  5. Stereophile rated the marantz 8001 (which is said to be the same as the 7001ki) class A and the Rega class B, but did not state whether its due to the sacd playback capability of the marantz unit. And i dont think i can get a truthful audition for the marantz player, just reading reviews here and there. I did have an experience with a marantz 63mk2ki cdp very long ago and found it utterly disgusting with it's bloated bass, colored midrange. Its just sounded like one big pool of mud. One of the reviews for the marantz 7000ki stated when run cold, it sounds like the 63mk2ki. im not at all interested in sacds, just for redbook playback, any cdps to recommend in the similar price range as the marantz and the rega apollo? Other than these 2, im also looking at the cec51xr, but that seems like an overly polite player from what ive read. Anyone has any experience with the above mentioned units?

  7. The newer low end b&w speakers are not good imo, kinda bright and thin sounding. why not try magneplanar 1.6? i really like its sound, dont know if ur pioneer can push it well or not. The b&w 805s are pretty good too, albeit more on the analytical side. But you got to up your budget. Contact b&w dealer, i think they'll allow home audition.
  8. treat the room first using your current speakers. Room acoustics is very very very very important. A good sounding setup will still sound like crap in a badly treated room. How does the pioneer a6 compare to the pioneer a400? They say the a400 was used as a reference while designing this. It looks very good though.
  9. "Here are more info to stir up the hornet's nest.... whistling.gif" Anyone who monitors this thread knows which particular hornet hes referring to. Since he wanted a reaction, I gave him one. And I dont think its in anyway an attack saying his hearing is deteriorating since its the truth. As we grow older, our hearing can only go downslope. As for the part assuming he doesn't have a decent setup, THAT, can be a personal attack, based on how you perceive. But then again, I stand firm on this assumption though, who would be rambling about a budget in ear if he has an decent hifi/head fi setup, think about it. It also makes it all so amusing that he gave his questionably inspirational views on burn in and sound on the whole, all backed up by his possession of the budget in ear. At least if he said hes using a 15ohms rogers ls35a or an etys er4s, i wont find it all so amusing.
  10. 30years of professional listening, im guessing your nearing 50 plus 60? and you're recommending a 31.90 in ear? you dont have much of a decent system i presume? your words are oh so pathetically amusing. And that fella who wrote that amusing article, hes 80years old. Even at 50 his ears should have already started to deteriorate/fail, just like yours, chy. Not trying to be mean, but i dont think you can deny that.
  11. I havent been in touch with headphones and head-fi for a long time, but from what i remember its about 350-400 brand new, back then. You need good amplification though.
  12. Heres a quote. Remember, information is not knowledge; knowledge is not wisdom; wisdom is not truth; truth is not beauty; beauty is not love; love is not music; music is the best. -Frank Zappa
  13. sghound, i'd love to have you rebut my shoot down in a more intelligent way, of whatever the thread starter believed in, given that i see you commented "bravo on a well written piece". You on the other hand, got to stop whatever you're smoking, going downslope on the iq scale. Erm, stereo, "Since you agree to the fact that music and sound is subjective, then there is no right or wrong." I dont know how well you read into words, but, it was pretty clear to me that the threadstarter voiced out his comments strong and clear, with utmost confidence that he was right and everything that he didnt believe in was wrong. Clearly he wants everyone else to be on his boat. "Papaya86...thank you for your opinion. I must apologise for my ignorance. I have only been a sound engineer for the last 30 years. Design recording studios, TV and radio stations for last 10 years. Taught audio engineering with an international college for 5 years and write for an international broadcast magazine for 2 years plus training major broadcasters in South East Asia on their equipment and recording environment. My humblest apologies for writing something that I have no knowledge of. And I will remain quiet from now on" Given this paragraph, one can come to a conclusion on his personality. And also, given my tone and my choice of words, its pretty obvious im aggressive and do not take it lightly when someone shoves his views straight up my ass, moreover one that i feel is utterly wrong. (anything up any ass is wrong, seriously.) He has ONLY been a sound engineer for THIRTY years, to ear train for 30 years and finally come up with those views on sound, on my side, i feel sad for him. But hey, thats his pair of ears. "I personally don't think you can say that the mod $31.90 earphone don't sound good since you haven't even heard it with your ears. Unless you're like the some who believes expensive means good, therefore only mentioning your friend's "$400,00.00" system (which isn't as important as stating what stuff he was using, which I believe is a better way to let us gauge the system's quality.)" Since when did i say the 31.90 earphones sounded good/bad? And did i mention about me ever hearing those phones? How do you know whether i have heard the phones before? You seem to read into something that is non existent. It was just a wake up call to him to open his ears and open his mind and given the coincidence that i do have a friend with a system with a a price tag that falls under the same category. Its pretty obvious how sour he is to the somewhat fair/unfair circumstances in which each individual is entitled to materialistic possession. And mind you the 400,000 system sounds good, is in a well treated room and in the hands of an intelligent audiophile. Ive auditioned systems costing 10k and up and some sound like sh*t due to all sorts of reasons, mainly room acoustics though. And if it really does matter to you what he uses even with you not knowing how well the rooms treated, how the speaker are positioned, how clean the current is and how the system interacts with the room - the main components are Jadis Ja800 for power, Jp 800 for pre, Jadis J1 transport, Genesis 1 loudspeakers and as for the dac, i cant seem to remember what it is.
  14. apologies, was referring to the dugood cd player, for the dvd player, i never actually heard it before, thought you were referring to the cd player.
