  1. Hi,

For those who wants a cheap and good headphone amplifier to go with your portable devices, you can check out the newly released Sound Blaster E1. During the PC Show, it's going for just $29 online! You need to register if you don't already have an account though.

    Here's the link.

The classic Creative Aurvana Live! is also going for a nice $59.

    Do check them out!

  2. Okay, i am really a newbie in this, but can anyone tell me what is TF 10, and what...urm reshelling them? Please explain this to me, i am really interested!

TF10 is the short name for Ultimate Ear's TripleFi 10 earphones.

I am not sure about the reshelling though. I guess it's to replace the original shells (casing?) that they came in?

  3. Hi,

I am sure most are familiar with this. In most music videos which feature the artiste in a recording studio wearing headphones and singing, very often we see them with one or both hands pressing on the earcup(s). I always wonder if this is for show or is the mix level in the phones so low that they have to press the cups to hear properly? In which case they should tell the sound engineer to up the volume a little. :P

For an example of what I am talking about, see the latest MV for "Home", with the Dr. Dre Beats Audio headphones prominently featured.

  4. I bought the K702 from an Amazon.com seller for only US$250 and shipped it to my hotel when I was in US. That's a whole lot cheaper than the local price. I think even if you factor in the shipping cost to Borderlinx/Vpost/etc it's still cheaper than the local price. Mine has 8 bumps in the headband, didn't find it uncomfortable at all.

BTW it has now dropped to US$244.55.

  7. HMV is presently the best place to go for a wide selection of classical music. A lot of re-issue of past master recordings or varied compilations of popular pieces. Younger generations of artists are not only marketing their skills but also their looks. An attractive image is the selling point now. Sad that classical music is withdrawing back to the concert halls. Let's hope classical music will not be for the elite only.

Sadly, classical music here is on the decline. Soon we will need to buy online. Look at the sad state of affairs at the classical section of Borders.

  8. Actually I am asking for the difference between TripleFi 10 and TripleFi 10 Pro, because I read most on-line reviews referring to the TripleFi 10 Pro.

Too bad, I bought it too early as about a few hrs later, they were offering the Triple Fi 10 Vi version for the same price which I missed. I would love to use the VI version on my Iphone. Now I am waiting for Vpost to ship it to me. I will probably buy the accessories in Singapore as suggested.

I also dunno what's the difference. I totally missed the deal, but a friend who bought 2 sets let me have one of them. It's a steal at US$99. Logitech and UE's website does not seem to list the pro.

Interestingly, the page title for UE's TF10 page says "Pro" but the page itself doesn't.

  9. Hi CK,

Mouz has offered to help get the acrylic panels from our usual source. How much will depend on number of people involved. From past experience, it is about S$20 per set of front and back panels.

    Regards

Sounds good to me. Anyway, any idea how much is a full build of y2 (including cost of y1)? I calculated the cost of the 2 above and it comes up to $33.70 + $21.15 = $54.85. You might want to update your post to include this information for the convenience of the other users. :)

Meanwhile, put me up for both the y1 and y2 (though I don't know when I'll get down to building them). Thanks.

  10. I don't know, it's not stated on the stripper and I've thrown away the box. :P Cost $16 from Koba, so far so good and it can strip 22-24 AWG wires nicely. Never had success with a normal wire cutter for these sizes. Never had success with the cheapo "automatic" ones too.

Now I need a better pair of helping hands. The $8 one from a shop in SLS (1st floor, on the outside sellin Fluke, Antex, etc) I have is a little flimsy. Panavise Jr is nice, but it's $60 here from Farnell.

  11. Hi CK,

Long time no see. Perhaps I am unfair to say made in China is no good. There are quality staff from China too. What I meant are those really cheap ones which are not sharp and don't cut the insulation cleanly at all. The one in the picture looks good. Made in China?

BTW, badbad2000, Koba is closed on Sundays but opens till late on weekdays, 9pm, if I am not wrong. It is at level 3 Peoples Park Complex. Good place, friendly people.

  12. Hi,

    Shunt mode:

    IPB Image

Notice that the signal only need to pass through R-Series and not R-pot. The pot shunts 'unwanted' signal away, thus the name.

    In the more traditional mode,

    IPB Image

The pot acts as a voltage divider. The signal passes through part of the pot before reaching the next stage (e.g. preamp).

There's been some controversy as to which is better, but as they say, ymmv. Try both and see which you prefer. Do note that in the shunt mode, the input impedance varies according to the pot's position (i.e. how loud it is) whereas in the other mode, the input impedance is constant.

    This page explains the connection.

  13. It seem like there's quite a number of Chinese Tube Amp coming along the way, but is it as good for a start?

What is actually a Solid State? (lost my understanding during study)

What is tube power amp and tube amp?

I am rather new towards this, tho.

Solid state = uses transistors or chips for amplification

    Tube = uses vacuum tubes

Tube amp = umbrella term describing amps which uses vacuum tubes for amplification.

Tube power = power amplifier using tubes. Usually this applies more to speaker amps than headphone amps. Most power amps does not have a volume control as this is done by the pre-amp. Power amps is what delivers the power to the speakers.

Pre-amp = provides source selection and volume control. In some cases, it also has circuitry to boost the input levels to a level high enough to drive the power amp. Preamps can also be "passive", i.e. has no electronic circuitry.

Integrated amp = pre and power into 1 chassis

Hybrid = uses both tubes and transistors/chips (i.e. solid state) technology. Usually tubes for the pre-amplification, solid states for the final amplification.

    Regards

    CK
