Call it a failure though. It really muffles the top and botton ends... It must be because the comply tip itself has a smaller "sound hole" which fits the UM1's nozzle, but blocks out the sides of the bigger driver nozzle of the EP630. Will attempt more modding some time later, perhaps after my tests...

Some people even suggest going straight away to the flagship product of the company, saving money Though, I admit it's a long wait (to saave enough), and sometimes, we just don't want the top (though most of us will want it in time to come). It really depends on yourself at this point. An upgrade will definitely be a "wow" experience for you, but really really matters is how long the "wow" can sustain before you get curious of how higher end models sound and audition them. That'll make you find that your current rig is unacceptable, leading to more spending. This will most likely happen, unless you have strong self-discipline... (which is not the strongest character trait of people seeking headphones... )

Not too sure... How about a PX100 (if you can get a good deal), should be close to your budget. As for earphones/canalphones, I would recommend the EP630. For clip-ons, the KSC75 (I think this would be the best deal of the three)

The FC7 can definitely be driven (in my opinion). I have used the HQ-1300 (the close relative of the FC7) and found it alright with the Zen Micro at fairly low volumes, ie 7-9/25. The FC7 comes with pleather pads though (if I have not mistaken), whereas the HQ-1300s come with velour pads.

The EP630 is noted for being a decent canalphone for its price. I agree, but the isolation is rather poor when compared with conventional IEMs. Therefore, I have this: Using short westone complys (of which I have removed the inner stalks), I managed to get much better isolation (and a better seal). It is also now possible to put it on behind the ear, or the "Shure Style". Not too sure about how it changes the sound, but I have never listened to the EP630 critically (and never intend to).

Speaking of Phillips cans, I vaguely remember a HP1000 which is said to be in the SGD200 range and has generate lots of interest in headfi (though it isn't readily available there).

If there is ever going to be one, make it in the East. It'll be great if it is in Kembagan Shopping Centre. Visits there will never be the same again....

Lo-Fi? I'm at that stage now, with only an EP630 + HQ1700 (FC7). Though I do hope that can change soon.

There is always a huge risk of over-spending (or underestimating the things you want/"need"). Just enjoy whatever you have though, uncle.

^ Wasn't there an article on this in Digital Life some time back? There was some advice on which songs NOT to pick, which was mostly those which are offensive or plain stupid.

I believe putting it on from the back reduces microphonics. The wire also doesn't become as "obstructive" that way.

I used to be guilty of that as well... You must admit though, that they are a marketing marvel, in my opinion, on par with Apple.
