  1. have partnered the 701 with cayin (tube rolled with mullards), xiangsheng 708B, diy RA-1, porta corda mk1 and diva amp. never liked it with either xiangsheng or RA-1, seems like can't bring the 701 to life. interestingly the porta corda, especially with wall wart, can drive the 701 rather well. i actually preferred it to the xiangsheng or RA-1 remembered that it went very well with the cayin, especially on guitars and other string instruments ... diva amp also does a good job in driving it. pity i had sold my cayin, hence couldn't do a direct comparison with the diva amp ... as usual ymmv ...
  2. i have a 720. iirc, the 820 has longer battery life and can play additional format (wav?) ... couldn't find the models when i was at best denki in taka and plaza sing a few weeks ago ...
  3. i second nakedtoes. i use to own a v1 before selling it to try the mod marantz 63. if i'm not mistaken, stereo uses the azur 640c (v2?) to partner with mf xcan v3 for its listening station. i think only alpha audio carries it, either sim lim or adelphi.

    Cd player

i used to own a marantz cd5400 and was using it to drive my first can, a Senn HD202. before i got sucked in to all this with upgradetitis, i must say it was an enjoyable combo. bring your sr60 + fav CD to audition the different marantz cd players and hear for yourself ... i second mackie on KEC. bought couple of stuff from them previously, they r a friendly and helpful.
  5. there's also one few weeks old w5000 for sale in the classifieds ... u may want to check it out.
  6. thank you uncle wilson for your generosity to allow me some time with the akg k1000 the sound signature seems different from the akg 701 (probably not a fair comparison as the k1000 are earspeakers). you can adjust the soundstage and bass impact by adjusting the earspeakers i certainly look forward to more ...
  7. you're tempting me uncle wilson ... i might just do that today!!!
  8. interesting ... uncle wilson, r u planning to bring some k1000 to spore for sale (though it's been discontinued)? more temptations from jaben ...
  9. so are you selling it uncle wilson ...? what amp are you using to drive it?
  10. i hope uncle wilson is not selling the k1000 ... (my wallet begging)

  13. have owned the HF-1 for a shortwhile and tried out MS2i courtesy of Uncle Wilson at Jaben. But more "fair" comparison i had made (same equipment, same tracks - TS Lim modded 63SE, his i/c and Xiangsheng 708B with Xindak pc-02 p/c) is with SR60 that i owned. The HF-1 relative to the SR 60 (reverse HD414 pad) is smoother and more refined warmer (SR 60 sounded "bright" in comparison) better instrument separation particularly with complex tracks where lots of instruments come in play together "tonally" fuller and more realistic eg sound of piano (one of the only instruments i have heard most of my early life, courtesy of hearing ppl practising piano, but no way i can tell one piano brand from another or which is the better piano) fuller and thicker midrange (sr 60 sounded "thin", in comparison) on bass, never took a hard listen as i'm not bass guy ... agree that ms2i is indeed smoother and more refined compared to HF-1 sound signature of sr60 and HF-1 is also very close ... they're same family ... ms2i sounded "less grado" to me ... but don't know how to describe the difference just my 2 cents with my very limited listening capabilities, personal preference and limited descriptive abilities and YMMV

    GS1000

Hi Eric Go n buy the GS1k!!! don't tempt me to go audition it ...
  18. if i understand what you're referring to (it's the one to control the volume from line out). mine came with the shure e3c that i had. you may want to try shops that sell Shure accesorries. hope this helps.
  19. best if you check with TS himself. he occasionally posts on Echoloft i think under his name, Tze Sian (i hope i got the spelling right) and i have e-mailed him myself to buy something from him. caveat: i'm a current user of his modified marantz 63se and i'm not advertising for him or anything like that!! cheers
  20. KEC in Aldephi should still carry it. From my past experience of buying speakers from them, they're friendly ppl. There should be a few other shops selling Marantz products in Adelphi (no experience with them though) - I remember buying mine from Sim Lim Square - can't remember the shop name but i think they were the distributors or something. i recall the marantz 63se usually go for around $150 to around $200 on echoloft, depending on condition (new lenses, w or w/o remote control etc.) can't help u on checking whether the lense is new or not - sorry man. PS: as usual i have no relations to any audio dealer and receive no monetary or other rewards or incentives from them!!!
  21. i saw a TS Lim modified marantz 63 up for sale on echoloft ... $300 +. you may want to check that out (ps: i'm not connected to the seller nor is that my set!). if i'm not mistaken, TS has mentioned that he will provide support services even to those who buy them used (pls confirm this with him personally) imho, better take the "pain" now and buy what you like even if it slightly above your budget (and provided you think it is worth the price) rather than go on upgrade binge later ... ymmv of course, trust your ears and listen to all your shortlisted cdp first ... happy cdp hunting!
  22. Mr Qsilver is the man ... i bought mine from him too. Great guy to deal with.

  24. am also interested to find out how the various tube headmps compare: Dared, various Little Dots, Darkvoice and Xiangsheng (since most are under $300). would be glad to throw in my Xiangsheng 708B for a comparison ...
