Stereophile rated the marantz 8001 (which is said to be the same as the 7001ki) class A and the Rega class B, but did not state whether its due to the sacd playback capability of the marantz unit. And i dont think i can get a truthful audition for the marantz player, just reading reviews here and there. I did have an experience with a marantz 63mk2ki cdp very long ago and found it utterly disgusting with it's bloated bass, colored midrange. Its just sounded like one big pool of mud. One of the reviews for the marantz 7000ki stated when run cold, it sounds like the 63mk2ki. im not at all interested in sacds, just for redbook playback, any cdps to recommend in the similar price range as the marantz and the rega apollo? Other than these 2, im also looking at the cec51xr, but that seems like an overly polite player from what ive read. Anyone has any experience with the above mentioned units?

The newer low end b&w speakers are not good imo, kinda bright and thin sounding. why not try magneplanar 1.6? i really like its sound, dont know if ur pioneer can push it well or not. The b&w 805s are pretty good too, albeit more on the analytical side. But you got to up your budget. Contact b&w dealer, i think they'll allow home audition.

treat the room first using your current speakers. Room acoustics is very very very very important. A good sounding setup will still sound like crap in a badly treated room. How does the pioneer a6 compare to the pioneer a400? They say the a400 was used as a reference while designing this. It looks very good though.

And I dont think its in anyway an attack saying his hearing is deteriorating since its the truth. As we grow older, our hearing can only go downslope. As for the part assuming he doesn't have a decent setup, THAT, can be a personal attack, based on how you perceive. But then again, I stand firm on this assumption though, who would be rambling about a budget in ear if he has an decent hifi/head fi setup, think about it. 30years of professional listening, im guessing your nearing 50 plus 60? and you're recommending a 31.90 in ear? you dont have much of a decent system i presume? your words are oh so pathetically amusing. And that fella who wrote that amusing article, hes 80years old. Even at 50 his ears should have already started to deteriorate/fail, just like yours, chy. I havent been in touch with headphones and head-fi for a long time, but from what i remember its about 350-400 brand new, back then. You need good amplification though.

And if it really does matter to you what he uses even with you not knowing how well the rooms treated, how the speaker are positioned, how clean the current is and how the system interacts with the room - the main components are Jadis Ja800 for power, Jp 800 for pre, Jadis J1 transport, Genesis 1 loudspeakers and as for the dac, i cant seem to remember what it is.

Seriously, go with the 2 lao jiaos advice. The beyer 150 is light years ahead of the sony in terms of accuracy. As for nsjongs advice on the grados, i would disagree as grados are pretty heavily colored. Hes using it for critical listening, so the grados are definately out. But i have to say the grados are terrific for rocking out.

You're forcing chunks of tasteless meat down people's throats. And no one other than yourself knows how good your ears really are, but one thing i can say, you're pretty nuts forcing your belief down other peoples throats as if its nothing but the truth. Sound is a subjective thing, different people enjoy different kinds of sound, tones, textures etc etc etc. But me to you, in all honesty, get a decent pair of interconnects brand new, give it an initial listen, REMEMBER the tone, texture, grittiness if theres any and come back for another listen some 30-50hours later. You can try it out on tubes as well. The other is obviously the change in performance of that electronic component. That is what you perceive of "burn in period", not what most head-fi or hifi guys would agree with. There are so many world renowned mastering engineers out there but none of them deny the fact that break-in will change the performance of an electronic component. So why should people trust YOUR ears when they can trust one thats leading the way in the recording industry? A wise listener would know the music hes listening to and the environment in which the music was recorded, be it a studio, or in a hall like the carnegie hall. All this will only happen if the recording of the event was done well and that the mastering engineer didnn't screw up the job by leaving his name everywhere in the recording via the eq knobs. It is then up to your pair of ears to come to a verdict whether the recording is being honest to the actual sound of the event. And audiophiles dont adore the word "flat", its "neutral" or "transparent". And thats pretty much a correct way IF you want your music to be presented to you its original, honest form. The fact that we can hear differences between phones is that theres a significant difference in tone, texture,color, characteristics etc. Flat is just a term to describe music thats is dead boring with no extended highs or lows, just like a lousy transistor radio. but imo it can kill integrated amps in the 500 dollar range. but its definately no giant killer as reviewed that can slay amps in the thousands or even ten thousand range. thats just their attempt to hype things up i guess.

its quite neutral (a little on the flat side, the sound isnt coloured) , bass performance not astounding, its there but the punch isnt really up to my expectations. but hell, this thing is only 50bucks and it kills my rotel integreated amp and some other vintage amps that i heard of.
