  1. David Is portability an important concern? Is comfort an important concern? Do you listen in an isolated environment? or in crowded places where external noises affect your listening? Are you very critical about sound quality reproduction? These questions will help to give an indication of the type of headphone you are looking for.
  2. They don't have the A900, I asked them today.
  3. BTW, I was free, and kinda itchy backside, so I dropped by Retrospective today and heard these cans : AD10 A1000 L3000 The AD10 leaked. Sounded decent, good detail, but lacked the bass resonating chamber of the other 2 cans. Highs were airy. The A1000s were pretty good, very detailed, smooth, excellent separation. A more refined version of the AD10. The OFC copper voice coil and lead wire proving to enhance the tonal balance of this can. The L3000 is a whole different kettle of fish. By far the most refined, having the detail of the A1000s, plus the added refinement of communicating the essence of the music. Amazingly good. Unfortunately the price is also very good. Although my first experience with this can was nothing to shout about, I am now convinced that this is a very special headphone, one that can keep you happy for a long time. Note that these observations were done over a short period of time with the cans not fully run-in. Overall, I liked the A1000, but I liked the L3000 even more. Not sure if a tube amp driving the A1000 could challenge the L3000.
  4. Hi fuwen There is another serious collector of classical music, Ian on the echoloft. I think we can/should arrange a meet for fellow classical music lovers. What do you think?
  5. Retrospective is on the 2nd floor of adelphi. The PX200 is a warm sounding can with a rolled off high, so its not bright. Mids and bass are pretty good. Grado has its own signature sound, which is typically fast, lean which gives a sense of detail. As you go up the line, the sound gets more refined and detailed, and also more expensive.
  6. If that's the case, get the Senn PX200 only $90. or checkout one of the AT cans from Retrospective, much more friendly and you can try on the spot.
  7. Are there alternative locations? I'll check on the airconditioning on a Sat afternoon. Usually its quiet on Sat cos we don't work Sat. Food is not a problem as there's 2 food centres below plus Macs, KFC, etc... The conf room can only accomodate about 12, but there are other rooms which could be used too.
  8. I will not mince words, I was looking to get the SR325 from MBD. Called them and got quoted S$520 which works out to US$305 @1.7. This is already higher than the list price quoted in the US(US$295), which are usually discounted and have return policies if you are not happy with your purchase, no questions asked. In fact there are many, I repeat MANY, mail order shops there which sell it shipped for US$265. Why in the world should I patronise MBD? Is it because they are the sole distributor for Grado here? Their service is excellent? They offer the same return policy that they have in the US? Right now I in the mind to order the item straight from the US and have it sent to a friend who's returning to SG.
  9. Hellow, what rent? Just don't tell my boss...
  10. 2 is the closest to my portable rig : $235 for the PCDP and $90 for the PX200 and I'm happy. For a bit more on the cans, you shd investigate the Grados if they(MBD) are not sooooo fussy with auditions and maybe a portable mint meta var.
  11. working out? sorli hor, me no understando wat er u mean er.
  12. Seems like their service level is getting worse.
  13. Err... what happened? I thought there are pp interested and mentioned support for this? No comments?
  14. Also listen to the Grado SR80, and try to see if you are comfortable with the fit.
  15. We can use the conference room, there are power points, and yes, I do have my own office.
  16. I don't mind getting the ball rolling, but I don't know where else (assuming its not SPGG) to hold it. My office on a Sat?
  17. This is very good : Composers Sibelius, Walton Artists Akiko Suwanai, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Sakari Oramo 470 622-2 PSA
  18. I think the main problem was to get the particulars of everybody before going into SP. If we can find another location without having to get the particulars, would that work out better? Of course, it would be better to register those who are coming, so that there's no "additional 3rd parties" who are not supposed to be there.
  19. Calling mods, are we going to organise another meet? Think its about time.

Got mine from a 2nd floor shop, can't remember the name. Got the Imp400 at $235, so the newer 450 shd be a little more or same price.
  21. For Dvorak's New World Symphony, I got this instead, and its very, very good, both in terms of performance and recording quality : The Romeo and Juliet Overture is also very well performed.

    How important is

As Rameish mentioned to me, it depends on the impedence of the can in question. If the can's impedence relative to the adaptor is 1:3 or more, then there will be an audible impact. So the 120ohm adaptor will work with cans around the 40ohm mark, ie low impedence cans. lekguan, the level of detail due to the different position of the vol pot is a well documented one. Almost all vol pots sound their best in the 10-2 o'clock position. The vol pot is an attenuator - ie it cuts the output to the amplification stages. Depending on the quality of the pot, this is always detrimental to sound quality in varying degrees. So the less attenuation there is, generally the better. Currently the plan is to have one of the outputs on the Melos loaded with a 150ohm resistor, and upgrade the parts and replace whatever needs to be replaced.
