  1. The Loth-x Amaze is quite good IMO. I have heard them driven by a 300B SET, 4 watters playing some dire straits and jazzy stuff and it sounded nice. No deep punchy bass (usually full range spiks dun do that either) but very pleasant and relaxing sound. I have no idea how it will sound with Cyber30 amp tho, but the best way to find out is to bring your amp and test drive them. I have spoken to some loth-x guys and they are nice people. The last time i heard them was a couple of months back and it was at burlington square and there should be one in adelphi as describe by N@Z. If you are at Burlington square, you can also drop by Martin Electronics. Martin custom make some full range speakers with Lowther drivers, they are not cheap but you can get a idea of what is the characteristic of a full range sound. Mrs Vong is very friendly and never pushy, they have some nice DIY kit as well. Happy hunting and enjoy the music.
  2. That's a senn pmx-60. While having only a brief session with the PX-100 and PX-200, I find the pmx60 shared the similiar characteristic with the px-100. The grados on the other hand is in a different league, very good for the price. Detail and bass definition is pretty good especially with the head amp on.
  3. CMK, av98m sorry for the delay posting of the pics, just got my camera back. Here are some pics of the mess we created while at av98m place, I guess all of us enjoyed the session. It's my dream student room to have A little summary of the stuff that we tried. (av98m, help me to list the models number. Still new to headphone stuff, I might provide te wrong info ) Headphones: Grados, Sennheisser, beyerdynamic, etymotic ... Source: iRiver SlimX, Panasonic, NAD. Amp: Headsave Tempo, Mint ?, Musical Fidelity X-cans.
  4. Hi Blues, I guess I shared the same thoughts as you, the source contribute alot to the end music result. Rubbish in rubbish out. I have heard the CD5 (many times) and the CDX2 (only once, naimed ). Until today I can still remember the characteristic of that CDP. If you love groovy, rthythmatic, 'in your face' music presentation you will like the Naim. While I have also heard the EMC-1 from another good friend (he has sold his EMC-1 and got a Meridian CDP now), my impression is that it a good CDP as well which is more towards toward the warm and slower side, especially good for vocal and Jazzy tune. Ultimately, It's more of a personal taste. PM me if you are interested to have a listen to a Naim system.
  5. Hey, thanks for all the advise and links. Appreciated. Now I am flooded with options. av98, Yes, the iRiver comes with a line-out option. I am interested in the Headsave, any chance I can have a listen to it? tropicalrips Cmoy getting very cool, I wish i had the skill to do that. Anyway, I am a Naimee and I have always like the flat and punchy characteristic of the Naim hifi amp. The PCDP on the other hand let me have very intimate relationship with the music(with tiny speakers on my ears) and I would get better results thru the use of a good portable headphone amp. Anywhere I could have a audition of those portable you all have mentioned?
  6. Hi Everyone, I am new here and first of all a Merry Christmas and Hopefully a good Year to come. I am also new to this headphone thingy, just got my iRiver PCDP and my first so-called headphone - a sennheisser PMX60 Reading thru the thread on portable headphone amp really got me interested. My first question is which amp should i get if my musical gene is more towards the rock side, i need something that provide me the punch and kick and must be portable. Budget will be up to $300. Diy will be great but I guess I have never been good with my soldering and electronics skill.
