Barradio's mod works by putting more padding material between the drivers and the ears, which logically kills some detail. The Liberators put far more space between the divers and the ears without added extra material directly in between.

Because the iPod is much easily on the eyes and is lighter and smaller. Users don't want an ugly looking player packed with features they'll never use. Take the radio for example. How many people with a 20-60gigs of music really use the radio? How many people who buy Creative because all these features look good on paper actually use them in the end? Ultimately the iPod has the ease of use that many older people want, coupled with the minimalistic sleek design that the younger people like.

I'm willing to bet he'll say yes simply because he hasn't heard of other brands. Rega, Monitor Audio, Wharfedale, KEF, etc. The proper way to do it would be to teach him what to hear for, because it's possible to think that something sounds awesome the first time you hear it, only to discover lots of flaws as you listen to it more and more over the weeks, months, or years. After you've taught him that, let him sample different systems.

I hope you already know that Bose systems are widely considered by the serious audiophile community to be worth less than their asking price? And I'm not just talking about the headphone community..
