My humble comment on HuangYong's DIY amp

Recommended Posts

Glued the box! Now that's taking a leaf from Gtado Labs. JT is correct on the one. If there's anything rather unique about the 4556 it's the higher current.

Huangyong is sworn to secrecy by Grado Labs!

I hope something removable like silicone glue was used to seal the case. I can imagine the mess if super glue and the likes were used.

He already said the wiring is messy and the joints may need to be resoldered so I'm really curious as to gluing it shut. Now he has to undo it - hopefully without damaging the vinyl covered compressed paper box. Becareful huangyoung, that silver wood grain vinyl cover is not very tough and can rip. It's not as tough as real wood veneer.

Okie guys, at last this DIY Grado amp is completed and in my hands now after much scouting and pestering someone to make me a headamp. Oh yeah, Huangyong is da man. party.gif

Sound good with Philips 890, oh yeah I listen to mostly smooth Jazz & vocals, and is loving it . I can't describe as an audiophile do, but what I can say is well balance with mixed music & vocal and maybe a bit brighter while listening to jazz instrumentals. headphone.gif

This amp is very source dependant, i connected it to NAD C541 and the sound changes a lot as compare to pcdp.

Julery, if you use it with your computer, try to use some equalizer to tame it.Normal soundcard might sound bright.

Yes, I could feel abit different between your Nad C541 & my com source ( Philips Acoustic Edge Soundcard ). Maybe abit bright, or maybe just my music which are bright in nature. blush.gif

I don't think you can consider this amp a Grado Clone since the op-amp and the caps are different.

I've edited the topic to reflect that.

Agree with Rameish. If you're not using the 4556, then it's too far from being a Grado Ra-1.
