hm..

To me yes, it is obvious on the headphone out & noticeable enough on the line out if compared back to back. In isolation & hearing my EJ925 (with amplification normally) last night & the night before I didn't miss the D777 so unless you must follow the bandwagon there's no point paying for the big bucks they're asking for unless it is cheaper, like Mat's relative Bargain.

Here's another close up, it's called a SerPac translucent case. You can get it in different colours. There's also a normal black or grey opaque case which is not as nice. The novelty is you can peek into the innards like sheer clothing, since you guys like 'porn' alot! Also the light can be enclosed within the case & glows as such.

Oh yeah, the toggle switch next to the headphone out is for the power on/off switch & the one next to the volume knob is for the 'Blend' switch. Different version of crossfeed. It doesn't work on modern recordings more for older stereo/mono recordings like Jimi Hendrix, Beatles etc which have very hard left to right channel seperation it sort of blends the sound a bit more to the center (but not quite) The effect is noticeable but very subtle.

PART II - DT880 vs HD600+clou red

 

Gear: Meridian CDP 206 -> DNM Reson with Bullet plugs -> Monster META(AD8620, quad EL2002 buffers/channel) -> see above

 

Music used:

Chieftains – The wide world over

Ray Brown Trio – Live at the LOA, tracks – The real blues & Monalisa.

Eric Clapton – LIVE ON TOUR 2001, tracks – Tears in heaven & Reptile.

Depeche Mode – Exciter, track – I feel loved

 

-> HD600

CT – Very airy, weighty low end, detailed, not as laid back/veiled (due to cables?). Drums have a powerful weighty sound. Crisp vocals, highs & instrument seperation. Vocals really stand out. A lot going on in the music. No longer sounds subtle like before on PCDP. Very dynamic in details. Can hear the sound of drum stick’s thwack hitting the drum skin. Monster META very powerful only requiring 9 o’clock on the volume knob as opposed to KurtW Meta 11 o’clock in order to get the same moderate to loud volume levels (that was using the DT880, it needed higher volume settings in this application as well).

DM - Foot tappingly good, powerful & unstressed sound. So enjoyable that I can’t keep still. Out of head experience. Large sence of scale.

RBT – Double bass sounds fantastic very full bodied sound. Tinkling of piano, slap of string, drums thwack, audience participation all comes alive. Sounds a lot better than I remember (Meridian perhaps?). I think some of the newer components that were installed by KurtW on to this amp are well & truly burned in by Mat.

EC – Sense of scale potrayed by the sound of audience & reverberations in a big concert venue. Laid back sound is there but not detrimental as it's in keeping with the live 'feel'.

 

-> DT880

DM – Sound has less impact or weight but still punchy (maybe Clou Red improvements to HD600) but the bass is slightly better defined especially bass extension on basslines. Highs are nearly the same, oddly vocals seems recessed (slightly further back presentation).

EC – Had to turn up the volume slightly to nearly 10 o’clock to compensate for the less impact & recessed vocals. Music is also foot tappingly good, pace again is slower though. This is my impression probably due to the extended bass. Treble sound a tad sibilant (require more burn in?) Scale is not as big as HD600 & reduced air/out of the head experience.

RBT – Double bass sounded leaner if you’ve heard double bass it in real life this sound is less convincing but in isolation it is still good because of the prominent extension. Slap of strings on fret is very noticeable & annoying at times but this means detail retrieval is good as it can pick this subtle sound.

CT – Drums sound more natural, panning of sound channel to channel is smoother or more seamless. Good detail retrieval, Differentiation between loud & quieter instruments playing at the same time can be heard very clearly.

 

 

Conclusion

 

The HD600 fared very well against the DT880 because of the cable upgrade & I feel the Beyers need more Burning-in in order to beat them. The Senns are slightly coloured (mids & bass) by the cable but it’s sound so satisfying (Normally I have a wide grin & foot tapping while in sonic nirvana). The DT880 is inherently more neutral & since I am not used to the sound my impression is less favourable, maybe my opinion might be swayed after 100 hrs burn in. All differences are slight (except for weight & bass extension) but noticeable enough for me to conclude that the DT880 errs toward neutral sound whereas HD600 combo is coloured towards my taste or I am used to the sound due to familiarity. DT880 reminds me of the etys but with bigger soundstage & that nice bass extension. Which do I prefer? Not conclusive yet until the post 100 hour burn in. If the sound has more weight I might have preferred it straight away, as it is I still preferred the HD600 + Clou Reds but the DT880 is close behind.
