  2. and in poisoning him, i myself got a pair of UM1 hahaha. i cant believe the detail i'm getting from these tiny lil things. portable music will never be the same again. haha. *friend just deleted all non-320-kbps mp3s from playlist hahaha*
  3. okay. i poisoned my friend with the UM1. i say, lets welcome another soul to the audiophile community. hahah
  4. Hi guys, a friend of mine owns an iphone. and he's thinking of getting an earphone upgrade, but with a tight budget in mind. i recommended a pair of mylars. but for a budget of around $100, what do your guys think? i was also eyeing the koss sparkplugs, but i havent been able to find much reviews on them. anyone's got experience with them? or should he go with 2nd hand IEMs? like the shure scl2 or UE metro-fi for instance? or since he's not an avid listener, should he just go for mainstream products? like sony/panasonic in ears? thanks in advance all.

    vinyl clock

heya thanks, but as you can probably tell, its a gift for a friend and it has already been given away. the back part is basically the same as any other clock/alarm clock. the axle is fixed onto the record via a nut. the hands are easily removed by using a pair of pliers.

    vinyl clock

well this isnt directly related to audio. but i guess i'd like to share what you guys can do with old records that are beyond repair. enjoy! (:
  7. yeah haha. the connection on the input jack to the ground wasnt soldered properly.
  8. okay it works now, thanks heady! much appreciated
  9. Hi guys, i purchased a cmoy kit from jaben a long time ago. i only decided to build it this evening as i intend to give it as a gift for a friends birthday. however, i'm facing some problems. the kit that i bought came with a burr brown OPA277P. when i tried it, theres no sound at all. so i tried rolling with the other op-amps that i own. tried the JRC 4556AD and National LM4562. the music does come on, on both channels, however, the vocals seemed suppressed. its like those karaoke machines that try to delete the voice recording on songs. normally, the 45556AD and LM4562 work perfectly on my RA1 clone. but that runs on 18V power supply. so i'm wondering if you guys know what could be the problem? is it due to the op-amp/other components? if its an op-amp problem, where can i get one fast? and i do not have a multimeter cause i lent it to someone. thanks lots!
  10. while speakers are important, amps are just as important. if you have a high-end speakers and low-end amps, chances are, you are not fully utilizing the full potential of your speakers. furthermore, as higher end speakers tend to be more revealing, it will reveal the weaknesses of your amp. similarly, using a low-end speaker and high-end amp will not fully utilize your amps full performance. so for me, its always a 50/50 priority. and yes, your amp will need a phono input and a ground input. turntables need to be grounded using a seperate wire see...
  11. Hi, i have 2 pairs of Russian military grade 6n6p-i power tubes imported directly from ukraine. These tubes are highly recommended from the little dot forums. Do note that one of the tubes do not have the metallic black paint coat at the top of the tube. Comes in box as shown on picture. Tese tubes are also equivalent to ECC89 and E182CC. Selling at $25 a pair and deal only in Tampines. PM me if interested thanks all.
  12. why dont you get the ra1 diy kit instead from alvin1118?
  13. i own the mk2. and i am very happy with how it sounds. i'm running mine through mullard ef95 and it sounds fantastic. if you're starting out and have a tight budget, the little dot mk2 will work for you. as for tube rolling, pm me and we can discuss something out. (:
  14. thats the purpose of a case imo. hahaha. to hide the ugly/messy wires. but of course, thats not the REAL reason behind it.
  15. lol yes. you should see my first cmoy attempt. the post is still somewhere here i think. very ugly soldering. but like what everyone here says, practice makes perfect. i also realise that for the solder to stick to the components, the leads on the components have to be hot enough. if its cool, then it'll just stick to the soldering iron. that said, putting too much temperature on the components will damage it. fyi, i fried 2 op-amps from overheating. but now i use those dip sockets. =D and very very nice job on the casing. 1000x better than mine. even the current one i'm using hahah. keep it up (:
  16. hi, i'm a newbie at hifi too. i'm currently running a budget setup of a sony vcd player -> littledot mk2 -> nad 302 -> mission m71. currently very satisfied with it. my room dimensions are very similar to yours. imo, its hard to have a setup thats perfect for all genres. but generally, for a small room, i would recommend a good pair of bookshelf speakers. if you dont mind getting 2nd hand gear, try looking for the nad320bee integrated amp. if you want to save up on cash, the pioneer a400 is a good buy. theres a guy at www.echoloft.com selling an epos m5 bookshelf speakers with stands for $600. do check out its review at www.stereophile.com there's also another selling a psb stratus bookshelf. you might want to consider them. that said, you need to be extra careful when dealing with 2nd hand items. do your research before you commit, but ultimately, let your ears decide which sounds best for you. for added pro advice, you can check out these recommendations from our local webbies. they also sell quality audio equipment. http://www.listeninn.com/Website/7th%20GUIDE%201.htm http://www.zenn.com.sg hope this helps!

