  1. Unfortunately I have to agree with Ablaze that Singaporeans can be a really sad lot of people. I'm a Singaporean and it shames me to say this. One other incident was the recent charity thing by Creative CEO, Mr Sim. I recall reading that he bought the remaining stock of the closing down 1.99 store and was selling to the public, at whatever price they wanted to pay. And he would match dollar for dollar and donate the money to charity. Then in came some lady who bought 20 items for 20 cents and some kid who bought 20 items, paid 20 cents and wanted change! Or some guy who went in there grabbed a case of stuff and insisted the whole case counted as one item! When I read that I was deeply saddened ... we have bad drivers, uncouth public ... and god knows what else ... the only thing I can conclude is that we're not a very matured society. And perhaps becuase of that, our government enforces strict rules and adopts the philosophy "big brother knows best"
  2. So does that mean that there's some kind of counter, that for any given period of 60 days of no posting, we'll be deleted? So say even though u had like a thousand posts prior, but u went on some super long vacation, without access to the internet (like you're stuck in the amazon forest or something ...), after 60 days, your account would be wiped out?
  3. I'm also interested in the X-can V2
  4. Actually, I believe that Alpha Audio is supposed to carry it, but last I checked, they no longer have any stock of it. The V2 is being phased out and awaiting the arrival of the V3
  5. Hey thanks for the tips Mackie Appreciate it! Shall wait and see which amp I'll eventually get. IN the meantime, I'm sure what I have will provide great listening pleasure.
  6. Haahaa, yes, look at how the prices have dropped ... so somehow after enquiring about the prices, I had this irresistable urge to just walk home with one. *shrug* what can I say ... I'm weak ... Yes, lucky Jason ... pity I was slow, else I would have offered to take it off your hands, Mackie
  7. Hey Mackie ... didn't really audition the CDP before purchasing it ... which is probably a big mistake ... but in this case maybe not ... I'm taking ur word for it plus after looking at all the cool features it has ... heh ... like I said ... spur of the moment buying. I bought it at SLS. MOst shops carry it. Variation in prices from 510 to 580 ... Still burning it in. But you're right about the headphone jack being able to drive the DT880. I'll probably live with that for the time being until I pick and get my dedicated headphone amp
  8. haahaa ... gotta go find that digital cam first! nah ... shan't bore u guys after Mackie posted so many nice pics already! And especially when all u've got to do is look at urs!
  9. All this talk about the Marantz CD7300 ... plus Mackie's great review on it ... I walked into SL today and walked out with $$$ less ... sigh ... another spur of the moment buy ... I've got to stop doing this ... of course, now there's a shiny new CD7300 sitting on my table
  10. From what I read of the report above, here's my interpretation of the system: I assume that in the wireless link, they are going to transmit the audio signal in a digital format. This would make most sense as if they sent the audio signal as an analog signal, it would be nothing more then a FM radio. The problem with sending a digital signal is that I assume, they are not using the digital output of the CD player. Which means they will be doing their own conversation of the analog audio signal (from the CD player) into their own digital signal. Here is 1st point where you will quite possibly encounter loss. Say our CDP has some high resolution fantastic D/A convertor, the analog signal will be converted into a digital format by their algorithms which is probably not as high resolution. So 1st point of degradation of audio signal. Then on the receiver part, they will convert the digitized audio signal into an analog signal. Again, I don't think their D/A convertors can compare to the kind of D/A converters present in an audiophile's equipment. So loss again. The next question is what kind of power amp are they using and what did they design. After all, you can't just have any kind of amp to drive speakers. What about power source? So these things will probably need to have wires to attach to some power outlet for power as well. So in my opinion, I don't think audiophiles will be scrambling to get these devices. As mackie said, probably used for lifestyle systems.
  11. Wow, great review Mackie ... I'll have to reread this again I'll now add this to my list of potential CDPs to get

    X-Cans V3

Ya I'm truly curious ... was thinking of getting an amp some time later this year ... since I never had a tube amp before, I thought this would be a good time to try it out. Although Mackie was telling me this might be a good time to try and pick up a cheap used V2!
  13. Nice! U just picked it up today? And u've already opened it up? Heh heh! So how does it compare to other CDPs? Any particular reason why u picked this one?

    X-Cans V3

Oh ya ... damm it ... maybe I'll just have to settle for an old V2 if someone is selling one ... Oh, by the way, the new V3 has a large volume control, if I remember the pic correctly.

    X-Cans V3

Heh heh ... well, it looks like its time for me to start setting aside some budget for it! maybe the exchange rate will drop by then? haahaa!

    X-Cans V3

Just tot I drop a note ... Was at SL today and popped by Alpha Audio, and asked the guy about the X-can V3. Told me that they should be in soon. Music Fidelity has already circulated pamphlets on it. It's no longer the sleek sexy looking round rube; it's now a rectangular block. The list price is 250 pounds! Just tot I let u guys know
  17. Hey Gryhon, out of curiousity, what kind of recordings are your going to do? Ya, I agree recording on the soundblaster ain't that great. What sound card are u going to use for recording?
  18. Here's a little something on my part to sort of suplement Adhoc's technical explanations. There's a reason why the sampling rate for CD's are 44.1 kHz. This is due to a signal processing theorem developed by someone called Shannon. Shannon's sampling theorem states that to avoid aliasing and allow for complete reconstruction of a continuous signal, the sampling frequency must be greater than twice the highest frequency component of the signal to be sampled. This sampling frequency which is 2*fmax is otherwise known as the Nyquist rate. I believe that this is a well known mathematically proven theorem. WHat I'm saying is that we can probably rest assured that the signal from the CD is completely reconstructed. Of course, this assuming that everything under 22.05kHz. If the recording equipment had picked up anything above that, that will not be reproduced by our audio equipment. As much as I am an advocate of the digital world, I have to admit that the real world is analog. However, the problem is in storing a exact replicate of the analog signal. Not only storing, but manufacturing and making copies of that, and distributing to the public masses. So on that note, I shall be contented with my CDs and DVDs ... and what engineers and mathematicians have given us music lovers today
  19. Adhoc, Sorry to hear that man ... but like what the others said, it'll take time and one day you'll find someone deserving of your feelings. Personally I had crashed and burned many many times over the years. And each time, painstakingly, slowly picking up the broken pieces and trying to get on with life. But as the cliche goes, life goes on. And truly it does. In the mean time, keep listening to music and take it easy.
  20. that thing costs $4k???!!! Well, I guess I could forgo the whole wireless bit. Was just commenting from a systems point of view earlier
  21. Ho ho! I've just received my cans from Mackie! Just like to say many thanks to Mackie who has taken many pains to arrange this!
  22. Hmmm ... I think it's quite a good idea that they are using the amp as the wireless receiver and the amp for the headphones. This way, if they can just get the digital signal out of the CD player, then you can transmit the original digital signal to the remote amp for decoding and D/A conversion. This would probably ensure that the original signal gets to the remote set. Then the quality depends on D/A converter and the amp itself. The problem with other wireless systems is that they take the analog signal out of the CD player, then do a A/D conversion before transmitting to the headphones. So the what's cramped into the headphones is the D/A converter, and then a tiny amp to drive the headphones. The whole chain would probably include lots of degradation due to the multiple conversions, and low quality conversions. So lots of loss right there.
