It refers to the driver (speaker) enclosures whether it is open or closed. Generally, 'open' will make the sound more 'spacious', 'wider', 'airy' but outside sound/noise can be heard & can interfere with your music especially under loud conditions. 'Closed' is the opposite, the sound will seem more 'in you head' but you will get better isolation (eg, travelling in buses, MRT etc). Bass will tend to sound more powerful. Note that this is a generalisation & there are a rare few headphones that although closed in design doesn't sound closed (albeit expensive).

Never tried the MS1 nor SR60 but compared to the SR80. SR80 has better mids so vocals & drums will sound more natural. If you like the sound of the Grado but find it a tad harsh, swap the earpads with the Senn HD414 & don't cut out the hole (or vary the diameter to suit your taste). On the other hand the bass on the 7506 will impress those who want copious amounts of it in their music. DT250 will sound more neutral looks similar to the 7056 but I think is more than your budget.

Do you require the headphone to be closed or open? Will you require isolation from outside noise? As the former is open & the latter is closed design.

Add another to your list & my recommendation Sony MDR-7506. It suits rock & techno, closed design, works well unamped & from a protable source, robust construction and can fold up into a ball when not in use.

I think my shutter count is still fairly low. Apart from some of the stuff I post here, I use mine mostly for family functions, outings, work etc. I don't normally go out with the sole purpose of taking pics, I bring my camera along to record moments when I have the opportunity. I have all my gear in a Lowepro Mini Trekker AW & just grab that bag whenever I go out. I don't leave it in the car anymore as I hardly have anything to shoot unless there is something specific happening.

If the pleather earpads is a problem for you, you might want to consider the more comfortable velour earpads used on the Beyerdynamic DT250 which also fits on the 7506. Not sure where you can get either of these though.

I'm just wondering, is it possible to get the headband pads from the Sennheisers HD580/600/650 (or anything similar)? Maybe it's possible to stick them to the underside of the Grado's headband.

Yep, my mode of choice too 'rips. Except for night shots, there I fiddle about in Manual mode. I just wished I didn't forget to bring along my D70 rig so I could have at least done a rough comparison. The camera bag was in my car's trunk but the camera was sitting on my easy chair at home, DOH!!!

Got a chance to try out a 20D today at a Canon Product seminar. I brought along my CF memory card to bring back the images I took. Judge for yourself, this was the designated model. I really like the images (especially the skin tone) eventhough I was just using the 'Program' mode. This was taken using the 580EX Speedlight & standard 18-55mm kit lens. It didn't feel as tactile in operation as the D70 & the controls require more fiddling about when navigating or reviewing shots. There was also a 350D, which felt nicer to hold with the vertical grip on. Without it, it felt like holding a prosumer camera. The local distributor was offering it as a package at B$1,999.00 with the 18-55 kit lens, 512MB SanDisk Ultra II CF memory card & an extra 90-300mm zoom lens. Got a chance to hold an EOS 1Ds Mk II too. Came fitted with the wif-fi attachment for direct to PC transfer. Very cool & very expensive!!!
