  1. Anybody uses Chesky Test discs? Are they worth spending money on or just marketing gimmicks?
  2. Don't remember the model number but I was using the Creek at Hung Bros. The $700+ one.
  3. I also had an audition at Hung Bros over the weekend, comparing the 600 and 650. To my untrained ears, the only difference I could detect was that the highs on the 650 sounded smoother while that on the 600 was harsh.
  4. Ever since I came to this board, I've been exposed to a lot of audiophile jargon like brightness, soundstage, airiness, detail, bass attack, etc. Even with a glossary, it's hard to imagine what these terms mean without actually listening to an example. For me, the only term that I feel comfortable with is detail and clarity. To me, these two terms are like the opposite of sounding "muffled". For a newbie like myself, that's easy to detect. I can also detect grainy/raw sounding music vs smooth sounding music. Harsh treble hurts my ears, and I dislike overly strong bass. But the others like height and depth of soundstage, attack, forward sounding, laid-back sounding , etc are way over my head. Recently I've also auditioned various players, interconnects and amps and headphones. e.g. dvdp vs cdp, optical vs analog out, DT931 vs Senn HD25-sp. Difference btw 931 and the senns was like night and day, but the difference between sources, interconnects and amps was very very subtle. I could only tell if I did an A/B comparison immediately. If you ask me which one I liked better I also wouldn't know. If I listened blind I don't think I could tell you whether I was using optical or analog, or dvdp or cdp. For the experienced guys, how did you pick up these listening skills? Was it self-taught? Is it an in-born talent?
  5. Which CDs do you use for auditions when you buy equipment? Are there particular tracks where you can test certain aspects of music, such as soundstaging, warmth, etc.?
  6. Are you selling them separately? Your post wasn't clear...
  7. Anyone here familiar with this CD player? Worth buying it secondhand?
  8. Unfortunately they don't have any sets there to audition now so I'm a bit wary of reserving before I even have a chance to hear the Cayin. Nevermind, I'll try to go down as soon as the units are in. Thanks for the heads up Rameish!
  9. Support local singers! This lady has a velvet smooth voice, and her lyrics are very heartfelt and emotional. Bought the CD at ThatCD shop for $23. You can hear samples of her songs at this website http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/corrinnemay
  10. Hi Rameish, is there a need to reserve the units to get the intro price? Or just first come first served? What is the normal price do you know?
  11. I called them up today and they said to confirm again in 2 weeks time if the shipment has arrived or not. If arrived, I'll bring down the 931s and audition in their shop before deciding. Although I wonder if I'll still be eligible for that $600 introductory price in that case.
  12. Does Precision Audio have any units in their shops for audition? Very interested in the amp but want to test it with my 931s first leh.
  13. Happy birthday to you Mackie! I'm yet another inductee into the world of headphones by our dear Moderator with a pair of DT931s!
  14. As per my topic... Offhand I can only think of Gramaphone and Cash Convertors.
  15. Mine is from Gunslinger Girls, an anime. Mackie, I always thought your avatar was Faye Wong???
  16. Paradigm PDR-10 The buyer said that the rattling sound was only heard when the sub was turned on by itself, without any other speakers. Since I never do that during typical usage, never heard it before.
  17. He's bringing it back to my house and we'll troubleshoot it tonight. If I hear the rattling sound, then I'll take it back. Can't in good conscience sell off a defective product. Hope he is true to his word that he will accept the sub back if there are no rattling sounds at my place. It's also partly my fault , never make clear that sales are final and no returns. The buyer is a young engineering undergrad and appeared to be an earnest guy, so I'll give him the benefit of the doubt.
  18. I sold off my subwoofer yesterday to a guy from xtremeplace, he tested and auditioned it at my house, was happy with it and bought it. Today he calls and wants a refund because he hears "rattling" sounds coming from it when testing at home. I've never heard any rattling sounds, and apparently neither did he during the audition. How can I accept the item back when anything could have happened to it from then to now? He could have dropped it or damaged it in some other way... What do you guys think? Should I refund the money?
  19. I really enjoy listening to music with female vocals, accompanied by acoustic instruments or a small band. Usually the tempo is slow, or sometimes swinging. Eg. Diana Krall, Eva Cassidy, Corrine May, Laura Fygi. Any more to recommend?
  20. Thanks mackie. What if using a 250ohm and a 300ohm? Also, with all the good money spent on neutrik plugs, would it be a waste just to use a generic adapter to connect 2 cans?
  21. My wife and I want to watch movie together at night, so thinking of getting another set of headphones for her. Can a head amp (say the Cayin) drive 2 sets of cans?
  22. Quite intimidated by the shops in Adelphi and Sim Lim, especially when one's budget isn't high ($400 or less). Any friendly shops to recommend if I wanted to buy a cd player? Can allow auditions with my cans and personal CDs?
  23. PM me the price if you are interested to sell. thanks!
  24. I've came across this item several times in this forum and in headfi. Ppl report that it tames the high treble for bright sounding cans and it's not expensive. Just wondering, how does one connect this item to the audio system? Is it idiot-proof like connecting RCA cables, or does it require DIY work like soldering? Also, is it possible to get such an item locally?
