  1. got my first recording of beethoven's sixth symphony - Beethoven: Symphony no 1 & 6 / Szell, Cleveland Orchestra CD. first thoughts are that the orchestra sounds too clean for a beethoven piece. wish there was a stronger hint of reckless passion.
  2. for the moment sheryl crow's "always on your side"
  3. rachmaninov's 2nd piano concerto is breathtaking.
  4. hi there, i was wondering which orchestra's interpretation of the 6th symphony left the deepest impression on you so far. i'm a musician too. albeit a rather green one.
  5. she has one of the most honest voices i've heard so far.
  6. wow. thanks. very insightful. i'm quite partial to the berliner too! don't have an SACD player which is a bum. wonder if there are any portable cd players around that do the SACD format though .... hmm ... will take a listen at the different karajan recordings. what's your personal fave? are you a musician?
  7. heya am looking to get a recording of beethoven symphony no. 6. anyone has any recommendations? cheers
  8. Haven't listened closely to Judy Collins before, but does she belong to same era as Rosemary Clooney? Clooney has a wonderfully rich voice. If you don't mind the retro orchestration, I personally think Karen Carpenter has one of the most beautiful and timeless voices I've come across.
  9. i have an iaudio U3 and two MD recorders and use them to record from different sources. from my experiences, MD recordings give a more accurate reproduction and less static feedback, so i prefer these for live gigs. if you only want to record lectures, and the source is going to be quite far away from you, my view is that recording with an mp3 player will suffice but you may want to consider investing in an external mic. my MD player doesn't come with FM tuner (i believe there are some that do but they tend to have a more hefty build), but my iaudio does, default recording quality is average.
  10. thanks Mackie. am undaunted nonetheless if it is as good-looking in real life as it is in all the pics on the web. i'm current md player is also mind-numbingly slow with transfers but sounds pretty sweet after all these years.
  11. argh, you do bad things for my gadgetlust. the NH1 is not USB 2.0 right? even so, on account of its gorgeous-ness i don't mind. i am quite sad.
  12. hey mackie, what's your favourite duet track? i particularly love their take on "cheek to cheek".
  13. have a pair of EX71 too, and i'm paranoid about it being ripped apart every day. unfortunately can't afford any of the better phones yet so must take care of the ones i have.
  14. hi acidboy84 have PM you about your MZ-NH1. thanks. i'm quite a sucker for nice design, great battery life and great sound. those are probably the only things i truly desire in a music gadget.
  15. hi, happen to agree with Mackie on that point. i find myself turning to my md when listening to classical and jazz. albeit the cd player sounds as good, but mine pcdp is like 11 yrs old and is not portable at all so still rely on my md player. as for whether md sound reproduction is better, think to put that in context, i use my md recorder for my gigs and the quality of the live recording surpasses the recording on my U3 by miles. argh, someone has an MZ-NH1?! if you ever want to get rid of it ..... i happen to think it's ultra sexy ..... would love to adopt it from you.
  16. hi guys, thanks for the feedback. i do have an iAudio U3. it sounds great. but somehow the MD sound is fuller and warmer esp on vocal / instrumental numbers. anyone in this forum is an md user?
  17. hi just discovered that my old md player is starting to conk out ... any suggestions on a replacement? things i love about it which i would want the replacement to have: good battery life equally good sound quality am thinking of getting one of those hi-md devices to replace it but they don't seem very popular in s'pore so if anyone knows of a shop in s'pore, will be grateful if you could point me in the right direction. cheers
  18. amongst the female vocalists i have on recording, my personal favourite is astrud gilberto though. may be because i'm in love with stan getz and astrud sings with him on numerous occasions. but diana krall's earliest interpretation of "boulevard" is my all time favourite for one for that song.
  19. Have not had the chance to listen to that particular album. Will probably check it out after you've raved about the 2 killer tracks. Personally, when I heard her first rendition of "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" I was lost in it for months. Her new interpretation of it on this latest album is less poignant I feel. Do you think her earlier albums had more texture? Or is it we're accustomed to her style now so she has to try harder to surpass herself?
  20. heya just wondering if anyone has managed to listen to the lady's new album. cheers
  21. heavy could be coz i prefer over the head sort of phones. my head may be sturdier than my ears. "beefy" as in very deep bass ... but a boomy sort of bass that envelopes the music.
  22. tested out the creative 630 , sennheiser CX300 and audio technica CK7 today at comex. i have a pair of sony EX71. least comfortable: CK7 (heaviest) most comfortable: EX71 weakest amplification: EX71 best value for money: creative most balanced sound: CX300 beefiest sound: creative i tested all the phones with my iaudio U3 to even the playing field.
  23. oh, i was looking around for that album (dragonly) some years back. i have a track with mulligan and getz together ... truly wicked stuff. getz really sounds like lester young.
