  1. Alright everyone, here's the picture of the mod. The left photo shows the mod with kitchen sealant. Looks like your kitchen sink seal? And like your kitchen sink, the seal is airtight and can be peeled off. The right photo shows the cans with the foam pad on. It basically looks like a normal PX100.
  2. For portable cans, I seriously do not recommend open cans. I mean, who wants to listen to the traffic and MRT announcements? For that reason, although portapros, ksc75s, px100s, sr60s are good cans, I seriously won't suggest them for portable use. That leaves the usual px200, k26p, and k81dj. I've owned all three. PX200: to me, it doesn't sound right. odd tonality. K26P: it's better, but too much bottom end and too little top end. Can get better results if paired with a source or amp that's the opposite or at least eq-able to the oppostie, i.e. less bottom end and more top end. K81DJ: better than the other two, but need longer burn-in and removing the inner foam pad. But still it has too much bottom end. I now pair it with a brighter source (iaudio x5) and a bright amp (LDM+). To me it sounds almost perfect now. Note that all three cans need an amp to sound reasonable. That will bring your budget above $100. Also, do consider your player, which needs to be brighter or eq-able to go well with these cans. If can't stretch the budget, you can try those philips cans. I don't have experience with philips cans, so can't advise on them.
  3. I'd gladly like to post pics of my mod, but I realised that I must upload my pics to some site on the Net first and put a weblink to that site. Can anyone recommend a good free website for uploading the pics?
  4. Bluetac? That's a good one. I guess I went for a more permanent solution because the seal is supposed to be airtight. If you're worried that you may not like the mod, it can be reversed.
  5. Selling few months old PX100 for $55. Includes the plastic case. Black colour. Details of mod: It is a simple mod. Mine is the newer version of PX100, not the original version. The current version all sound too bright with little bottom end, unlike the orignial version. I followed a Head-fi documented mod to address this by improving the seal in the housing. I did this with DIY kitchen sealant. To my ears, the PX100 is finally listenable after the mod. It is much improved. The mod is entirely reversible (if you choose to) by just stripping off the sealant!
  6. There are a lot of genres in J-Pop, just like ang moh pop. I'm more into R&B and Pop stuff, not Rock. Misia: big name in J-Pop. Incredible voice, one of the best I've heard in my life (I'm not a teenager/NS boy/tertiary student btw). Songs are well-written, good arrangements, top grade musicians. Mika Nakashima: another big name. She's prettier, but can't sing in my opinion. BUT all her songs are terrifically well-written, and again played by top musicians SMAP: boy band yes, can't sing great. But very good songs, and played by top name American musicians. Hikaru Utada: not bad ...
  7. PA2V2 SOLD. Thank you for looking.
  8. You see, I'm not a technical electronics person. I do not know how much those caps cost altogether. But I see the price as paying for the materials AND the years of experience and knowledge of Pinkfloyd. That guy has been modding X-Cans from v1 to v3 for many years. He's really into X-Can modding. I think GBP55 is fair to pay for materials plus his years of cumulative experience and knowledge on this one specific piece of gear. Pinkfloyd and his mod are very reputable in Headfi. On other hand, if you feel that I'm foolish to pay so much, please please do profit from my foolishness by offering your much valued services. :-) Jokes aside, can one of you kind souls please HELP me?
  9. Hi everyone, I intend to upgrade my X-Can v3 with the Pinkfloyd mod package. The problem is my soldering skills are crap. May I kindly request if one of you kind angels can help me with the modding works? Info for the mod can be found at here. The mod basically is a cap change, involving 27 caps. All the selected caps will be provided, along with detailed instruction manual and even solder. I understand it's a straightforward mod but you will need to follow the instructions closely, because the new caps are a very tight fit on the board and so need to be soldered on in a certain sequential order. That's it. It will probably take a few hours of your time at most. As mentioned, I will pay for your services. Any takers? Please PM me. PLEASE HELP ME! THANK YOU VERY MUCH!
