  2. I am considering selling my portable rig to finance a speaker based system. Here are things I might be interested in selling JMT Portable (Maxed out) Meta42 (Sold) This is a great portable amp and an extremely good home amp with lots of bells and whistles. Here are some of the important features JMT maxed out configuration with AD8620 and stacked buffers, alps blue volume pot, blue led. 2 Output jacks (0 ohm, 60 ohm) : The extra 60 ohms jack converts the etymotic ER-4P to ER-4S. This jack might also sound better than 0 ohm with some other cans. Runs on 2 dual 9 volt batteries : Higher voltage makes it suitable as a home amp and for high impedence cans like HD-650 etc Modified Linkwitz crossfeed (off/medium/high) : I love this feature. Lots of recordings are almost unlistenable without crossfeed engaged (for example: Kill Bill soundtrack - Bang Bang) due to extreme channel separation. Note: crossfeed is not availabe on most meta42 amps. DC input jack : for home use, if you want to run it using a nice linear power supply. Price : S$290 Etymotic ER-4P (Sold) These are about 1 yr old but have been well cared for. These rarely been used in the past 6 months. I have 2 pair of original silicon tips Lots of foamies (bought extra foam tips from Hung Bros). Will have to check for exact no. All the filter provided in the etymotic kit are unused. Price : S$300 Outlaw Audio PCA cables 1.2 M One of the best bang for the buck RCA-RCA cables made. Build quality is top notch and so is the sound. Price : S$60 JMT Silver Mini-Mini cable: This cable has very good build quality. Terminated with switchcraft right angled jacks About 10 in long Price: S$40 Meier Audio Tech+Link RCA-Mini cables For connecting your home cd player to portable amps. The cable is approx 1m long. Nice cables for money. Price: S$40 Grado Comfy pads (SR60 pads) I have an unopened pair of these. These have not even been taken out of their plastic covering. Price: S$12 will try to add pics for some of the stuff cheers Rohit PICS NJB3 - Meta42 - JMT cable Tech + Link Cable (Meier Audio Link) Outlaw Cables (Outlaw Audio Link) Edit: Just to make myself clear. The amp has a DC input jack but does not come with an external power supply.
  3. 1) If you are not buying from a large company (where policies may be fixed) ask the seller to mark the item as "Gift". Personal gifts are not taxable. 2) Also if the seller is ready to do so you can ask him to declare the item to be of lesser price than actual. 3) Normal air mail shipping is less likely to attract customs duties.
  4. thanks to all again for the info. I am looking at setting up a speaker system in the coming months though havent done any auditioning yet.
  5. Thanks for the info guys. What are the advantages in going for separate pre and power stages over an integrated amp? cmk, from what I understand in the standard Melos SHA-1 the preamp and headamp section is same but in Gold and Maestro versions these sections are different. Thats what made me wonder whether a headphone amp can be effectively used as a pre-amp.
  6. As the topic says, what are the differences between a pre-amp and headphone amp? If I have a decent headphone amp (but no separate pre outs, only a headphone jack) can I use it as a pre-amp? Whats the difference between active and passive pre-amps? I am total newbie when it comes to speaker systems
  7. HP-1 - all genres Ety 4S - almost all genres I firmly believe that the job of headphones is to get out the way and reproduce music as faithfully as possible. If it makes one genre sound good but makes the other suck then its not doing it job right and adding its own coloration.
  8. My favourite portable setup (Total system price S$1300) NJB3 -> JMT Silver Mini - Mini -> Meta42 -> Ety 4S Pros : 1) This is the setup for those who would who travel a lot for extended period of time (staying in hotels etc). Having a jukebox allows you to carry all your music without the bulk of cds 2) Etys make this a nice setup for the frequent flyers. 3) Meta 42 add the extra bit of SQ for those who don't mind the bulk. 4) Good resolution, great isolation 5) Makes a nice bed system as you dont bother your partner with headphones that leak. Cons: 1) Too bulky for daily travel eg in MRTs, Buses 2) Not recommended for walking around. You dont want to get run over by a bus while taking a stroll. 3) Not recommended for situations where there lots of interruptions (frequent phone calls, colleagues wanting to discuss stuff etc). Etys not recommended for such situations. RS-1s though not my cup of tea might be just perfect here. Replacements: 1) The source is the weakest link here. Add something like a PDAC (haven't heard) and this system might rival some nice home system. 2) RA-1, XP-7, PPA, Super Mini (havent heard these amps) may make a good replacement for meta42. 3) Shure E5c, E3c ? thats all for now
  9. Welly, please do let us know your impressions on DV59-AVi. That is one of the players (other is Denon 5900) which I am interested in checking out. cmk, where can I buy the denon A-11 in SG? Any idea about the approximate market prices? You've got another component (melos SHA-1) which I would love to listen to
  10. Rameish, will check out the kimber cables when I'm ready to upgrade. Good point there Mackie. Edit: By the way yesterday I received my Tech+Link mini <-> RCA cables from Meier Audio to connect the Meta42 to the Pioneer player. So far they seem to be nice for the money but to early to make any judgements.
