aaron-xp 0 Report post Posted June 27, 2006 (edited) Really a newbie in this LCD panel stuff, but family is thinking of getting a 32 to 37 inch one. Not really too sure of what should be taken note of: Resolution? Contrast? Whether the so called "hard-panel"is better? Mainly looking at the few mainstream brands such as LG, Samsung, Toshiba, Philips and Sony. Budget of about $0 to $2199, though I am almost certain that a 37" is impossible at this low budget. Rameish 0 Report post Posted June 27, 2006 Panasonic Plasma is supposed to be of good quality. The last I heard (about 5 months back) smaller screen versions are still made in Japan for what that's worth. Price wise it may be tight for a larger screen. aaron-xp 0 Report post Posted June 27, 2006 Problem is, that plasma screens have a big power comsupmtion compared with CRTs and LCDs. Panasonic LCDs? Heard that Philips is really popular in Europe, whereas LG, in Asia.
Mackie 0 Report post Posted June 28, 2006 (edited) All you need to know about LCD TVs can be found in the following link. It also highlights the pro and cons of LCD and plasma. I propose LCD in view of the size your parents are considering. Local HDTV broadcast is also one of the key reason. http://www.lcdtvbuyingguide.com/ http://plasma-vs-lcd.com/plasma-lcd-start.htm http://hometheater.about.com/od/lcdtvfaqs/f/lcdfaq2.htm Edited June 28, 2006 by Mackie

Mackie 0 Report post Posted June 29, 2006 Please heed this one advice. Don't be too bowled over by the sharpness, color saturation and resolution of LCDs cos they are usuall so. Concentrate and grill the salespersons on refresh rate. The higher the refresh rate the better. Request for a dvd with fast action scenes to test the LCDs eg F1, racing cars etc. A LCD with slower refresh rate will result in the screen contracting and then bulging when the fast moving target (car) moves towards and away from the center of the screen. Mackie 0 Report post Posted June 30, 2006 Any rate below 20ms is good, the lower it is, the more expensive it will be.
aaron-xp 0 Report post Posted June 30, 2006 That'll mean most LCD panels of today, right?
Mackie 0 Report post Posted July 4, 2006 (edited) Test it visually, specs is just a number on paper. U'll notice sets with faster response time cost more and reserved for the higher/flagship models. Edited July 4, 2006 by Mackie

Firefox 0 Report post Posted July 5, 2006 I was hoping for a more predictable answer Parents would prefer a more established brand. Amoi is the choice of most who are into Home Theatre and HDTV locally. Even in China, it's THE choice for those in the upper-class.