  10. Selling my PA2V2. 1 plus year old, refurbished by Gary (i.e. the maker) a few months back. Cosmetic condition: 95% Functional condiiton: 101% Price: SOLD
  11. I made my pligrimage to pay my respects to the king yesterday. Here are my brief comments: SOUNDSTAGE I'm the sort of person who prefer accurate soundstage instead of wide soundstage. In other words, I prefer, for example, a sound that supposed to be in the centre (eg singer, lead instrument) to sound dead centre, needle-sharp precision, just like in real life. Most headphones with wide soundstage sacrifice on soundstaging precision, in other words the centre sound (eg singer) is smeared across the centre rather than being dead centre. The Orpheus is the first system (I think of it as a system, not a headphone) that I've come across that can do both. I'm sure all of you can attest that the soundstage is beautifully and musically wide, but not too wide. And yet, the soundstage and stereo positioning is precise. The singer is dead centre, the words seemingly to come from a needle point directly in front of me. I can feel that instruments off to the side has a defined space, a great sense of recreating the physical presence of the performers. FREQUENCY RESPONSE Electro-static headphones aren't that great with the bottom end, so I wasn't expecting much bass end. To my surprise, the bass end of the Orpheus is sufficiently full, compared to say K1000s and Staxs. This is partly due to the circumaural design. Of course, we don't expect the bass end to match than dynamic headphones. For example, on the bass resonance test track of the Chesky Ultimate Demo disk, there is not much bass resonance to speak of. But for most other tracks, it is sufficient. Not great, but sufficient. As for the mids and highs, it's definitely perfection. Everything sounds natural, i.e. the mids are accurate. The lower highs are not harsh, and the upper highs have this terrific extension without sounding too bright or sibliant. Like I said, it's perfection! DYNAMIC RESPONSE I prefer accurate dynamic response rather than sacrifice that for sounding punchy. On a scale of 1 to 10, I prefer very soft sounds to be 1, very loud sounds to be 10, with the full range in between. Some headphones are capable of only 6 to 10, sounding punchy but compressed. Does it sound like I'm from the Senn/Beyer camp? For dynamic response, I'm glad to report that to my ears, the Orpheus is the most dynamic headphone system I've heard. It's amost like high-end studio monitors. The music is dynamic and expressive, emotionally pleasing. Soft strings are sweet, loud drums are powerful and never breaking up. Beautiful. TEXTURE This is the most pleasant surprise for me. The sounds from the Orpheus have this incredible sense of texture. It's almost like you can feel the sounds. Every strum, every pluck, every note, every snare stroke seems to emanate from the headphone and reaches toward you. I can physically feel the sounds! TRANSPARENCY All of you probably agree to this. The Orpheus is very transparent, very much naked. The music just comes forth, no veil, no harshness. CONCLUSION I have finally heard for myself why Orpheus is considered the king of headphones. Everything that we want, it does it perfectly. It is the ultimate marriage of electro-static technology and tube amplification. Perfecto. I will say it too, ALL HAIL THE KING! LONG LIVE THE KING! Actually, it'd be better if it's "LONG LIVE THE KING IN MY BEDROOM" COMPARISON Prior to this, I thought my home setup was already close to perfection. I use a HD650 with Zu Mobius cable (to remove the "veil"), plugged into an X-CAN v3 with a Mullard tube (for the warmth and plush bottom end) and an EH tube (to counteract the lows of the HD650). So I went home to try to recreate the Orpheus experience. No matter what I did, it is far from the Orpheus. Suddenly every sounds muddy. Suddenly there's no transparency. Suddenly the notes lost their texture. Suddenly the stereo positioning is smeared. Alas! My system is now flawed! Trying with the Beyer 880 yields better results, but it's just not the same My life is changed. I have heard the king. And there only one king. CDs USED Chesky Records "The Ultimate Demonstration Disk" Jennifer Wearners "The Hunter" Rage Against The Machine "Rage Against The Machine" Karajan+Berliner Philharmonic 1980s Beethoven Symphony No. 9 Jaco Pastorius Big Band "Word of Mouth Revisited" Ana Caram "Rio After Dark"
  12. MBD said check back in end-Oct or Nov. Even then they sounded tentative, like they're not sure if they're really placing an order for iGrados.
  13. In my experience, Hi-MD compressed quality is worse than mp3, even with the latest ATRAC versions. Plus the cost of buying MD media, the hassle of changing disks, the trouble of transferring to computer if you wanna archive your recrodings ... might as well use a HDD or flash based solution. I have good experience with iriver H120 and iaudio x5 for recording. Do get one of those stereo external mics (eg Sony) for much better quality.
  14. Usually no drivers are needed for USB DACs. Most are happy to work with Windows' native USB audio driver. I'm not sure about Macs though. Mac users?
