cleaning solutions for interconnects

Recommended Posts

hi guys, i know that this thread is available in the FAQ section but i guess i would get better chances of getting an answer if i post here.

anyway, I would like to know whether I can use acetone to clean my interconnects and cans plugs? will the acetone corrode them? if not, got any other cheaper alternatives? And where to get them?

what do you guys use?

thanks.

One of the cheapest solution, literally or factually........

http://www.fairprice.com.sg/ProductDetails...D=0000000268616

(I'm not kidding.....anti-static too, great for cleaning cds too if diluted with water).

For greater and long-lasting protection against corrosion and such, Pro-Gold and Deoxit.

anyone tried basic contact cleaner? I bought one at SLT - philips 390 CCS - most shops selling it, its a spray. Bought it due to some hardware problems, for $4++.

This is the product description: "The cleaner improves electrical conductivity and reduces friction and wear. The cleaner is moisture, rust and corrossion proof."

Very versatile also can use on bicycle chain etc, though prob not as versatile as the kiwi biggrin.gif

I've been spraying it on my plugs and jacks. But still too early to see if its useful.

Don't spray direct on the plug as you will be introducing moisture to an electrical connection. Spray onto lint free cloth and wipe the plugs with it. Tell me if you see a difference thereafter.

acetone dissolves plastic and certain organic polymers you shouldnt use it to wipe the insulation of the interconnects

itself as an organic solvent will not be able to dissolve any metal oxides on the plugs..

if you are cleaning the exterior of the interconnect i.e. insulation, use something mild like alcohol and wipe slowly, pulling through too fast will wear out the wordings if you are not careful.. happened to one of my monster cables b4..

for plugs.. use the contact cleaner.. dont brasso it or use some industrial cleaner cuz you might wear the plating out..

USe Iso Propyl Alcohol. It cleans, dry fast and does not leave residual of its own. Those celaning solution would would some sort of their own residual.

Corrosion will affect conductivity. Hence, sound quality may deteriorate. Conductivity is also the ruling factor behind choice of gold and rodium plating for crucial contact points along signal path.

I bought one from a shop in Adephi this year. Cannot remember the shop name. Just google it and you should be able to find it. The shop sells CD.

They have the spray can or the liquid bottle.
