  1. try listening without any eq. the way music is meant to be heard
  2. NO. Power conditioner doesn't come with cable AFAIK. so to get second hand power filters with cable supplied is quite rare at under $100..
  3. Hmm, had the px100 like 4 years ago. Remember that the PX100 was the "best" headphone I've heard in the under $100 category. Comparing to my current k81s, the k81 seems to have 1.6x more forward, emphasised bass. Seems like it has a very strong midbass where the px100 were more shy. Prefered the bass on the px100 but the k81 beats the px100 in everything else.. I getting to love my k81djs more and more for portable usage unamped..
  4. I did it in the evening, with my sockets plugged in with whatever lamps I have in my room. So i only need to look at my room for light coming out. you can use those non digital radios/fans/electric alarm clocks as indicators also.
  5. Well, it's quite straight forward to check the wiring. First, I turn off the all the circuit breakers from the outside, leaving only my room power socket intact. Then I tested all the sockets in my room to see which is dedicated. seems lucky for me only 1 of the 4 sockets is turn on and not sharing any sockets at other places. Opened up the others to look and found the other 3 to be wired from elsewhere. So slowing flicking 1 switch at a time, I came to discover the circuit breakers for my lights were suppling the other 3 sockets also. Sounds abit hardcore but I did it in 20mins. lol *THOSE UNSURE/with NO AC ELECTICAL KNOWLEDGE, PLEASE DO NOT PROCEED WITHOUT SUPERVISION*
  6. That's very true. A stuck my multimeter in, and the voltage at my house is very stable at 220Vac. It's quite stable versus ROC and thailand when i was there during my NS where I had problems with stable electricity for all the electronics. Even mil spec power cables is pretty useless when you have poor source. Well, in the end I gave up on the idea for any power conditioners since the supply at my place is quite ok.
  7. Haha, I was in the same boat as you. I had only 4 wall outlet in my room. Went around opening the outlet to check if it was star wired, den took multimeter to test which outlet had clean signal by flicking all the switches of high drain equipment. Found the main socket of my room which provided the cleanest signal (the other 3 were sharing one line rerouted from the lighting wire sockets because it is an old house) and enjoying the dedicated wall socket. I took back a furutech powerconditioner from work, and actually discern no difference on the amp outlet of the socket. Upon inspection, the amp outlet of the conditioner had no filter. Only for source were there some kind of caps and a resistor. So power conditioner is of no use for amps. There's another device, forgot the term, where you regenerate a clean ac power just for the preamp and source. I think that would be better. Another thing I wanted to try was to build a DIY quietline to be put near high drain devices. Seems to "quiet" the electrical signals from what I've read at echoloft. But those noise suppression caps are hard to find.
  8. One k181 can buy 2 or maybe 3-4 k81 DJs. The price at hung bros was quite a turn off I remembered. And they are hugh. So k81 is bang for buck. MS1s is definately better, but for portable use, k81's closed design makes for more enjoyable listening in noisy environments.
  9. Hmm, thailand.. I'm not too sure, but I think I saw alessandros in Siam Paragon Bangkok. Maybe you can check it out?
  10. Not sure what XLO stands for, but it is an audiophile disc with audio tones and music meant for burning in your phones. It exercises the drivers and system by generating specific current for magnetising/demagnetising IIRC..
  11. Yesh, the finish of the ultimate link doesn't look that pretty. Anyway what cables are within? I'm sure people are interested to know before plunging. Actually in terms of getting a neutral cable with good extensions on both ends, why not get Neotech's OCC cable? I have very good result with four runs litz braided IC of solid core pure silver wires from Neotech. It's is very revealing and might be "too bright" for some setup, but it's actually because of the level of clarity it gives to the highs, hence some people might find it bright.. I like this for my tube setup. For a more neutral or IMO wamer option is to have 4 strand Pure copper occ wire. Using this combi for my portable setup and it's is very flexible. Running pure silver as leads and PCOCC as return path as IC also can. Maybe stereo can make them?
  12. Centralise location would be Adelphi. Jaben. Lvl 4 but jaben is in one of the inner lanes. The next place would be Stereo electronics at Causeway Point near woodlands MRT.
  13. yup.. in short, for YES. with your other half NO
  14. NO GO lol. I have a set of pioneer dvjs and denondj and they are A BIG NO-GO for anything other than dance music! SIMPLE AS THAT. the sound quality is just not the same. the playback from them goes thru a hardware and software pitch and bpm control. sound is a little unnatural and closed in compared to any non DJ cdp. But quite fun playing thru speakers and mixing. Imagine flanging teresa tands vocals on a bassline at 160bpm, or remixing a few classical pieces lol. btw, for cd mixing, try to stick to pioneers, staton and denon. numark and vestax doesn't have as smooth buttons and faders.. which can f up your set while mixing.
