tee 0 Report post Posted May 27, 2003 Hi Rameish, What is the best amp driver for HP-1 ? I miss the chance to listen to it previously. Could i do that one day soon, and then to pick some documentation on the deals that we have done... Btw, if my flights were to be re-scheduled, maybe i could join you at the elephant club this friday and talk more about it.

Rameish 0 Report post Posted May 27, 2003 (edited) Tee, Great, hope to see you there. Guy, Tee & N@Z, The HP-1 is a very balanced headphone. However, even I have trouble deciding which is better - the HP-1 or the RS-1. Since the RS-1 costs less than a HP-1 nowdays, I would stick with an RS-1. You can sometimes find one (HP-1) on head-fi but the price is usually USD 700 upwards. Ebay may be a slightly cheaper choice but you do take risks. Although one HP-1 went for USD800 on ebay!! I got mine for for less from MDB. Needless to say I will never sell it at the price I bought it for. However is someone offers me USD800 for it I'll let it go for sure! LOL. evil-zen 0 Report post Posted May 27, 2003 this one went for $1075. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...item=3025304648
tee 0 Report post Posted May 27, 2003 Hmmm....i will consider it seriously if my RS-2 could be traded-in for....say US$700 . Btw, what is the best matching amp to drive the HP-1 ?
N@Z 0 Report post Posted May 28, 2003 Evil, the auction for that particular HP-1 is supposedly for mint unused condition with all the lettering intact hence the high price. Fortune tellers over in head-fi forecast the Staxes to become the next flavour of the month so hopefully the prices of HP-1 will drop to more sensible prices. Then we all can have 1 each! evil-zen 0 Report post Posted May 28, 2003 first the eggos, then the ATs, and CD3000. now they are going for stax? the next flavour will be senn orpheus if flavours carries on to increase in price.
Rameish 0 Report post Posted May 28, 2003 Tee, I don't know what the best amp for the HP-1 is. I suppose the original HPA-1 by Joe Grado. However, the RA-1 is also good and so are the Cordas and Creek. Others like headroom also fare well. Since I have no way to test all the amps. I would say the Grado amps and the Prehead. But there's the Cary 300 sei which I havn't heard with the HP-1. It's a good amp. The Gilmore is another option, but I havn't heard it. Waiting for Evil to get his. N@Z 0 Report post Posted May 28, 2003 If the Cary I used to audition the RS-1 at MBD is still there why don't you try it? Evil, what version will your Gilmore be?
evil-zen 0 Report post Posted May 28, 2003 mine is the normal version. its taking too long to reach. shipped 2 weeks ago. i hope i don have to wait 1 month like wat ablaze encountered with his tubes.
N@Z 0 Report post Posted May 28, 2003 Normal meaning nomal V2 or V1?
evil-zen 0 Report post Posted May 28, 2003 the newer ones are all V2 already. mine is the V2 without any enhancements.
Rameish 0 Report post Posted May 29, 2003 N@Z, Most of the time when I go to MBD nowsaday, I ruch and pick up stuff, pay for it and zip right out. Will do it. I guess since I know the demo unit isn't going anywhere I can wait. Silly me. Have heard it with the RS-1 though :-)
tee 0 Report post Posted May 29, 2003 Hi Rameish and N@Z, thanks for your info, updates and recommendations. Your views are generally unbiased, giving me a chance to understand the products (eg. Grado) better and an opportunity to try them out for comparison (eg. HD600 vs RS-1). It is quite rare to have this kind of service even at Adelphi i must admit where each shop specialises only in one brand of headphone and/or headamp. IMHO, this is the beauty of one-to-one marketing, and the strength lies in understanding my personal needs and providing mix-n-match auditioning. This speaks (or sings) louder than any rave reviews seen in magazines. On top of that, i get personal friendly follow-up calls (such as one on tuesday 27 May) just to find out if my need for a portable headamp is urgent, and offer alternatives for consideration. On this note, could i try out your HP-1 one day together with Cary 300 sei for the ravishing sound that i believe would harmonise my moods further after sipping some wines and orangina.....knowing that i don't feel obligated nor oblivious to the songs. Play it again sam.
