  1. Late reply....yes, I'm aware and also tried recording cds from the pannie pcdp to a sharp md player/recorder via a mini toslink optical cable. The noise floor is significantly lower via optical than analogue connection through the same optical/line-out jack.

As what some of you have done (correctly), if any post or conduct of any forumer were to make you feel offended and/or uncomfortable, report the post to admin/moderators and we will investigate and take the necessary action. This course of action not only alerts us of potential problems but also shield the "plaintiff" from impending backlash if he/she were to publicly denounce the concerned person. In addition, the "defendant" will be cordially advised on how to blend in and correct his conduct via private correspondence. We hope that the concerned will capitalise on having an opportunity to mend his ways and avoid embarrassment if a public lashing were to be given by us, which is inappropriate and impolite. As we have found out in previous cases, it's usually a misunderstanding, plain and simple. Those that are truly antagonistic and looking for trouble will be banned from this forum without hesitation or they just simply fade away after being sent to Coventry.
  3. If you wish to avoid missing the mrt stops, especially when it's crowded and your view is blocked, set your mobile phone to receive broadcast (it's in the menu) and you'll be able to read each and every station the train reaches.
  4. Always nice to have fresh pairs of eyes and hands, welcome aboard!
  5. Yaawwwnnn.....something just woke me from my slumber.......
  6. I wish to reiterate it doesn't matter what sound/music that is required for burning in of audio equipment, just as long as the parts in concern get a workout, much akin to running in your pair of track shoes. As such, it's not the terrain that matters. However, if a freq sweep is at hand, use it but be careful with the volume (moderate please).
  7. Audiolab integrated amp (presumably 8000A?) disengages speakers output when the headphone socket is in use. This is very common. There's no hard and fast rule as it depends on how the amp was designed but more often than not, amps made in the 80s and 90s tend to operate in this manner. If your integrated amp or pre-amp does not have headphone socket, it's wiser to purchase a head amp and connect it to the pre-amp/integrated amp's [TAPE-OUT]. This will allow you to use your cans with the option to engage or disengage the speakers (volume control has no effect on TAPE-OUT signal). In addition, all the sources connected to the amp can be selected to be heard through your cans. The only detriment (if any) is the pre-amp/integrated amp must be powered so that signal from source can be transferred to the TAPE-OUT output.

When you are choosing a cdp, don't keep looking at DAC as it doesn't guarantee sound quality, just resolution. Even a cheap dvd such as Akira and the likes sport a 24bit/196KHz DAC and if you get my drift, you would continue with the search for a good sounding cdp; specs are secondary. The only pitfall with used and vintage cdps is condition and parts availability. If these concerns were rendered moot, you shall attain better value for the money spent. As a newbie, skip the trouble and go for a new cdp within your budget. For instance, CD5001 is an impressive machine for the price of $350 over CD5400 which the former supersedes. In the meantime, stay with SR60 and partner it with whatever cdp you're gonna buy and live with it till you are used to the sound. This will give you a solid foundation on what to expect and which sonic department to upgrade when auditioning for new amp or cans.
  9. You could pm SE and ask Aron since he's a member of this forum. You should get a discount since you're a member. Therefore, I don't think it's wise for him to publish the price since this forum is accessible to the public (non-members) as well.
  10. Oh I reckon he will, provided you thrown in a few dollars into his cash register?
  11. Believe me, they have been around for years now and despite the alarm raised in audiophile forums, their operation is still prevalent.

You are certainly heading in the right direction but please do not look for a neutral cdp at your budget, even high end cdps costing 5K and above may not be totally neutral. Henceforth, know the sound you prefer and head towards that direction. More often than not, newbies will love the Marantz sound. The CD5001 costs about $350 and I dare say it won't be a lemon. In addition, Marantz always have a pretty good sound quality out of its headphone circuitry, which is capable of handling low and high impedance cans really well, except for Senn HD600/650 but Beyers sounded fine to me. That said, you can live with your cans driven direct from this cdp until such time you are craving for an amp upgrade. By then, you would already have gotten used to the sound of your cdp+cans and facilitate better judgement when choosing an amp. For instance, if having an amps offers no improvement over the present system, you can either choose to omit the amp and save the money or choose another that offers a true sound quality improvement. Where to go for the cdp then? U've answered it yourself, KEC! Deal with confidence. Clarence and his bro are well known in the audiophile circle to be really honest and nice to deal with. Just make sure you drop by on weekdays as they will be overwhelmed by the home theater and hifi crowds. Auditions are welcomed. The Marantz CD63 series (CD63, CD63SE, CD63KI) were superseded by CD6000 series (CD6000, CD6000ose.....) and then (CD5400, CD7300), followed by the current CD5001. Feel the age yet? Last but not least, partner a cdp with a desktop amp, not a portable amp. For instance, a Master Original or better yet, XiangSheng 708B headamps will complete your setup and last you for a long time. Till the upgrade bug bites again, that is. LOL
  13. Yes, a soft pop is always prevalent ...but what I'm referring to is the crackling sound. Say for instance, while an old fluorscent tube + failing starter struggles to light up, crackling noise can be heard through the system during this short duration. As for dimmers, they do generate a lot of noise too. I plugged a floor standing lamp with dimmers to my power conditioner and heard a constant but low buzz through the sound system. However, the culprit could be the light bulb or dimmer or both. As yet, I find speakers system benefits more from a power conditioner than can systems. It has to do with power consumption which is much lower by the latter.
  14. A word of caution if you're specifically looking for Beyer. SE doesn't carry Beyer, only Jaben does.
  15. True but in the case of supraural/circumaural cans vs IEMs, the physics governing them cannot, as yet, be altered by technology. This same underlying factor applies to speakers vs cans. That's why an audiophile who owns a speakers system may also possess cans and IEMs. Even the decades old cd technology has yet to totally render LPs in the way of the dodo ie, obsolete and extinct.
  16. Taking a peek inside my pcdp now....ah.....its Kings of Convenience - Riot On An Empty Street.
  17. Let me give a fun analogy. Standing real close to a turbo jet engine (if you're not already sucked in) will blow your ear drums in the same way as hearing IEMs at insane spl. It's not the proximity of sound source to the ear drums but loudness that matters.
  18. Discontinued. But Porta Pro (perhaps Sporta Pro) use the same drivers in KSC35. IMHO, it's worthwhile to have both KSC35 and 75 albeit same signature but the former has better bass slam while the latter has greater treble extension.
  19. My pleasure. Hope it will help you to avoid the lemons.
  20. How bad is bad? I simply don't think it's that bad in S'pore ie, not unless you hear crackling sound through your sound system whenever the fluorscent light is turned on. This happens in old buildings but a power filter/conditioner will not totally rectify this problem.
  21. I highly recommend Beyer DT150. Believe me, this can has resolution which the 7506 can't beat. I could easily discern the sizes of concert halls with different classical recordings; just an indication of its prowess in the detail department. U could turn professional with it.
  22. It's not technology nor quality that matter most in a similarly priced/quality full size cans and IEM. It's the medium; airspace that both tranducers work with. As such, cans will present much better soundstaging but IEM betters in isolation. Other areas are open to contest. This is why they can co-exist.
  23. Btw, it's Jazz At The PawnSHOP......hehehe.....not PawnHOUSE.... There are 2 albums in this series.
  24. To me, canal phones and IEMs are the same but the latter is further distinguished for the role it plays as highlighted in Top-Gun's post above. If any of the comply or shure tips fit on a Sony EX71, the penetration similar to that of any IEM should be felt. I did a google search on canal phones. Look at the results it generates.