  11. Har28, you've got your head way too far up your A** I don't know how correct are the things said against you are but your reply in this thread makes me feel u deserve it
  12. LOL Blues Rameish, even at that price is a bit expensive for me. Anyways I'm still holding back from looking into cables and power section as I want to settle down on a good source first and then look into a cable with good synergy in my system. But after this experience I would certainly be more careful about cables I choose than before.
  13. Having never compared cables side by side I have always thought that the cable differences are usually negligible and won't show up unless one has a very highly resolving system. Yesterday evening out of curiosity I decided to compare the stock RCA cables that came with my pioneer universal player and my Outlaw PCA cables to see if i can hear any changes. Was I surprised The stock cable sounded muddier and less cohesive. There were notable improvements in bass slam/texture with the outlaw cables which also sounded more focused throughout the spectrum. The differences were so evident that it would be tough to atribute it to placebo effect. If memory serves me right the differenc was like the refinement when moving from Corda HA-1 to HA-2 (auditioned at Rameish's place). I'm sure that the improvements will be much higher with a kick ass source and higher grade cables That makes it one more place to plunk down the money
  14. Hi Rameish, have been a bit tied up with work lately. My MPX3 is still in sg. Want to give it a listen? Btw i was able to find some sacds in a shop called CD Ware house in Siam Square. Picked up Pink Floyd - DSOTM and Norah Jones - Come away with me. So nobody has listened to this player?
  15. Hi folks, I just picked up this player from a shop in Bangkok for about SGD 300 . Haven't got a chance to test the audio section of this player. I will be using this with the single power MPX3 headamp and HP1 headphones. Any body has an experience with this unit or has compared it to other players? I'm not expecting it to be a great sounding machine at this price point but would be nice to know if others have compared it to other players. Btw any one know where to buy DVD-A or SACD in bangkok? Rohit
  16. fishball, ygpm regarding the price. As N@Z mentioned JMT prefers to keep the price of his amps confidential so i guess the same would apply for the cables. cheers Rohit
  17. Scriberex, JMT at head-fi makes some good DIY mini-mini cables. You can contact him about it. Here is the silver mini-mini cable with switch craft plugs that he built for me. I have not tried other cables so cant compare it in terms of sonics. The build quality however is very good. cheers Rohit
  18. Sold! thanks for your interest
  19. had some problem with my net connection...sent PM now
  20. the amp has 2 selectable RCA inputs and can be used as a preamp also. pipee, ygpm regarding pics
  21. Looking to sell my Gilmore V1 amp. When I originally bought this amp it had some crackling noise and the PSU was 120V instead of 240V. This amp was returned to Antness for repair and a completely new 240V psu has been built for the amp. The crackling noise problem has also been fixed by Antness. So now its as good as brand new. Since getting the amp back I have not listened to it atall as its lying with my friend in singapore. I will let it go for USD 245 (cash or paypal, paypal charges on me). The buyer will have to personally collect the amp from Tampines. No bargains please as I have aleardy kept the price at 40% of what I paid for it. If you find any technical problem with the amp within 1 week you can return the amp and I will refund the money. For a comparison of how the V1 sounds and comparison to the V2 please check sacd lover's reviews on head-fi here. http://www4.head-fi.org/forums/showthread....ghlight=gilmore http://www4.head-fi.org/forums/showthread....ghlight=gilmore thanks Rohit
  22. I guess HP2 will be better because no phase switches means lesser chance of your cans malfunctioning But if the phase switches have been made with the same quality as the other parts of HP1 then I wouldn't worry too much. It looks kinda cool too
  23. Looks like u guys had some fun Can somebody mail me the group pics?
  24. to some extent it will depend on your cd drive capabilities and also whether the cd has lots of scratches or not. Exact Audio Copy (EAC) is a very good cd ripper and can give almost perfect rips.
