  1. Wishlist, does your iriver have a line-out? if you're going to connect the amp to your line-out jack, make sure you get a portable amp with a volume pot, since you will not be able to use the player's volume control when the line-out is used. I understand tropicalrip's amps are meant to be plugged directly into the headphone-out, hence no volume pot.(correct me if I'm wrong. ) Oh, I nearly forgot, the porta corda 2 is also a highly recommended portable amp, and comes with an excellent mini-to-mini cable and 120ohm adapter. I haven't had the chance to listen to it though.
  2. Budget of $300! Thats more than enough for a portable amp. If you're not really that interested in DIYing your own amp(which is not as easy as it seems, despite what some would have you believe. you could end up wasting quite a bit of money and time and end up with something that doesn't work) anyway, and just want to get a good sounding amp for your money, try a Mint Meta or Pimeta from builders like JMT or Headsave. I use the Tempo from Headsave with my discman: Pics of my own Headsave Tempo I paid about 280sgd after adding the more expensive alps volume pot and extra buffers, before shipping. You can save quite a bit by not adding the extras, which are really not necessary for portable use . Go to headsave.com and check out the amps available, unfortunately Norm is going away for vacation and will not be ready to build any more till end January. He does excellent work though, and will answer any questions you have. I traded emails with him for nearly 2 weeks before ordering.
  3. Funny read, but there's a message the author of the article wants to convey. Article by Geoff Moss
  4. Instead of searching around for old players that might not be in good condition, I would suggest patience on your part(not easy, I know!), and save up to get a brand new entry level cd player from brands like Marantz or Cambridge Audio. I've seen some nice players from them for about $330(which is like what, the cost of 2 discmans??). For the money you get a brand spanking new player with headphone jack, and a 1 year local warranty. I think you'll actually save money and a lot of headache in the long run by choosing this option.
  5. I think this model was first released in 1986. Anyway, if the seller does not allow an audition, then don't touch it. If he/she does allow, test the player thouroughly to make sure everything is working as it should.
  6. Nice! You've really been posting pictures non-stop since you got the camera I see. I've read the head-fi thread you mentioned, was tempted to try but decideded against it because of (1)laziness, (2)I have more mini-to-mini cables than I actually need...long story. Remember to bring the cables over to Singapore for us to play with.
  7. All I can make out is the (1) is for your source, (2) is for your amp/preamp, i think, (3) and onwards I have no clue. Plug in at your own risk. I will bear no responsibility if your setup ends up in a pile of ashes. I barely passed my AO level Chinese.
  8. Having fun with your new camera I see! Mod edit: Erk! Sorry dude! Default. I'm sure it wasn't intentional.
  9. List of gear I'm bringing along(baring any last-minute changes), all for portable use: 1. Naz and Matbon's stuff of course 2. Grado SR80 3. DC powered Mint Meta 4. Headsave Tempo(Pimeta) 5. Canare mini to mini cable with switcraft mini plugs 6. Headsave mini to mini cable, also with switchcraft plugs 7. External 2x9V battery pack (housed in a dilbert mint tin) I wish I could allow people to audition my Etys but not sure how to handle the hygiene issue.
  10. 1. An archive for gear reviews and comparisons(the well written ones only) 2. A separate photo gallery to archive the good photos posted. Photos posted here tend to get lost after a while, esp if the person is using some free photohosting service. Just look at the post your setup threads on any forum, including this one. (I realise this will cost money, so it might not be practical) 3. More substance and less noise. (this depends entirely on the members, of course) Ah, yes, I agree with Mat about not overdoing the smilies.
