Absolute0 0 Report post Posted September 12, 2007 There are the Beyer DT990/880, which are apparently excellent bang-for-buck mid-range cans that should do well in most systems. The AKG701 and HD650 are contenders as well, but like the others mentioned, quite difficult to drive, and rather pricey.

loop_ 0 Report post Posted September 14, 2007 please seriously consider the HD600. It's the best pair of headphones imo and not at all difficult to drive. Most standard equipment with a headphone out will drive it loud enough. In terms of audio quality, obviously an amp will make it sound much better. but don't be fooled by the low impedance = easier to sound nice talk, which isn't necessarily true; the hd600 will sound much better with most amps than a low impedance headphone due to the high current requirements of low z headphones, and that likely includes the internal amps in your TV, cdp, etc etc
sghound 0 Report post Posted September 14, 2007 please seriously consider the HD600. It's the best pair of headphones imo and not at all difficult to drive. Most standard equipment with a headphone out will drive it loud enough. good suggestion. the HD600 is probably one of the best all round cans. the K701 does classical & jazz much better but not as good as the HD600 when it comes to pop, rock, dance or hip-hop. plus the K701 is nasty to amp. the Denon D2000 is better at pop, rock, dance & hip-hop but can't really cut it for classical or jazz. and the D2K is even easier to amp than HD600. different cans for different genres so it's really down to music preferences. if u have a higher budget to go for more than 1 pair of cans, then i would suggest cans that specialise in your fave genres. but if u only want 1 pair of cans that can do the jack of all trades and master of some not all, the HD600 is the way to go. even better balanced than the HD650. the HD600 can be perfectly amped using the $150 Dugood EA-600 which is designed and voiced for the HD600. imp0ssibled 0 Report post Posted September 14, 2007 how bout hd650 compared to hd600?
sghound 0 Report post Posted September 15, 2007 how bout hd650 compared to hd600? both are great cans so it's matter of preference really. HD600 has slightly lighter bass and a more balanced sound, better at genres like jazz and classical then the HD650. but if u listen to stiff that need more oomph in the lower end, then the 650 should float your boat. LemonT 0 Report post Posted September 19, 2007 I upgraded from SR80 to SR225, then got a HD650 and a GS1000. I use different kinds of cans depending on mood and songs. If you are driving your cans without amps, Grados are the easiest to drive. SR225 is a step up from SR80, the difference is quite significant at least to my ears. Also you can nvr get bored with Grados, they are such fun cans.

PS: Don't know is Grado small plug with 1/4" adaptor causing intermitten problem. sometimes left no sound, or right sound. Better to keep two headphone. one with a small plug, one with a big plug. one easily driven, one with a difficult load.. erwin 0 Report post Posted September 22, 2007 Well, one thing for sure is both the Alessandro MS-2i or Grado SR325i will be heavier than the SR80 and comfort issue would still be there. Audio Technica's (A/AD/W series) is one of the most comfortable headphones I've come across. They have both open and closed and range in price from $79 - a few thousand. Dear Aron, I agree that the AT A/AD/W series is really comfortable and I already have a AD900 bought from Stereo, I am interested in getting a 2nd pair for dvd watching (my AD900 is for PC gaming), apart from the obvious upgrades along the AT line, are there any other brands that are equally comfortable. You let me try the Senheissers (too much 'head clamping' effect for my head) and the Grados (fit on my head felt a bit odd). How are other brands like AKG for comfort wise (do you have K701?) thanks
