You should use Optical miniplug. Also you need to play audio CD.

CDP is speacialize to play CD so no doubt if you buy a branded one. Sound will be better. Why you want to ask about CD-R and others???

There is 2 port. One for headphone out. 2nd is line-out and optical out. It is shared. Edit. Optical out will only work for CD audio. No MP3.

I find that initial start up the optical light will lit. After that would just dim and back to headphone mode. You need to play CD in order for it to work as written in the manual.
