  1. you cant use it as a headphone amp unless your headphone's in dual mono.. not a shared ground.. else you will face a humming issue
  2. wah.. siemens price go up already? the last time i got a pair was 65 each. sold them for 45 each later on after rolling. telefunkens.. they cost 200 a piece
  3. quite a couple of shops on the lower lvls 2nd and 3rd carry it. i've got 2 sets of them, but no rave from me
  4. try anything by jimmy scott.. one of the most emotional singers i've ever heard
  5. ZZzz company headed by singaporean... will singaporeans kena chop carrot head? why do americans and foreigners get better pricing than locals, despite the products only made next door in malaysia?
  6. how abt considering the headroom's amp?
  7. So you think paying much more for Shure or Ety is not being ripped off? Btw, can you comment on your review set? I'll like to know more about its quality before commenting on its price... I'm saying the conversion from 99USD to 219SGD is strange. It's understandable if an american company sells something more expensively in singapore due to shipping costs and what have you. But if a singaporean company sells its product in its own market at a higher price than an international market, wouldn't you find it strange? it is normal. even their gigaworks t20 speaker, its cheaper to get in the us then getting it locally. amazon has it for usd80, locally creative shop it goes for 180 there abouts.
  8. you want the whole island after you arh... ever tried those from LCK training area? ever picked up some on the way back after exercise and they were pretty nice tho rather smallish in size... but of course if your past ur garang age, can try those from geylang ba...nowdays whenever I take a bus home even arnd midnight the eating areas outside the fruit stalls are quite crowded... no problems with tekong the commander & camp commandant's a good friend of mine they even have fist sized cockles there, of which i dare not try as i do not take shellfish. local durians are typically thin fleshed but very rich in flavour. mandai training area's got tons of durians too. havent tried the lck ones b4
  9. its normal with tube amps. its a huge challenge actually, in eliminating hum. you could probably try to determine the frequency of the hum, i.e 50hz or 60hz. special care has to be taken in shielding the transformers, proper positioning of the signal path, position of the tubes, microphonics of the tubes, etc. its easy to build tube amps even via diy, but its difficult to obtain clean sound at high sensitivities.
  10. tekong durians not much flesh, but extremely flavoursome
  11. in the regions of seven fifty i think
  12. *update i just took the transformer out of the box, and re-wrapped it in 3m aluminium sheets and dumped it into a cardboard box :X kinda budget but tried to achieve maximal isolation i even used an interconnect cable and rca plugs as a power line when the IEC plug wasnt enough (3 connections max) and the difference is heaven and earth. its so much sonically superior right now that when i first tested the amp with a cheap pair of earphones.. the senns mx 400s.. i was hooked.. hearing imaging and details and the precision.
  13. OOOOH.. i was there today.. and he told me the headphone amp was on home loan to someone already tube amps goes best with high impedence headphones. high impedance needs high voltage low current, which tube gives.
  14. thanks just did up another pair of speakers 3/4" marine ply, 36" by 24" by 12" using goodmans axiom drivers and ohno occ as internal wiring as well
  15. well when i'm richer i might consider replacing the 2 midranges with a pair of accutons. probaby costs abt $900 bucks a pair the last time i check.. a little outta budget now

    DIY LS3/5A

From these : to : sticking in the bitumen damping.. first layer in progress. sides and back were all made double layered to be fully damped. the exact ls3/5 made in england binding posts.. $55/set cabinet from martin's carpenter. (BAH they didnt drill many of the holes and the binding post hole was the wrong size) completed after some hunting arnd for the correct screw size, crossover done up by digi01. internal wiring's teflon 20awg ohno occ copper wires in single runs. (from ahfart audio) crossover mounted to wooden board and 1 piece bitumen for damping, and stuck behind tweeter with 3M VHB tape. final product : running in the tweeters right now. they've been in the box since 4th Jan 1978, and its their first day singing. so far first impressions, sounds excellent, and far more detailed then i've expected it to be. very delicate sounding and totally out of the box. only draw back's cant drive it too hard because the midrange driver doesnt take power well and clips easily when over driven or when bass's too strong. well havent loaded it with my tube amp yet.. been going transistor. gonna try tomorrow and will be back
  17. LHS at SLT lvl 2 will be able to do that for you with a wide range of cables to choose from.
  18. HFO's hotel california is not a good test, the bass is exagerrated with the use of a microphone at the conga drum's bottom vent. tweaking with that results in the rest of your music's bass sounding a little wierd and less satisfying. i've given up on testing for perfection, because recordings differ as well, tweaking a system to sound good with some twangy musical instruments doesnt mean the vocals sound good as well. just have to ensure coherent speaker placements, no boomyness, good imaging etc and i generally do that with a few discs, vocals to orchestral, inclusive of the 1812 overture (not really test for positioning but how the system copes at reference levels)
  19. Just heard from him on msn today. Congratulations!
  20. qn: whats the state of completion for the MJ?
  21. wah i m itching to make liao lei. with pcb much easier. it uses the ECC82 rite? i've just gotten a pair of GE ecc83s wonder if the gain might be too high for it..
  22. no idea stumbled upon pple talking abt amps and headphones in lowyat http://forum.lowyat.net/index.php?showtopic=257371&
  23. very nice how much did yours cost you? i had one mj from him too but a more compact design. there's generally no hum unless you use a very high sensitivity earphone. but after my exams i m going to take the transformer out and re-house it.. to maximize isolation your amp would be rather perfect if you had requested the psu to be in a similar separate box i quite like the sound of this amp when coupled with a high impedance headphone. thats when the sound's very warm and magical. if you use a portable media player you can actually tweak the equalizer of the player to some higher bass setting.. and you get this very interesting "wet bass" that i had experienced. doesnt boom, it slams but sounds.. er. WET. very interesting. as a hifi person loss of bass control is terrible, but in this case control doesnt seem to be lost, just a decay difference.. i would describe juicy and fat sounding, especially when the double bass twangs on Forgiven/not forgotten blues by ray brown with low Z headphones, doesnt sound as good, and as you've described, slight tendency to distort. from my experience it sounds v good with a beyer, and with the type of highs it pushes for, would make the senn hd600/650s a good match as well after quitting headfi, this is the only amp that i've been keeping.. very uncommon sound and musical in its own way, took digi01 abt 3 days to finish it via point to point, something special, and i cant bear to sell it either
  24. anyone knows whats the total cost of making 1 soha? so far i've seen pple selling 1 soha amp for rm 500, not top notch parts either
