Soundstage, headstage and imaging

Recommended Posts

Imaging has an inverse relationship with soundstaging. In a speakers setup, toeing the speakers will give sharper imaging but narrower soundstaging. Having the speakers firing at 90 deg will widen soundstaging but imaging will be less sharp. Soundstaging also stretches in several dimensions ie, height, depth and width.

In a cans setup, I think the quality of these sonic areas are very dependant on the recorded material. Studio recorded tracks will have sharper imagining than live recording which should give wider soundstaging.

After running in my DT880 for 150 hours or so, I discovered it is capable of projecting a really wide and deep soundstaging on tracks from the cd "Karrin Allyson - Ballads"....more so than my ex HD600 (pls don't flame me as view may be biased wub.gif ). However, height projection is not as obvious than via speakers.

There are a couple of tweaks like coins, Shun Mook chess and wooden cones to improve sounstaging and/or imaging when these are placed atop speakers. I wonder if such devices will work with cans. Has anyone tried?

I wonder how one balance a coin or cones on a headphone while listening? happy.gif It'll hardly influence the sound since headphones are pretty close to your ears, unless you put the coins into the headphones and rattle all the way to the fourth dimension.

I was thinking of those shoon mook, mpingo 'devices' as well for headphone application. A high end dealer here swears by these things. Frankly I can't tell a difference.

No harm to try, if you don't hear any difference don't buy it. I saw it placed everywhere & I do mean everywhere. On the equipment (speakers, amps, source even where the speaker terminals meet the cables! Dedicated stands are even available for these discs! blink.gif

I was thinking of using double-side tape to stick the tweaks on the outside of the cans. Any material in close proximity to a vibrating source will resonate. Depending on the resonating frequency, a cancellation of which can up the ante of the drivers in this case.

The same principle is applied to audio systems when such devices are positioned atop gears where the transformers are and mechanical feedback is prevalent. Same goes for placement on speakers.

Mackie where in Singapore can purchase the Shun Mook chess and wooden cones? huh.gif

I don't know about Shun Mook...think they are not available in S'pore anymore. Joe Lee of 1388.com used to be the agent. As for the cones, a set of 3 costs $40 at Audio Industries, Adelphi. Look for Henry.

Before anyone rushes to buy some, I agree with some members if one doesn't hear the difference, no point embarking on this journey. I shall try if it works for cans and will feedback to U chaps later.
