A possible reason for the hiss might be the low impedence cans that you are using. I have always believed that the chain is only as strong as it's weakest link. With the IEM & cans you are using, you might not be experiencing the full strengths of the SMV3. My experiences with both still lead me to prefer the sound of the SMV3 with OPA 627. The real question, as you have stated, is whether the price difference is worth the improvement. In terms of value, the PAV2 is a no brainer and I recommend it as a great starter amp.

Had a Denon S10MkII before and build quality is solid! Well damped disc tray and the MkII version allows experimenting with power cords thru it IEC socket. The player has a nicely detailed yet warm sound. Although the variable output sockets allows hooking up to a heapamp for remote control of volume, I find the loss in sound quality hard to accept. In comparison with my current Sony player, I have to say that in my system, the Sony's tighter bass and leaner sound works better for me. I would recommend the S10MkII if you can buy one used. Should not give you any problems as I had a older Denon player that is still kicking.

I agree with Mackie and used to be a doubter too. However, p/cs do make a difference. Some more, some less. As with all components, system matching is key to getting the best out of your equipment. Suggest you do not give up on p/cs yet.