  11. Your choice of cans will depend on where you do most of your listening with the Ipod. If its mostly at home, office or some other quiet indoor environment, the Grado SR80 is an excellent choice(I've borrowed my friend's ipod and used it at home with the grados). If you listen to the Ipod on the bus/ MRT when travelling to work and back home, then you need something with some isolation, or else you'll have to blast the volume to be able to hear clearly, and provide free music for the person next to you. The Etys do a magnificent job in both sound quality and isolation, but they're very expensive, and I understand from all the feedback on them, not for everyone, depending on ear canal shape, tolerance for microphonics, possible allergy to the silicon earbuds etc etc etc. And it takes a while to learn how to insert them correctly (again, this differes from person to person depending on individual ear canal shape) For myself the Etys work just fine.
  12. not you dude. Mod edit: av98 & augustineRS, since this is a WTS (Want To Sell) Ad, please correspond via PM in order to keep the thread clean of unrelated posts. Also applies to FS (For Sale) Ads. It normally is acceptable only on FYI (For you Info.) & where only necessary on IC (Interest Check) Ads. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated.

  14. Aha! To the person who found my Airhead too expensive, this one should be right up your alley.
  15. And as a public service announcement, I've dug up my 790 box from my pile of other boxes, and found the warranty card with dealer chop. here is the address of the dealer I bought it from: ANR FOTO & ELECTRONICS PTE LTD #B1-89 LUCKY PLAZA 304 ORCHARD ROAD S'PORE 238863
  16. If you really like the 790, I suggest you just save up and buy a brand new one, with ;line-out and local warranty from lucky plaza, you should be able to bargain down to less than the $190 I paid. Save yourself a lot of time and effort. Here was how I arrived at the decision to purchase the 790: At the Lucky Plaza shop: Me: Uncle, I want a discman with optical line-out. Uncle: Har? What out? Me: The white color hole Uncle: Orr....here *shows me a few models* *I look at them, decide to get the panasonic because I've always liked the brand. There were 2 pana models, one is more expensive but can play MP3. I don't use MP3s so I decide to buy the cheaper one* Me:"Uncle I want this one"*points to 790* "But can test first or not?" Uncle: "Can..." *After trying it out with my own CDs, I'm happy and pay up* And thats it. Not a terribly sophisticated decision making process, but it worked for me. I was selling my Airhead dude, not the headsave tempo. Nah, not yet.
  17. Agreed. I'm not saying you can't buy from ebay, just that you have to make sure its not a US domestic version you're getting, and of course that the item is in good working condition. Many of the head-fi guys rant about the fact that the panas they find in their own backyard have no line-outs.
  18. You must have gotten the lousier US model. Mine has the optical/analog out! Good thing you didn't buy my airhead eh? a reminder to those trying to save money by buying your pdcdps on ebay or overseas. discmans exported to US usually do not come with line out jacks because minidisc hasn't exactly caught on there unlike in Asia. The line-outs are meant for MD recording(on the vintage models they were meant for cassette tape recording).
  19. I think you had better find some way to get hold of somebody else's 790 and test it to see if you still need to turn the volume to 20/25. If you still do, your hearing is in serious trouble. If, you stop at 12 or below, then you just have a faulty 790. I hope for your sake it is the latter.
  20. Sorry, mine is also 25 max, not 30. Got confused with my MD player. 20/25!!????!!!!!!!! Dude, thats WAY too high!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I find your comment abt it being soft quite interesting. You might have a faulty unit, I think 20/25 will blow up anyone's eardrums.
  21. I bought mine for $190 at a shop in lucky plaza(can't remember which one). Mackie, you'll be interested to know that with my Etys directly plugged to it, 3 out of 30 is plenty loud for me! Gotta love the isolation factor. With my PX100s I have to go up to 10 BTW, I really hate the tiny crappy remote that comes with the 790. It doesn't help that the buttons on the 790 body are even tinnier and crappier. I nearly wanted to buy a slimx because I love the remote that comes with it!
  22. The recording sucks for this CD, if you still want it sell you for 10 bucks.
  23. Etys + META + PDCP = portable bliss I was just mentioning to someone the other day that the Etys are the very best $400+ that I've ever spent on this hobby. I'd love to find some way to audition some shures myself.
