If like me you don't want just a single artiste so as to have more variety, you might want to check out those classical compilation CDs. Tons of them these days, some are even packaged as "relaxing". Don't buy those trashy "sounds of nature" things, though - they're absolute rubbish and, if you just happen to like those, can be downloaded free from the net.

Yup I think CDs (even with DVD content) are usually passed with no hassle. Be very careful about buying DVDs, though. One of two of my DVDs (bought from reputable online sellers and sent through registered mail) have never arrived - I suspect they were held up by Customs and Censorship. They used to call people to go down but now they no longer do so but just confiscate the DVD

Yup I've quite a collection of choral music, from all sorts of choirs ranging from the Choir of King's College to the National Radio Chorus and the Vienna Boys' Choir. I also have a few CDs from the King's Singers, which is also one of my favorite choral groups. Vienna Boys' Choir has a unique sound too, though it requires a good, lush sound system or else it tends to sound shrill... There are also some modern crossover choirs like Libera, which I regularly hear on 92.4FM. Most people who wouldn't otherwise touch a traditional classical choral CD might have heard of this one, I think. Widely featured in compilation albums too.

Ah, I suppose you encountered that song on the Best of Audiophiles CD? I did, and it was really good - one of the best interpretations I've had: wistful, smoky and dreamy, which fits the song perfectly!

There are countless styles of Bossa Nova and Jazz, and music, as we know, is quite a subjective thing. So I'd recommend that you go to a place where they let you audition CDs from these two genres. That CD Shop in Orchard (near Lido) is pretty good - lots of listening stations, and the staff there are very patient and don't mind if you try out numerous CDs, though you'll probably want to buy at least 1 after that! Start with compilation albums, of course, and just work your way through.

I'm not sure if shops which sell hearing aids let you do a free checkup with no strings attached, though. They might even have a vested interest in convincing you that something is wrong when it's only a minor problem, just so that you'll buy a hearing aid from them. I think the best bet would be to schedule an appointment at a nearby hospital. It'll be under the ENT (Ear Nose Throat) department, more specifically the "Audiometry" section. The cost is quite reasonable even without referral - mine cost around $25 (thankfully nothing wrong with my ears, so I was very happy to pay, anyway.)

Update: I have bought the 30GB (white) iPod and am now using it with the LD2+ as an amplifier - an absolute delight. The vocals are really very smooth and highs are not as wincingly harsh as before.

Yes it looks exceedingly fishy. "at least i think if it is imitation or fake, then the item is not so profitable because even on google, ebay cannot find any info, fake product also want distribute the info for profits." Perhaps it's because it is a fake that it cannot be found on Google or eBay for fear of legal reprisal?

Yea, I find the 5.5G iPod a bit laggy. I hear, however, that this can be overcome by disabling the "Enable album art" function in iTunes.

I have earphones for portable use so the intention is to plug in the iPod into the amplifier when I get home and listen to it with my DT990s. As such, my iPod will double up for both portable and home use. I'm not using a CDP because I think it is a terrible bother to keep changing CDs - plus, I cannot compile my own playlists. I am presently managing my music with iTunes at 192kbps AAC. It comes up to 7.95GB so I have two routes now: 1. Compress to 162kbps and get a 8GB iPod (same price as the 30GB iPod, I know, but it's smaller). 2. Expand to 320kbps and get a 30GB iPod (I've tried "converting upwards" with iTunes and it seems to work. Hmm.) Any further advice would be much appreciated.

Using it to drive my DT990s, probably with a cheap amp. Any recommendations? Should I get the 4GB Nano (and encode my songs at 162kbps) or the 30GB one?

Hi, I'm selling my Apple iPod In-Ear Headphones which I bought at $70. It's slightly over a year old and remains in perfect condition. Comes with casing and the stock silicon buds. The casing has scratches due to wear and tear and the small circular plastic caps have come off (indicated by arrows in the JPEG picture). It has decent sound quality, with clear treble and decent bass response, and come with 3 different sized caps to ensure the headphones fit. Try the audio-technica series, esp wrt the A700s or A900s. A900s might be slightly out of your $200 budget though. Audio-technica cans can generally be played right out from your ipod without a need for a troublesome and expensive amplifier.

Since money is no object, get some in-ear monitors. Westones, Shures, Superfis and Etymotics are popular brands. Plus, they isolate sound so they are ideal for public transport. However, you should note that playing music at a higher bitrate will shorten battery life. Generally, the more expensive an IEM, the higher the bitrate at which you should play your music. So while a top end model will get you better sound, it will shorten battery life. You thus need to strike a balance between sound quality and battery life. To get a rough idea of prices/specifications, you can contact retailers like Stereo Electronics (do a search on him in the member database) or Jaben (wilson@jaben.net). Edit: There seems to be a discrepancy between your thread title ("closed cans") and your message ("earphones")... generally, "cans" refers to those large DJ-style ones, whereas earphones include IEMs, earbuds etc.

Even the thread has vanished from the Classifieds. A search in the member directory shows that his post count is now 0. I heard that there's some bug that reset his post count. (Huh? There are glitches that do that?) Does anyone know what happened?

Were you from GEP? You seem almost sad that it's been phased out.

The e3c costs more than the superfi 3/um1 (~$150 range). I haven't tried the other two, but I can vouch for the comfort and sound quality of the UM1. With the comply tips that come in the box, you almost forget that they're there after a while. This can't be said about the e3c or UE... although you could of course try fitting the comply tips on to them. Save the difference and use it to buy more tips in future. Or, if you can hear the difference, you can buy a portable amp. And since you're only looking at 3 IEMs, you can always test them out. The UE and UM1 you can test out at Jaben or Stereo Electronics. Not sure about the e3c though. Be careful not to listen to them for prolonged periods... my ears got quite screwed when I listened for 4 hours on a bus trip. Plus, be careful of hygiene. The comply tips are easily dirtied. Other than that, enjoy your purchase!

Heh, sorry for the misunderstanding. I didn't play the DT990s straight out of the iPod, but rather amped with the iCute battery.

I have finally decided that the marginal difference between using a CDP as a source and using my iPod as a source (with an amp) isn't worth the inconvenience of changing CDs... As such, I'm looking for a headamp for my DT990s. (Of course, they don't have to be portable.) I'm thinking of the Xiangsheng 708B... has anyone paired the two? Otherwise, please feel free to recommend amps to pair with the DT990s. Thanks!