  15. k81DJ is designed for bedroomDJ mixing usage. Not too useful in clubs, maybe small pubs lol. It's bigger brother, k181DJ is the club version anyway. Portabilty isn't an issue with the k81. It's 32ohm and drives well from the headphone out of both my ipod and pcdp. It doesn't require an amp and amping it makes little difference. The k81 imho beats most cans under $200 for closed designs. It's imaging and soundstaging is superb (for closed cans). Bass is hugh and depending on the music, can be good and bad. I hate bass, but when traveling, the bass sounds kinda good when travelling in noisy mrts and buses. It's my choice for portable usage versus the MS1/k701 for home/work. In short, the k81 is 80% of MS1 + BASS unampped. I tried a bose triport at work today, and I understand why people like'em. It's like having subs on the go! The bass on the k81Dj is about 70% of the triports (damn and I thought the k81 was too much). but unfortunately, the triports sounds like cheap $20 cans in other aspect. No depth, no staging and sounds muffled.
  16. rockboxing your ipod wont void it's warrenty. It's a software installation that boots ipod into ROCKbox and leaves your ipod firmware intact. Dun like it, you can just delete the file from your ipod and wala! Back to original! the most important thing now is to get your earphones/headphones decided first. If you are going to get UM1, there is no need for an amp. simple as that. Unless you are driving a high impedance can/iem, an amp will yield only a little more juice/slam/clarity for the um1, which in my opinion, the cost could have been put to buying a better phone/can. Unless you intend to own a variety of headphones with different impedance, then invest in a good one. Else you'll end up buying on impluse and selling it away on classified here.
  17. CORRECT! If you head on down for an audition, and feel that the more expensive phones don't sound better to you, then do not be "pressured" to buy them because of what sgheadphone forummers say. Most important is personal enjoyment. Headphone is a personal love affair between you and the music. Buy one than let's you enjoy the music. No point spending too much on something that gives you 1% improvement of music from your current grado sr60 right! Only when you music taste has developed, and when bigger phones do make a difference, then it would be time to invest.
  18. In this "hobby" (I'd rather call it Addiction LOL), no one can give the best advice other than yourself. Bring your source down and try them at MBD (adelphi) Stereo (Causeway Point) for the Grados and Jaben (adelphi) for the MS2i.
  19. Hmm, maybe can try asking SAE (School of Audio Engineering) Quote from a critical listening sch overseas: " No matter how good a song is or how accomplished the musicians playing it are, the wrong mix can leave an otherwise beautifully crafted song sounding unprofessional and unpolished. Critical Listening provides recording musicians and aspiring producers and engineers with a better sense of the mixing process, and develops the ability to hear and identify the key features of a well balanced, artful and professional-sounding mix. Through weekly training drills, analysis of classic recordings, and comparative studies of different styles of mixing, you'll learn to identify width and depth, frequency range, dynamics and the different mix approaches used in various musical genres. You'll learn to hear and identify techniques such as panning, alternate types and uses of reverb, delay, compression, phasing/flanging/chorus, and different types of distortion. The course also explores various types of instruments and arrangements, distinguishing between Telecasters, Strats, and Les Paul guitars, single versus dual coil pickups, direct versus miked acoustic and electric guitars, tremolo versus vibrato, Rhodes versus Wurlitzer electric pianos, and more. The course will also take you through the steps to turn your listening space into a more critical listening environment. Whether you are a recording musician looking to ready your music for CD, or an aspiring producer or engineer, you'll not only learn what elements are most important in a mix, what sort of arrangements you should be working towards, and how to optimize your mix to make your song as compelling as possible; in the process, you'll open your ears up to a whole new level of music listening and awareness. By the end of this course, you will: hear width and depth, frequency range, dynamics and the different mix approaches used in various musical genres. identify techniques such as panning, alternate types and uses of reverb, delay, compression, phasing/flanging/chorus, and different types of distortion, distinguish between different instruments, pickups, miked versus direct acoustic and electric guitars, and what mixing approach might be most appropriate for your music. optimize your listening setup into a more critical listening environment. "
  20. There is no such thing as critical listening course. But there are audio course available, from cert to dip level. Mine was a module in my multimedia studies doing studio work. The course teaches fundamental of sound, software & hardware methods of editing, recording & mastering, and monitoring. Mine was geared towards film production so it included sound effects/follies, mastering into dobly & ac3 channels and audio sematics (forgot the exact term lol.) Critical listening is a aquired taste.
  21. There're some RCA splitter plugs I saw at Avit. Seems to be the same design as the Vampires (was it) that you wanted, but not too sure of the source though as I didn't ask the saleman
  22. You don't have to worry how dismal they may sound if you are using it for classroom "studio monitoring". In class you WILL be monitoring through speakers. I went through mine with no specialise equipment. The er6i is a good choice already because most of the time you're damn familiar with your recordings anyway. Not much to monitor except during the recording & output process. As long as you know your materials inside out, you're good to go! On to cans now, why not head down stero and have a listen out of your iPod. You'll save the time second guessing/mis-interpreting the sonic signatures of the cans from forummer's inputs anyway. btw, where are you taking your classes
