Strange AKG K-501 Behaviour in Audition

Hi,

 

Tried to audition the K-501 in Asia Sound last Saturday, and the only set they have appear to sound "cracked" - something like the headphone is clipping. It also very thin. And I am not even playing it very loud. They used a Cyrus amp/cdp, and I was testing with Reference Recordings Exotic Dances from the Opera and other RR discs. I heard none of the virtues that people talked about.

 

Isolated case? Dud unit or?

I don't think so, loose connections shouldn't cause clipping-type distortion right? Anyway, the salesperson later demoed a 271 Studio for me which sounded fine. So I am wondering if that unit is a dud, or the amp is incapable of driving it properly. Hmm...

K501 has load of 120 ohm.. but I've heard they're somewhat quite hard to drive.Nevertheless it shouldn't pose much of a problem for an amp.

I've tried their 501 two months back with the Cyrus setup and they sounded OK to me.
