Ma6Jia 0 Report post Posted March 1, 2004 I need a reasonably good pcdp to go with my new babes (tube headphone amp cum pre-amp). Sony D-NE1, NE10, EJ2000 or Philips AX7201 any advise out there?
fuwen 0 Report post Posted March 1, 2004 (edited) Saw your profile. You are using A3.2 as a CDP, and do you mean you want to put the PCDP on your main rig? I am using AX7201. So I do a brief comparison with Panasonic SL-CT790 (which one of our mods Mackie found it very good) and find that the AX7201 IMHO is comparable to the CT790. Clean, detailed sound. I used HD600, driven by my portable amp HX-3. Music is a classical piece with lots of instrument solo and a classical vocal. Just a brief comparison only. YMMV. As for construction, I prefer the Philips, which is using Magnesium casing and the wordings are emboss. Panasonic is not bad. The Philips does not have a line out, and the LCD remote does not have bad light function. Since no line out may be a bit troublesome if you are using a headphone amp on the move and since the headphone has to be connected to the LCD remote out soundwise deteriorate a bit. Both players are still almost functional without the LCD remote (some iRiver models has no vol control on the main player). The Philips has bigger buttons good for on-the-move but need to lift up the player if place on the table. Panasonics has small buttons but is at the side so easier for on-the-table use. Ma6Jia 0 Report post Posted March 1, 2004 Hi Fuwen My headphone amp is not battery operated, so I can't use it on the move. Mainly I want to have a system in my work place, but I don't want to have a huge cdp on my working desk. Therefore I would like to consider a pcdp, and I can use the pcdp (w/o amp) on the move as well. A portable amp may be considered later.
cmk 0 Report post Posted March 1, 2004 Take a look at the iRiver IMP400, IMO very good SQ.
N@Z 0 Report post Posted March 1, 2004 Would you consider a smaller CDP like the Denon M Series? It would make a great office player.
Ma6Jia 0 Report post Posted March 1, 2004 Not that I don't consider, I can't. My office is open concept, 1- I can't disturb my colleague. 2- I will be fired if my boss see this thing on desk. 3- Prefer tube amp. Anybody using Panasonic SL-CT800 with headphone amp? How is it? Charismatic 0 Report post Posted March 2, 2004 Hi Ma Jia, if u want to use in office, maybe u could get a good pcdp(sony d777 or Iriver PCDP) and connect to hp unamp. I got a panasonics ct490, ok, but not as good as the sony and iriver. Just my suggestion.
Ma6Jia 0 Report post Posted March 3, 2004 I already bought a tube hp amp. I really want to make use of it. Since D777 head out is better then line-out, can I connect the head out to hp amp?
matbon0013 0 Report post Posted March 3, 2004 Hi Ma6Jia, Here's my 2¢ take on the D-777, with the headphone plugged to the headphone out the sound quality does not improve relative to plugging it to a portable amplifier via the lineout. That is how strong the headphone stage is within the player, this begs the discussions that amping this player is unneccessary. Cheers!
N@Z 0 Report post Posted March 3, 2004 Note D777 is only available used if you can find it. BTW, what tube headphone amp did you get? Any particular reason why you chose tube h/amp for pcdp?
Ma6Jia 0 Report post Posted March 3, 2004 Thanks for all advises. Then how? Looks like no pcdp is worth amping, no player for my tube amp? Sad leh. I hope nobody will ask me to connect it to a PC Sound card.
Ma6Jia 0 Report post Posted March 3, 2004 Long story about the tube head amp. First: I got the Philips HP890. Second: I found my AC3.2 cdp has no headphone out. Third: Nobody will recomment me to buy a head amp at about $500-$600 for HP890. Fouth: Start to look for cheap head amp. Fifth: Found one, headphone amp cum pre-preamp, really low price, but I have nothing to compare the sound quality. I have taken some picture on it, will try to post it soon. (actually I don't know how to put picture in this forum yet) I don't mind to share this head amp with you guys outthere, to see how is this amp. I need you guys to help to set this thing up. I am currently using a Technics old model pcdp, (borrow from my brother in-law) can't remember which model.

I've tried DT880/990/150/931, SR80 and HP890 with this combo and sounds good enough. Jade Giftshop at Shaw Tower/Centre (always mixed up) on Beach Road used to sell it for less than $250.
