  1. Do you need isolation? If not why not try the MX400 at that price range? Or up a bit and get the KSC-75?
  2. I personally haven't tried the technics 1200. Seriously, I haven't heard of it, but I do know that the sony MDR v6 is widely recognized as a good pair of phones. I have tried it before, and it indeed sounds pretty nice. Problem is whether you can find a place to buy it.... Actually why not open your options to other headphones? What budget do you have and what requirements do you have?

    pa2v2 amp

I think you might have given an awkward analogy. Everytime you go from line-out to headphone out or speaker out, you go through amplification, either by a preamp+power amp OR an integrated amp, so basically your headphone amp can actually be considered an integrated amp. The use of a pre-amp is such that it increases the output from the line output, as most power amps has an input sensitivity of probably a few volts higher than the output of your line output. Hence the increase in fidelity as ehlim has said. However, if the input is not that sensitive to the line output voltage, one can very well do without a pre-amp provided his source has a variable line output, and still maintain high fidelity. I recall Mackie had a review whereby using the Marantz CD6000ose (was it?) and a pre/power amp setup, he actually discovered that removing the pre-amp and controlling the volume through the variable output of the cd player has brought him much increase in fidelity for that particular setup. As such, without a headphone amp, one listens direct from the line out (?!), whereas without a pre-amp, a source-power amp setup is still very much viable, granted the above-mentioned requirement of a variable line-output, and a power amp which is non-picky about input voltage (i.e. might not improve much fidelity with a pre-amp in place) is met. Hope I got my facts right. Anything please correct me. No offence taken
  5. Long long ago in a land far far away, I had a pair of headphones -- the Beyerdynamic DT431. And this is how the story began: After using for almost 2 years+, with some spare cash in hand, I thought, why not get a new pair of ear cushions? And so I did. Unfortunately, I was totally unaware of what beyer had in store for me, indeed I was in for a huge surprise (disappointment). Upon inspection of the new pair of ear cushions, I found them thicker, and the finish was rather different. It reminds me of the ear cushions which came with Rameish's pair of DT431. I still remember vaguely its appearance. I thought mine was the original ear cushions then. How wrong could I have been. To cut the story short, I replaced the cushions and guess what? The sound totally changed. Everything sounded so laidback, everything in the lower frequencies became so unapparent as compared to before. The biggest problem was that the highs became so piercing and irritating. Sure the imaging was better, but what use has it when I enjoy my music no longer? I gave it one night, I placed the headphones around my bookshelf speaker, hoping to loosen the pad up, but there was little difference. I tried pressing the headphones against my ears, and sure they sounded better, more forward, the lower registers more pronounced, but the air that used to be there still was missing. I gave up, and changed back to the old pair of cushions, and everything sounded so right immediately. I don't know, probably not only do i own a pair of rare headphones, I own a pair of extremely rare cushions for the headphones as well. And the cushions are wonderful. I have no idea whether I can ever find such a pair of cushions anymore, but if i can't, I'm more than willing to wear this pair of cushions. Right now I have placed the new pair of cushions under some weight. I'll give them a few days and see what comes out of them. And so the story ends, some food for thought for everyone.
  6. Selling a Marantz CD6000ose. Second owner to this CDP, first owner was Rameish. Perfect working condition. Comes with original remote control. Cosmetics 8/10, everything looks good except the top a bit worn. Not obvious at all under low light condition. Asking $280
  7. Its pretty detailed from what I remember when I tried at razer's house. Pretty nice sound, the typical closed headphones sound. Something like the PX200 but more refined. If my memory serves me correctly regarding the PX200 sound.
  8. I've tried the E5c recently. I've also tried the Etys ER-4 sometime ago. IMO, the E5c was way more musical. The ER-4 give a very "boosted detailed" kind of sound. That's not to say the E5c were not as detailed, in fact it was more detailed, except it puts the details across in a more subtle way. I also felt that the E5c sounded less constrained in terms of soundstage. Wonderful for a earphone I would say. The perfect travel companion if not for the price. Edit: Wonder if it would help if you removed your specs while wearing, then put on your specs after your e5c is on.
  9. Rock music? I would say quite OK. If i had a choice I would have gone for the fugly Aiwa V743 if it were for rock. Too bad it seems even the last shop which sells them has thrown away their stock or something (its really old already). Or else, for earphones, really not much choice. As for the magnet, I have no idea. Please do not be bothered by that, sometimes it's a marketing gimmick. Bigger transducer, and using neodymium magnet does not equal better sound. Some food for thought.
  10. Actually burn in has little more meaning than than chalking up usage time to season the equipment. http://www.sgheadphones.net/index.php?showtopic=2358&hl=burn http://www.sgheadphones.net/index.php?showtopic=169
  11. Sennheiser MX400 I would say. Not sure if this offer is still in stock. Check it out though: http://www.sgheadphones.net/index.php?showtopic=4035
  12. Can't help but agree. Sorry razer!
  13. Anything Audio has the whole range of beyers, a few ultrasones (probably wise to steer clear but ymmv), AKG K501. Did i miss anything out? I haven't seen any audio technicas there.

