i suppose erwin has alr bought the earphone, but i suppose this is what audiophiles do most of the time, give advice to others who may not even be listening. i saw a really great pair of earphones as a gift recently, but mainly for female friends, the audio technica ck1, tried them out too, decent sound, great presentation, not too expensive.

generally earbuds have the normal conventional design similar to that of the i-pod ear phones, whereas those that go into the ear with rubber to ensure isolation, are called IEMs. anyway, i think u are refering to IEMS, since the preference is for stronger base, i'd recommend the mylarones XB, might not be in stock now, but they have precision as well as a heavy base. another would be the panasonic RP-HJE70, go try it out to see if it suits ur friend, gd luck man, hope it helped

ear bud as in iems or ear buds as in normal ipod earphones?
-
this is gonna be a little out of context, but i think it may be a better option. I would say buy an portable amp for ur friend, some of them are around that price range, but it really improves the i-pod sound alot, something like the i-basso t1/t2. But if u really want a headphone, i would suggest Yuin pk2 or i-grado, those thing sound great, in the case of the i-grado, it wouldn't be as intrusive as an IEM.

i got mine at hung brothers at sim lim about a year ago for $30, did a little bargaining, but it pulled off
-
if you normally use it at home, then i suggest u get a headphone, as it is not as portable as earphones or IEMs. if u dun mind open headphones, go for the grado 325i or alessandro ms2 but around ur price range
-
beyers, DTX 50, more bassy, some consider it too much bass but its other than that its aound the same range
-
refering to the topic on clear, bassy and comfortable headphones, i'd recommend i-grados, well within ur budget, the only thing is that it is open. If u're decided on isolated ones, then go for the mylar xb
-
i highly recommend the MS2i, its not as warm as the RS2, but provide a much better sound stage than the SR80. Its also quite close to ur price range without going over.

s$80 or us$? if it is in sing i'd take it
