  9. The Toys We Play I see a small boy playing gleefully with an umbrella, twirling and swinging it. Reminds me of childhood days- when I played with whatever I could get my hands on. As far as kids are concerned, all things are toys. A kid can cry like its the end of the world over the smallest thing he could not get his hands on. Yet after fiddling it for a while, he chucks it aside, before reaching for the next "toy". Do we truly grow out of toys? Or do they simply take different forms when we get older, as we classify kid toys "childish" and our essentially unessential material wants as mature desires? A joke says the only difference between boys and men is the price of their toys. From toy cars to hifi to sports cars, a filmsy house of cards to an oversized bungalow... same craving, different toys, different price. Even courtship can become a vanity game of toying around when the involved see each other as "playthings"- thus the terms "playboy or girl". The craving we have for the material as we grow up intensifies. Have we really grown up then? What is real growth? Is it the evolution of our simple needs into complex desires? Or is it the sensible reduction of our constant craving? Real growth is then spiritual- nothing to do with physical growing up or the growth of desire. Of course it's totally fine to be rich, to splurge with your own hard-earned money. But the point is- the richest people in the world are not definitely the happiest. This means True Happiness has to come from an immaterial source- Contentment. Contentment is the greatest wealth. Nirvana is the highest bliss. A rich man who is discontent is obviously too poor for himself. And a content person who barely gets by is obviously richer at heart. The challenge is not to remain poor and happy- but to be be able to enjoy what you earn and be glad enough in the moment. If you can be rich and content, why not? Money is never the root of evil- the problem is attachment to it. The challenge for the rich is to be generous with their excesses to aid the needy. Sharing is happiness doubled! If the immaterial (mental) is more precious than the material, should we cling on to what we enjoy mentally? Should we cling to our dear relationships for instance? The immaterial changes too. Only Nirvana is beyond mind and matter, beyond change. How can we cling on to that which changes? To have and to hold is an illusion. Does this mean we should not love? The challenge is to love truly- without attachment, with no strings attached. How do you enjoy a river? It is the nature of a river to flow. A river is a river because it changes. Enjoy it in the moment without attachment- for no love for it can stop its flow. Be one with change, enjoy change, make the best of change- just keep changing for the better... till you attain the best- Nirvana. Final contentment is Nirvana- it is the realisation of the unceasing and selfless flowing nature of the material and mental. Seeing thus, one lets goes of clinging and frees oneself from all dissatisfaction. Nothing has to the power to hold us captive other than our craving and delusions. Time to reflect... What toys do you play? What toys do you want? How long do you want to play? Do you own the toys, or are they owning you?

    Hi All...

  11. Thanks Sipher. Is it possible to introduce flashes on the wallpaper ?
  12. Kaer, The place i got KSC-50 for $30 has sold out. You may want to try Hung Bros at Slim Lim Square. But price would be at least $50 i think. Check the thread on headphone prices.
  13. Philip Glass: Powaqqatsi (Film Score) This is the soundtrack to Godfrey Reggio's film of the same name; a sorta-sequel to "Koyaanisqatsi." Incredibly pretty films with ideas best appreciated by the unabomber in all of us. I first heard this soundtrack, uncut, at his concert in University Cultural Centre at NUS. Try the first 5 tracks, with and without headphones, while cruising down the Pan-Island Expressway at 2am in my turbo-charged coupe on a hot steamy night. Utterly mind blowing was my sensation. The tracks alternate, roughly, between sweet and sincere ethnic themes, and variants of the the monstrous, awe-some, terrible, profound and beautiful "Anthem." As the pieces become popular from this master of minimalist new age composer, bits of his score are beginning to turn up in films. The feeling is damn cool and avant-garde when the freakish music I listen to ends up in movie and commercial scores.
