ASIO prevents pollution of resampling by Windows Kmixer (or Kmangler as it is known) The issue was bypassing Window's kmixer and the fact that Window's, kmixer resamples everything to 48 kHz, which is undesireable, particularly if you want to use your HTPC for high quality audio playback of CD's.
