  1. April's HWM (Hardwaremag) has a coverage of the major in-ear phones out there..... including the panasonic and sony models, on top of the entire shure and etymotic range. Chris ps : cheap plug, there's a review of the HD650 as well!
  2. who's going for steamboy and Innocence?
  3. Forget abt the HP ipod (ironically, HP's motto is "Invent" but they are just copying someone else's product). There is only ONE iPod, and that's from apple. Why contribute to Carly Fiorina's retrenchment package? btw, they have some of the worst drivers and tech support in the world, and I would know.
  4. I just read this in Stereophile http://www.stereophile.com/news/022105industry/ FYI. Chris

    Bose???

advice? Better to hear for yourself, than to 'hear that' is sounds good. Cos everyone has different ears and different tastes and liking/disliking a product is subjective. Bring your favourite tracks/discman/mp3 player down to these 2 places. Music by Design (Grado) and Hung Brothers (Senn, Beyer, AKG, Audio-Technica) btw, if you really want crystal clear, you should really consider stretching your budget to get the ER4. There is a guy in the classifieds selling it at $400 from Japan, brand new with shipping thrown in. PS. I introduced my friend to the etymotics, he travels very frequently (and he owns a bose). Guess which headphones are now in his trashcan and which headphones he uses on the flight? And guess which one is more expensive....

    New CDP

    are those DHcones for sale?
  7. more like a mod I read abt in headfi and tried it on my E2s basically, the crocodile clip came from the office telephone handsfree set. So I plug the earbuds into my ears, tighten, and clip it to my collar. and ALL my wire problems which I wrote about in my review are GONE. I can shake my head, move it all about, and it doesn't disturb the seal.
  8. should be, I got mine at capitol. strange thing though, it won't play on my discman. it'll play on the office computer, my CD player, but not my discman. drats! ps. Mackster, I posted something for you in the "desperately seeking cello" thread
  9. Very interested in acquiring this. please PM me if you are thinking of selling yours. Thanks.
  10. *points to myself* die hard fan I've even got all her lilith fair CDs and DVD, and all her DVDs. The VH1 is still my favourite.
  11. Read abt this hybrid SACD on the review of the Sennheiser Orpheus. Immediately went out to gramaphone to get it. Only one copy left Thomas Tallis : Spem in Alium Lamentations Mass and Motets It's by Linn, and it's awesome. It is recorded in a church, with the 40 choral singers standing in a circle with the mike on a 10ft boom right in the middle. I don't have SACD, so couldn't tell the surround effect. but it sounds brilliant on 2 channel anyway. Damn good recording, and nice music too. definitely adding this one to my demo list.
  12. January's issue of HWM has a couple of guys from their writing team going to listen to the Sennheiser Orpheus, serial 153/300. Lucky asses.
  13. Mackie, I found this at Borders. double bass. IMO, it feels better and sounds better than the Cello. The guy is playing cello pieces, but the double bass resonates better. IT sounds magical.
  14. Just bought this at Gramaphone. not sure it it's new or not, but it's great
  15. sorry bout that. but the link to the site needs registration, so I though it'd be more convenient for readers. btw, someone posted the same "cutnpaste" in head-fi as well.
  16. I've fixed the wire-behind-the-ear problem. actually, got the idea from headfi. I got a crocodile clip thats meant to hold the wire of the handsfreeset of my office phone, used that to attach the cable to the back of my collar, and hey presto, the cables don't move anymore when I move my head. Also, I got my hands on a RA Clone (THANK YOU TROPICALRIPS!!!) and the E2s sound much much better. Am in the midst of writing a follow up review for them...
  17. E2s sound better than the mx500 if you're interested, I wrote a comprehensive review on the E2. but it'll take a little effort on your part to do a search and find it. It's somewhere in the portables forum.

