Bose... the brand for people who don't know better. They have superb marketing and presence. In fact 8 out of 10 of my friends ask "Is Bose good?" when I tell them that I'm into hifi. If only they spent as much on R&D, product development and parts as they spend on marketing, they'd have some of the best gear around. One of my mates (who used to be so enamoured with Bose) just threw away his triports after I introduced him to ER4s for his long flights.

Thanks for reading There was simply no fight between the aurvana and the UM1 (esp at the then price of $219). Even now at the lower price, there is no comparison. Having reviewed a whole bunch of IEMs (I mean long term reviews, not just 30mins at Jaben), I rank the Aurvanas the worst of the lot. The microphonics by itself drove me crazy. The isolation was poor and the sound did not match its price. I honestly even preferred the sound of the E2C to the Aurvana. Too bad I will not get the chance to do an IEM shootout (too different price ranges across too few brands, making it difficult to set a fair comparison) The only good thing about the aurvana is that it is drawing people to the world of IEMs. Where previously, most people were not exposed to the IEM industry and they only knew about normal earbuds. These people who now buy the aurvana because of the creative brand will find that there are better stuff out there, and they will learn about shure, ety, UE, westone...etc. Which is turn will expose more people to how good music sounds. The sad thing is that they actually wasted their money first, before spending it wisely. Chris PS. Oct issue has the UM2

The E4C is a superb IEM. When I first reviewed it, I thought that was the one for me. I was about to buy it when I got the UM1s and UM2s to play with. The UM2s are just that touch better. The sonic signature of the E4C and the UM2 are quite alike, but the UM2 has that little smidgen of fairy dust that I can't put my finger on. That little omph that just takes your breath away. Listen to both before you make your decision. They cost almost the same, so if you're budgeted for that amount, its only fair if you try both first. Don't forget to try the ER4 as well, who knows, you might be a closet detailhead. btw, I bought the UM2s. Waiting for my custom earmolds to come in. Chris.

I lived with the Dr Amp for about a month last July05 (Courtesy of Jaben) and my review was published in August05. I used it to drive my Dynaudioacoustic BM6P, which is rated at 86dB at 6Ohm. Not a very easy speaker to drive. But it did an admirable job. Not the best IMO, not VERY good, but certainly passable. Very clean sounding but lacking bass. It also didn't have the juice to handle large scale classical pieces, but it was fine for radio friendly pop. Using easier to drive MS10i speakers, there wasn't much difference in sound, but I could certainly go louder and the Dr Amp exhibited slightly better control over the drivers. I did not like that it used 1/4-inch jacks for speaker output instead of standard terminals (even crocodile clips would've been better), because it meant difficulty if you wanted to use your own cables. The small size is awesome. In fact, I would certainly be tempted to run one amp per speaker, kinda like having active speakers. If you're on a budget and you're starting your journey into the hifi world, the Dr Amp is definitely a good consideration. Pair it with similarly priced speakers like maybe Wharfedale diamonds or Mordaunt Shorts, add a decent source your ipod or a reasonably priced CD player like the Marantz CD5400, and you'll be on your way to a more than decent budget system, sizeably perfect for a small HDB room, costing less than $700 PS. If it matters, I did give the Dr Amp a silver.

Someone left 990's in the office by 'accident' for us to review of course I kopped them before anyone else could get their grubby hands on them. Currently doing it's 200thish hour of burn in. Today is the day I go back, plug it into my system and start writing my review. *rubs hands* can't wait.

The lack of microphonics is simply amazing. Both the UM1 and UM2. Even the newer ER4 with the braided cable exhibits some signs of microphonics. I don't know how westone did it, but *clap clap clap*

There is one major flaw of the UM1. It's not the UM2....

my editor's in Japan for the sony dslr launch and he got to listen to these. He says they sound pretty good, better and cheaper than the aurvanas.. interesting. Sony mdr-ex90sl

I've read about this before. It's like having a 'master' eye and 'master' hand. You can actually hear better from one ear than the other. That's why you often see people tilting their head and pointing one side towards the sound system when they are listening to gear. I personally have better hearing from my left side than my right. I need to find this article, will post a link when I do.

This is ONE thing that everyone(including myself) seems to have overlooked though. The Aurvana comes with the most amazing case I've ever seen for an IEM. I think the case is even better than the Shure cases. Hard plastic, with a rubbery/thermoplastic interior that holds the earphones, and a cable management system. The best part of the case IMO, is that it seems that the length and breadth of the case is matched to the cable. If you wind the cable right just, the creative wording on the y-junction will fit perfectly in the front, and the 3.5mm plug will fit perfectly in the back. Non of that squeezing and adjusting like in the Shure cases. btw, I tried fitting the UMs and E2 into the case, but no joy. dangit! I would've kept the case if that worked The case was the ONLY thing I liked about the Aurvanas. Not that one should buy earphones based on the case, but credit should be due for this case design.

Make this your first SACD purchase. Put it on your system and try to distinguish all 40 different voices. this was an extremely special recording. The 40 members of the choir stood around an omni-directional mike hung about 10 ft from the ground. It's something special to listen to and a wonderful test track for a systems soundstage, depth and resolution. A friend of mine used this CD to audition the Senn Orpheus serial no. 152 for a special review in the mag. I missed that session...
