  2. My apology for not replying to most of the mails asking to sell the components separately. It's too much of a hassle to sell piece by piece at the moment as I'm really tied up with work; that's why I'm selling to begin with.

Most of the components and cables are well reviewed and I've attached the system image. The components are well matched as a system for classical or acoustic music.

There are no scratches or dinks that I'm aware of and have very low usage.

    Thanks.

  4. I always preferred speakers over headphones, until I found out what really deep bass sounds like. Lots of people have misperceptions about deep bass. If you've ever been in one of those large churches like Riverside in New York etc., and the organist plays a 20 hz tone with the 32 ft. pipe, that's deep bass, and it feels like the Earth is moving. You can't get that in the house unless you have speakers that can reproduce that tone with sufficient power (very few can), but most important, if you don't have at least a 25 foot dimension in the room and no large open doors or windows, plus very rigid walls, you won't get it anyway.

So when I found out how much that was going to cost me (about $100,000 USD), I gave up and got headphones that could reproduce that tone, for less than 1/100 the money.

That's a very good observation too, about system mismatches.

    I know what you mean.

I listen mainly to acoustic jazz, chamber and vocals, so reproducing the mid range realistically is most important for me; hence my choice of Harbeth speakers. Anyway, as you pointed out, the cost of reproducing full range accurately will be insane for most.

  5. The interesting thing about the HD-800 is that several people I know who own it don't use it much (including me), and nobody seems to know why. It sounds great and has a very good test record, but after using it awhile I gravitate toward other headphones. Currently I have the Shure 940, which sounds like the HD-800, and I don't use the Shure 940 much either. I also have the Beyer DT-48A and Grado PS-500, both very excellent headphones, and I use those a lot.

I'm actually referring more to a preference for speaker over headphone system.

Beyond personal preference, sometimes good phones or speakers can sound mediocre due to system mismatch.

  6. For myself, I also want to play my speakers, but I get home late or i'm out of the country, so i designate the weekends for that activity and it seems to make me appreciate it better, as for daily use even at work during breaks, I use headphones full-size or IEMs, and they go with me while i'm overseas too. So Bro, don't despair, try getting a more portable headphone, if you can wait for the Phillips Fidelio L1, check the youtube, they are my next target.

I waited for the HD800, thinking the very open soundstage with the warmth of a decent tube amp will get me nearer to my Harbeth...good as it is, I still prefer to listen to my speaker system.

  7. I can sympathise with your "condition", wait until you get a family.... :P

He's at work so he has to watch the phone, unless he wants to get an unfriendly letter from his boss.

I already have a family. My son's room was my hifi room, so my system is now in living room sharing space with AV system...meaning I can't play when someone is playing wii games, watching starhub tv or when I'm home too late...

  8. I was obsessed with my speaker system for awhile; trying to tweak it to perfection, but working long irregular hours in a new role at the office meant I couldn't spend much time with them.

Then I thought an office headphone system will solve the problem, so setup a HD800 & WA6 in my room driven by a HRT DAC streamed from my notebook.

However, seems like I rarely finish a single tune before my phone rings or someone comes knocking; forcing me to stop. I slowly lose interest and now both systems are just sitting there...

There only system which I get to listen to regularly seems to be my stock car stereo...sigh

  9. Just unpacked from storage and setup up in my office today.

Media Player: iTune with lossless format

    Source: Music Streamer II+

Amp: WA6 (PDPS & Princess Sophia Rectifier tube)

    Headphone: HD800

    Interconnect: Anti-IC

The rest of cables are generic found in the office but will look into upgrading them plus some isolation devices later.

The sound is full bodied even with the HD800, which is a good start (I hate thin edgy sound).

I think dynamics is good but I'm sure can be a improved with the upgrades mentioned.

  10. Sonq, is your WA6 maxed out? Does it have a more tubey sound compare to Zana Deux in your memory?

Hand itchy to try the WA5-LE :rclxub:

Mine is the regular PDPS version but with Princess Sophia tube upgrade. Agree that the WA5 looks delicious...

I've only log less than 40 hrs on the combo so far and have only one headphone, so really hard to form a reliable opinion. It doesn't sound much like a traditional tube amp at all; quite fast and extended. Fortunately, the harmonics and texture are well communicated like a good tube amp.

Quite hard to pin down your ZD's sound signature that day. Firstly, I think the CA CDP is too dry and your ZD is like a chameleon; sounding very different with different phones; I like it best with the PS1 (tonally balanced and fluid) and least with GS1000 (grainy, edgy & thin).

We should do another small meet:)

My first impression after getting the Linn ADS (Cara 6) was the low level detail extraction, I did not realize how much information was there previously. It also made my HD650 and K501 sing again (foot tapping, PRaT) after living with CEC TL51XR as primary source for several months.

I don't know how to describe the sound signature of Linn ADS  , but after updating to the latest firmware, Cara 9, which delivers more music, more transparent, more details, and more rhythm. Maybe it's purely psychological, but I am happy with what I am listening everyday now. The timbre of the instruments also sounds real and natural. With Grado HP1000, which some said is "boring" and flat, is really musical and enjoyable for extended periods of listening without fatigue :))

    Thanks ^_^

    What happen to your DAC3?

  11. :rclxms: very nice review.

Sadly the only time I listened to the HD800 was during the launch where the amp did not do justice to the phones.

Felt the same way about the Lehmann too; pretty sterile, although the source seems pretty decent at the launch.

Still burning in mine, but sounded promising at 20 hrs on the WA6; at least harmonics is intact (unlike the Lehmann) and tonal balance seems pleasing. There seems to be a bit of edge on some female vocals & deep male vocals are not as sonorous as on my Harbeth.

    Hi Yotiao,

Very informative review. How does the PS1000 compare to your PS1? I remember your PS1 has a really liquid midrange.