  15. I happened to be at SLT today and I dropped by to ask robert, and he told me that the 83803 costs 20 bucks a metre. the Mk plug $10.
  16. Let's not say they dont need an amp. Every headphones/earphones deserve an amp to improve the sound quite greatly, it's just that IEMs' sound improve much less with amping. Of course IMHO you won't find anything missing without an amp.
  17. Actually IMHO, adding output resistance itself changes the characteristics of the amp. According to what I've tried with my system, adding 120ohm was quite a change in tonal quality for my DT931 headphones. Almost immediately you can hear that the highs are less, the bass increases, almost like a tonal shift towards the lower frequencies, and 1 thing in particular which kind of disturbed me, which is that the sound becomes very much laidback. More so than without the 120ohm in place. I've tried with 82ohm, yielding similar results, albeit to less effect. My guess is probably that you prefer a rolled-off high frequency, and somehow attribute it to the "cd-player-ish" sound, or perhaps to a similar effect, an extremely laidback sound. Actually a more laidback sound, IMO, sometimes gives you more of a feeling akin to listening to speakers. The issue might be there My guess is that you have confused the change in sound brought about by increasing output resistance as the shifting of the sound from "cd-player-ish" to "amp-ish" (Oh well what a description i'm using LOL) BTW you can try using a CDP with variable line out, and decrease the output, then increase the volume pot level of the amp, and see if the sound is more to your preference that way. My guess, not exactly, as reducing the output, at least for my case in the CD6000ose, does change the sound characteristic a little, ever so slighlty, but is almost negligible when compared to increasing the output resistance of the amp. Anyhow just my 2 cents based on guess-work. Hoping maybe to shed some light, some food for thought perhaps? Oh yes, must not forget, YMMV!
  18. Lily 陈洁丽 a must-try! superb recording as well.
  19. Albert has just told me that he is giving us forumers a one-off sales for Shure earphones, i.e. limited stocks only. e2 at 160 e3 at 340 e4 at 440 e5 at 690 e4 and e5 seem to be v good buys
  20. It seems that Anything Audio has brought in a whole range of shure in-ear phones. The price I have no idea as yet.
  21. You can probably get hold of a Sony D777 if you don't mind the shorter shock-protection timing. The headphone out is very musical, and after hearing it maybe you will decide that your portable amp go into the rubbish bin and stick with the D777 headphone out. (depending on the portable amp you have, and its matching with the headphones you are using. If you happen to have a KSC-35, probably the portable amp goes into the incinerator). LOL. YMMV though. If I'm not mistaken, Matbon0013 is selling off his D777, you can PM him.
  22. Did you try it with the headphone test setup at AA? The amp there is pretty good, and can drive many cans well enough to give you an idea of the general performance/signature of the cans. A good choice for audition. IMHO, you test for the cans you love most, then you build your system around the cans. Match your amp to the cans you like, and not forgo the cans if it cant match your amp. YMMV. From what I see, you probably want something with lots of bass. You probably can try out amps with JRC4556 op-amp.
  23. Those who like DT150, should give DT660 a chance. At a price which you can get lower than DT150 @ AA, it surely is a good deal. To me they sound pretty alike, tonally, though the DT150 offered better details, and more upclose. The DT660 was more natural in every way, whereas DT150 sounded kind of boxy.
