if mx500 = mx400 + volume control [all else equal]

 

then no

 

mx500 cables that goes to each earphone are symmetrical

 

so it hangs down the front

 

note: mx series are not earplug type, i.e. external sounds will affect your listening

 

but mx400/500 are the cheapest headphones that audiophiles wouldn't mind being caught wearing

apparently there's a MX 400 RC, shorter length for use with remote control

MX500 has a very short cable, so you might want to consider that before getting.
