voxel 0 Report post Posted April 10, 2003 have sent my DT331 to peak fusion for repairation, and, considering upgrade to 831 now 831 is a good, closed one, but I don't know whether it'll be too harsh on my sound card, a cheap creative. I spend about 9 hours in front of my computer everyday so good and comfort sound is very important to me. Need advice on this and also on good sound card available in Sim Lim. Really thx! Regards, Voxel
gryphon1972 0 Report post Posted April 10, 2003 How bout trying some pro sound cards.......think they should easily > 400 bucks.....( something like the one ablaze has). Tthey should have analogue and digital out making it good for an amp or even with a DAC in future.... .Thus doing justice to your 831....
voxel 0 Report post Posted April 10, 2003 Thanks. Compared to pro cards, I prefer to spent a little more on headphones These are sound cards under (around) S$100 on hardwarezone: CREATIVE SoundBlaster Audigy (24-bit) DE - S$116 HERCULES (GUILLEMOT) Gamesurround Fortissimo III (7.1pt) - S$88 LEADTEK WinFast 6Xsound 6.1ch -w/Digital SPDIF - S$45 PHILIPS Seimic Edge Edge (5.1pt) Digital - S$118 QUAD X-treme Theater 3D 5.1 ch - S$68 I have experience on none of them. Any suggestions for them to drive dt831?
Blues 0 Report post Posted April 10, 2003 Philips seismic edge is quite a nice sounding card. Some people said they sound slightly better than audigy, personally I have not heard them It'a a bet between the creative and philips. The fortissimo isn't as good sounding as the 2, from what I've read.
evil-zen 0 Report post Posted April 10, 2003 try out m-audio revolution as well. the audiophile 2496 replacement. There is currently a mass order for it on nartz forum. http://www.nartz.com/forum/showthread.php?...=&threadid=2477
ablaze 0 Report post Posted April 10, 2003 grphon1972: I downgraded from the "pro" cards already. one simple reason: all the Pro cards like the RME Digi96, DAL Carddeluxe, Echo cards, Lynx cards, I think virtually all the pro-level cards use their own internal volume control ie. you can't use the default windows volume control (yknow that lil icon that sits in the system tray to adjust volume) and despite them having much cleaner sound, for me having that volume control disabled totally destroys the convenience I have in my PC setup. right now, I can sit back on my bed a few metres away, and operate the comp with a remote control eg. skip tracks, play/pause, and of course adjust volume! so in the end..best bang-for-buck sound card thats almost there with the pros, but doesn't disable the windows volume control..the Revo! I think the audiophile 2496 is ~$300.
voxel 0 Report post Posted April 10, 2003 I won't spent $750 on a sound card to drive $200 headphones, or anything else. I am sure Even $300 is too luxurious for me. BTW, is audiophile 2496 an higher level card than the Revolution 7.1? ( $90 .VS. 3-week time + local warranty......)
ablaze 0 Report post Posted April 10, 2003 the DACs on the audiophile are different from the Revo's. but subjectively, most prefer the Revo's.
gryphon1972 0 Report post Posted April 11, 2003 ablaze: hmmm.....I dont remember adjusting windows controls...but all I remembered was that it comes with a audio software and that software has the ability to adjust more than just the volume.......the eq.....the reverb.....and eq adjustment can be chosen at any frequency that you wanted...... Hmm....that could be very useful if you have a less than perfect headphones or if you want to boost the deep bass without affecting any other frequency
