though, keep an open mind. btw... Isn't it kinda, y'know, dangerous to wear in-ears while biking? (I'm assuming you're riding a bike...)

not sure if forum etiquette abt prices has changed... in any case, I paid less than $70 mind you though, these are by no means audiophile quality, but should be good enough for listening while on the go. burning the babies in as I type. The bass seems a bit... 'wild' at the moment. Hopefully it'll tighten up as the drivers get some exercise.

Just bought an SJ5 from SE@PS, for use while commuting Initially wanted to get an IEM, but with decent ones costing rather a lot, i decided to lower my expectations. After all, I'm not going to do any critical or deep listening while on the bus/MRT... Had a chance to compare the SJ5 with K518 and D1001. D1001 was eliminated almost immediately: it's comfy, but provides virtually no isolation. Thus, total fail for commuting use Between SJ5 and K518, the AKG's sound was more recessed while the AT was more upfront. This meant the K518 had more 'depth' while the SJ5 has more 'presence'. Whether after long listening the SJ5 will become fatiguing, I don't know... hope not. Oh, the SJ5 is more efficient as well, being a little louder than the K518. K518 had better isolation due to the greater clamp force, but I felt the SJ5 was adequate. It's probably not a good idea to be totally cut off from the outside world anyways (I should start a thread on how many 'near-misses' we've had on the roads... ) overall, I'm satisfied with the SJ5. It should be able to do all I ask it to do: allow me to listen to music with pleasure while on a bus or train. Throw in the fact that it costs just over half the K518's asking price meant that it's really good value as well. I should change my avatar pic and sig... [edit: done]

ANC3: I can't remember how much it costs, but sound quality-wise, it didn't appeal to me. It felt and sounded like one of those earbud type earphones with a canal-stub fitted on. Comfort-wise, the electronic noise-cancelling pod was a little annoying. CK7: my favourite canalphone thus far and the one I'm planning to buy (if I can get my lazy arse over to SE...) To me, it sounds clear, detailed and relatively 'open' compared to the 'in-the-head' feeling I get with some other phones. It's also fairly comfortable, compared to the 'violater'-type IEMs. Plus, I'm a sucker for the gleaming titanium casing *blush* As many will tell you on this forum, nothing beats listening to phones yourself. After all, what matters most is what YOU like, not what XYZ reviewer liked. After all, it's YOUR ears and YOUR wallet. Choose wisely

Maybe spending $200+ on a headphone for a Sec 3 student is not such a good idea. It's a fair bit of money and liable to be damaged or stolen, especially if used for commutes. Might be better to spend $100 for something that will please your ears, but won't break your heart if you should accidentally sit on it. btw, I'd recommend IEMs (or canalphones) as well. Headphones are a little cumbersome for daily portable use. Give the ATH-CK7 a try

ah, the famous 'death-grip'. As a long-time K81 user, i can say that it diminishes over time. it was really tight when i first started, but relaxed after some time (about a month or so) and now, it's close to comfy. Also, judicious bending/stretching of the headband helps to reduce the grip. it's been posted here before, so do a search.

If you're planning to use either phone on-the-go, I suggest you consider a closed-back design (or an IEM). Open = zero isolation = useless on public transport.

After about 2 years of use, the earpads on both my KSC75 and K81DJ have kinda rotted... any1 know where I can get replacement pads, esp for the AKG...? I've searched this forum, but nothing much has come up... p.s. Headphone forums: The only place where guys can talk openly about 'pads' and not get embarrassed...
