    Need help to build

I tried experimenting using the PC supply for a cheapo desktop multimedia speakers, the the noise (not hum) is unbearable.. Switch to external supply, and the problem is gone. YMMV.
  2. The Gilmore uses a toroidal transformer, which has very low hum/magnetic field. So shielding a toroidal is not neccessary. Shield it only if you want to maxed out. A lot of power amps do not shield their toriods.
  3. ablaze, I just listened Norah Jones' Come Away with me and do hear her voice cracked.. I think they upped the recroding level on this track just alittle too much..
  4. The Cruel War - Peter, Paul & Mary Seasons in the Sun - don't know who sang. Tell Laura I Love Her - Also don't know who sang. While my guitar gently weeps - Beatles (George Harrison) Crying - Roy Orbison (very haunting voice) Only the Lonely -Roy Orbison Gee, I must be an old man to list those songs.

I used to remember in my youngers days, there's the Tandy Radioshack computer.
  6. Good idea,, the instructons by adhoc should be FAQed too for easy reference.
  7. And it's not even scratched... Well done...
  8. As long as it sound good, then it's ok. Coz even in the expensive headamp that uses it, it sounded good to many ears. http://www.dself.dsl.pipex.com/ampins/webbop/4556.htm
  9. Yep, that's the opamp and a very cheapo one, but surprisingly used in some expensive headamps. A good candidate for upgrade. Resistors are also 5% carbon type..
  10. Looks like a DACT attenuator inside.
  11. Very simple to DIY the quietline... COst maybe less than $10... http://www.echoloft.com/cgi-bin/YaBB/YaBB....&num=1055271882
  12. Is that plug supposed to plug into the digital-out of your CD-player? If it is, then my guess is it's a 75ohms shorting plug.
  13. Yes, pics please. I just can't figure how to open the DT880 without serious damage.
  14. There're many generous designers who let people copied their design.. Besides Kelvin Gilmore, Nelson Pass is one of them. just look at all those Aleph clones being built with Nelson's blessing. Even Jan Meier's Corda HA-1 & Analoger are available at headwize to be copied freely. We are truely blessed.
  15. The Gilmore needs + & - 15V or so. You'll need to make a simple voltage splitter circuit if you want to use batteries. Nearest would be splitting a 24V battery (2X12V battery)into +&- 12V.

The best tutorial is the one at tangent. Actually I built my 1st cmoy base on the layout at Tangent's site. The layout is small enough to squeeze into those Hudson Jujubes mint box.
  17. Without understanding the circuit, it's difficult to say if changing the values of the cap would improve. To be safe, and ensure the circuit works as intended, stick to original values. Having higher voltage rating is ok if the size still fits the PCB.
  18. bang for buck , imho, would be Panasonic FC. I used them in my projects coz I needed more than 50 of them. I'll be broke if I use only the more expensive ones. But if you're changing just a few caps, maybe can afford to go for Cerafine or blackgate.. Or maybe you can try a few combi, like if it's along the signal path use more expensive caps like cerafine or blackgate and on power line then save abit and use panasonic FC. The usual disclaimer , YMMV.
  19. Just off hand name a few audiophile fav. elco caps, no guarantee they would sound the way you'd like, Elna Cerafine, Elna Silmic, Elna Stargate, Black Gates, many claim need a long time to break in. Nichicon muse, Nichicon Gold Tune, usually come in huge values so don't think it suitable Sanyo Oscon, Rubycon low impendance, forgot model. Of course the already mentioned Panasonic FC.
  20. Are you etching yourself? Or got good lobang to do it?
  21. Gilmore did actually test his power supply with oscillascopes (his 'workshop' is literally a lab.. LoL). I'm sure the Gilmore's PS is very good. But the cost might (using good caps) might outweight the cost of a simple SLA.
  22. Not quite true though. A good design like the Gilmore (and possibly modified) would be at least as good as batteries while not having dips in voltage output. Without actually building one and measure for ripples with a high speed oscillacope, there's no way to verified if Gilmour's supply is as good as a battery. A PS from the start already has quite a few disadvantages. Transformer hum, high EMI from AC lines, switching noise from diodes, even the best voltage regulators also has some percentage in regulation, and not really flat DC. All those filtering caps, opamps for tracking, snubber caps, bypass caps only serve to minimise the problem as much as possible, but not able to eliminate. In the end when you spend so much on these fixes here and there, the PS will be so much more expensive then a simple SLA setup.
  23. Yup, can't miss that shop. They have the charger and Yuasa brand of battery.
  24. Ajinomoto, the MSG manufacturer? I'm sure the cup-a-noodle style headphone is on a design table.