    Amps

why not? i have my little dot mk2 connected to my nad302 amp. although the little dot can act as a preamp.
  18. as the guru heady has said, the ground connections for the pot are combined, joined to the virtual ground. t to help you (1) Rchannel to op amp (4) Lchannel to op amp (2) Rchannel from jack (5) Lchannel from jack (3) Ground (6) Ground
  19. all pots will have 3 pins. one will go to ground, and the other two onto your circuit. um, did you get the correct pot? remember that you have to use one that has an exponential relation. if you use one with linear relation, the volume will suddenly jump even if you turn it very slowly. and it has to be a dual pot. one with 6 pins, so you can use each set of 3 pins for each channel. actually a pot is not a must. my first cmoy amp did not have any pots. simply use the volume control on the player/source. and electrolytic capacitors can actually explode if terminated wrongly. although i'm not sure as to what extent haha. for your stereo jack. the pin at the sides should be the ground. the other two at the end is the left/right. just take a wild guess on the left/right. if the left/right channel definition is wrong, just switch the wires at one of the jacks. for a more comprehensive description, search this forum. i remember there were a lot of cmoy threads in here. and yes, i was. i dont remember what exactly i put, but i also remember i didnt lie my way thru to get samples. only 3 fyi.
  20. you can order free samples from op-amp manufacturers. i got 3 x national LM4562 from national. why dont you check it out? just make sure you get the right kind. the DIP kind, NOT the SOIC kind. but then again, you can always get free samples of each kind. doenst hurt. haha.

    DIY i/c

hmm. i'm not entirely sure. i just bought the plugs and cable and soldered it myself. but i saw the uncle had a soldering iron in his shop, i suppose he does make customised ones.
  22. wow. those multimedia speakers cost more than my pc + monitor + cd player + int amp + tube pre + speakers + tuner
  23. i think it depends on your taste. personally, i prefer the more 'digital' sound of cds but i know of plenty others who are addicted to LPs as well. try visiting stereophile to see reviews of audio equipment. search our local hifi forums for advice and local item favourites. to start you off, heres a few links that provide quite a bit of setting up your first hifi. check out the beginners/second guide here at http://www.listeninn.com/Website/7th%20GUIDE%201.htm for audio tips/speaker placements http://www.zenn.com.sg/Tips.htm for 2nd hand items (make sure you know what you're buying to avoid getting ripped off) http://www.echoloft.com

    DIY i/c

when i went to slt on saturday (stuck in camp from mon - fri), LHS wasnt opened, so i went to an uncle's shop nearby. for 8 rca plugs and 4m worth of cable, it cost me $36 heres a pic of the i/c on my LD MK2. (:
  25. welcome to audio diy (: this hobby takes a lot of perseverance cause you will most probably fail the first few times like what heady mentioned. heres a few links to help you get started. they tell you exactly how to do it and you need not know anything about electronics (although it wouldnt hurt to read up on it) http://tangentsoft.net/audio/cmoy-tutorial/ and from our local forumer, http://williamneo.blogspot.com/ for the case enclosure, i'm using hudsons' eumentol jujubes. you can find them at econ minimarts or guardian pharmacies. however, its made of thin and soft tin so drilling the holes etc will be quite tough. my advice is, go to daiso shops and get small wooden enclosures for like $2. wood is a lot easier to work with. have fun!