    New Toy

Found this on the CES site Shure's new model to be released =============================================== Jan 06, 2005 08:30 Shure Previews Latest Additions to its Premium Line of Audio Accessories at the Consumer Electronics Show 2005 NILES, Ill. and LAS VEGAS --(Business Wire)-- Jan. 6, 2005 E4c Sound Isolating Earphones and QuietSpot Inline Headset on Display at Shure Booth Shure Incorporated today announced the latest additions to its award-winning line of premium audio accessories: the E4c sound isolating earphones and the QuietSpot Inline headset for mobile phones, both of which are being previewed at the 2005 Consumer Electronics Show (CES). Like all products in the Shure consumer audio line, the E4c and QuietSpot Inline utilize Shure's unique sound isolation design to prevent ambient noise from compromising the listening experience and to deliver the ultimate in audio quality. Already winning industry accolades for superior design, the Shure E4c sound isolating earphones have been named one of this year's International CES Innovations 2005 Award honorees. Incorporating the same precision components used by professional musicians to monitor their performances on stage, the E4c earphones feature High-Definition drivers with Tuned-Port technology for an ultra-wide frequency soundstage with brilliant highs and extended bass. The perfect accessory for music lovers who are serious about sound quality and detail, the E4cs are also the lightest in Shure's family of E Series earphones and mirror the iconic design of the iPod. Shure is also building off of the success of last year's debut in the headset market by showcasing the QuietSpot Inline headset for mobile phones. The QuietSpot Inline leverages Shure's trademark sound isolating design for its earpiece and couples it with its exclusive VoicePort Inline microphone, allowing users to hear and be heard no matter what the environment. The Inline joins the QuietSpot Boom headset as the second option in Shure's line of premium accessories for portable audio and wireless users, as well as for mobile gamers. "Shure's consumer offerings are designed to meet the needs of savvy users who want to bring their listening experience to the next level without sacrificing the characteristics that they've come to appreciate: portability, sleek design, and superior audio quality," said Mark Karnes, General Manager of Shure's Personal Audio Business Unit. "As great strides continue to be made to improve today's portable devices, such as MP3 players, mobile phones, and DVD players, Shure is dedicated to maintaining its focus on innovation and always offering the latest in premium, high-quality consumer accessories." In 2004, the Consumer Electronics Association estimates that consumers will have spent approximately $934 million on portable MP3 players - more than double from 2003 - which is helping to foster demand for many complementary products, including Shure's earphones. While the success of the MP3 player has created an unparalleled market opportunity for accessory products, Shure also recognizes that each year the Consumer Electronics Show is home to the debut of tomorrow's "must-have" gadgets, and as such, the entire line of Shure earphones is designed to work with all standard media devices, regardless of codec compression technologies. Karnes continued, "Shure has a unique opportunity to fill a very pressing gap in the CE market with both our earphones and headset product lines. Up until this point, bundled earphones and standard headsets have compromised the performance of today's leading media players and mobile devices. Only Shure delivers products based on nearly 80 years of experience in the professional audio industry, and as a result, sound quality is taken to a whole new level." About the Shure E Series The E4c sound isolating earphones join three other options in the distinguished Shure line, helping to guarantee that Shure has the perfect match for a wide range of audio needs and preferences. At $99.00 USD, the Shure E2cs are a consumer's first introduction to premium audio and an ideal choice for upgrading bundled earphones. Both the $179.00 USD Shure E3c and the new $299.00 USD E4c are ideal for consumers looking to match the look and feel of the iPod or other portable media players, the latter offering even more detail across frequency ranges. Lastly, the Shure E5c sound isolating earphones, priced at $499.00 USD, create an audiophile's utopia, featuring dual Live Performance drivers, coupled with an inline crossover for faithful reproduction of precision highs, natural mids, and full-bodied bass.

    nonOS Dac

Has anyone tried this? 47 labs nonOS clone I heard the 47 labs DAC at the ISSE show and it was awesome. I found out that one can order copies made from Taiwan, at abt 100UKpounds. I wonder if it's possible to build one here? Chris
  20. Hey all, went for ICT. hush hush, been missing for weeks. I just received this email from PSaudio abt a new product. <snipped> Sneak preview of a new product I am not supposed to be blabbing about products before the light of day but I got so excited over this little beauty that I just had to tell you. We've designed a state of the art headphone amplifier around the new Gain Cell technology. When you turn the front panel volume control up and down you change the gain of the amp rather than attenuate the signal, as in a Control Amp, and guess what: it has a USB port on the back in addition to RCA inputs. Engineer Jon Magnussen came up with the idea because he wanted to sit at his desk and listen to headphones (slacker) but was unwilling to listen to the crap coming out of his computer or compressed MP3 player. He just demonstrated this cool new product to me last night. We put a CD into the computer's CD drive, connected the new headphone amp up via the USB cable, put on a pair of Sennheiser's and in about 2 seconds we were listening to great sound! I was blown away. We then took our high end SACD player, put the same CD in and listened again: yes, the player was better, but not by leaps and bounds. What this means is you can have a great high-end headphone amp, and control center, connected to either your stereo system or home/office computer. You just gotta see this thing in action and give it a listen. We'll do our best to have it available for Christmas. Hint, hint! I am installing one of these new headphone amps, getting a pair of Sennheiser HD600's and tuning the world out at work! Never thought I'd be able to do this. Good work Jon! More news later on this killer little headphone amp. See you in December! Paul McGowan <snipped> later. Chris
  21. anyone actually watch this? I was on a bus going home the day before. Had my E2s pluged into the radio when it came on. I switched over to the tv mobile station for a laugh and got a shock. most of them sound really bad, poor tone, lousy pitch, out of key. When I unplugged my earphones and listened to them on the bus' speakers, they sounded better. I got home abt halfway through the show and switched on my telly. My telly is connected to my amp and my dyns. They sounded awful again. Even worse than on my earbuds. When I turned off the amp and just used the TV speakers, they sounded not that bad...(ok, I admit, not the same person nor same song...but you get the gist of what I'm saying) Does mediacrap doctor the sound somehow? or is that why these people are getting votes...because most viewers only "hear" them thru the lousy tv speakers? Chris
