The headroom max can double as a preamp. A pre-out is being added to my headphone amp as we speak so I'm now looking for a power amp myself.

Well, there's the logic in that as well, provided you're sure you'll be using them regularly and not end up with an expensive paperweight or two. I used that approach buying my body and lens, no regrets so far.

what's wrong with the Sigma? I've seen some impressive A3 sized prints from a guy using the lens.

What about the Sigma 10-20? Now thats wide. I'd either go with the Sigma if I want really wide, and the Tokina for the 12-24...unless I have lots of $$$ and use the lens very often I won't buy the Nikon. Perhaps the cheapest option is to stick to the D70s kit and take an extra 2 or 3 steps backwards?

If you look inside your M7 preamp you will see what looks like a small transformer. That's a choke. So I guess he's going to put a smaller one into the headphone amp to reduce noise.

You can say that about my work but some of our members' work is world class. For example, bpribadi's builts were awesome. Even the headfi members said his work looks so professional, cannot call DIY. That's class. Of course, if you mean design and development, then maybe but I really don't know enough to say. Maybe I should have elaborated on my statement. I said generally, not all. Yours and bpribadi's, as well as one or two others(like digi01) is pretty good. Firefox's work can also be put up there with the best on head-fi. However, the overall difference in standard is very obvious when reading the head-fi diy forum and our local diy forum. I don't see how anyone can claim otherwise.

Sigh, like almost everything else in SG, our market too small for the manufacturers to show this kind of interest. Some more got people like me, rather DIY than buy... Can't be helped. Even our DIY is generally of a much lower standard than the guys on head-fi.

Like Hansel mentioned, it will be physically impossible for any headphone to give you the "standing in front of the stage" feeling, as you call it. If you want your imaging to be front and center, I'm afraid speakers will be required. What you hear through speakers at the adelphi will be impossible to replicate with any headphone rig. That being said, if you have environment/space constraints, then a headphone setup will be much more practical.

One last push before I decide if I want to keep it or try selling on head-fi.
