Info for head-fi newbies

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I'm a newbie in head-fi stuff but i'm very interested to know more about it( i would love to toy with

it once ample information is collected). Can anyone suggest to me on the system that i should get -

cd player? amp? and even the headphone itself. What are the things that need to be considered?

and most of all I'll love to hear about your setup and configuration and please comment on the

pros and cons of your setup as well.

Little help from everybody, does anybody know how much is Grado RA-1 headphone amp costs

in Sg and where to get it?

ciao tutti

Hello to you and welcome to SGHeadphones. It's actually pretty taxing to answer to your qns. Soooooo much infos and stuffs to list and point out. I really suggest you check out Head-Fi forums. They'll give you all you'll ever need. Sometimes I can go on for hours just reading on one topic. happy.gif Or you can ask specifically and we can answer better than to an open ended qns. =]

Hi all,

seems like not many are responding to my call. Actually, i just want to

hear some of your experience. I hope more can contribute to this

especially on their current setup and systems. Of course, please tell the

bright and dark side of your system. I wish to hear more about

different setups to find the best match for myself.

Thanks.

Hi, not all of us know how to write about our gear. I am using a Pimeta with DT880 and am happy with the setup. But I wouldn't know how to describe the sound quality etc. wink.gif

Actually it will be very hard to recommend you anything if you do not have a point of reference.

Let's just say the beyerdynamic DT880. Some might say they are bright, some may say they are dark. I've experienced both before depending on pads, equipment and length of burn-in etc. For sennheiser hd650, it can be described as heavenly or muddy. So until you've tried something and have a reference, it would be difficult to guide you along as everyone's ears are different. Preference for type of sound plays a major part here.

I'll advice that you get a headphone with the sound you like first before embarking on amp, source and IC. Anything Audio(entire beyerdynamic range) and maybe Hung Brothers will allow you to test try headphones.

I like Anything Audio, they have great service, the salesperson (owner?) seems genuinely interested in headphones rather than just selling them. thumbup1.gif

I just bought something off them... laugh.gif

I second that! Anything is located at Parklane Shooping Mall along Selegie Road, not the one at Penang Road. That be-spectacled stuff seems more interested to know what I have (hardwares) than selling me-definitely not typical SL Sq people. So I bought a pair of ear-pad for my DT 150 tongue.gif to "reward" him.

Hi all,

thanks for the response you all have poured in . I think I will have a try

with Grado cans. So far I only heard about the good side of Grado. What

i want to know more is actually its drawback(so that i know if i can live

with it). Before i place my bet on Grado, i hope some of you might want to

give me some advice. ...maybe to stop me from getting it..

Actually, i'm looking for a headphone that can reproduce sound close

or better than a pair of B&W 800 series speakers in a perfect room. My

humble marantz int amp and tannoy bookshelf speakers just dont do the

work in my room(obviously I cant compare an apple with an orange but that's

the best i can get with the cash in my pocket in the past).

Fidelity in the sound reproduced is the thing that i'm looking for, the clearer

it is the more i like it. For the bass, as long as it is in acceptable range

than it will not bother me much. Thanks

I don't think it is possible to reproduce the sonic qualities of a good hifi setup with phones. They sound different, especially the staging. I listen to mostly jazz and classical and find the DT880 with a good amp, just simply "there". I also have a Grado SR60 but use that mostly for pop and rock music. Like the others say, it is taste and as the proverb goes, "one man's meat is another man's poison". So, the modern YMMV!
