It was designed to be used with a PC or Mac and if you so desire, the line out of a player powered by the wall wart. While there is no built in internal battery, but still you can plug the AC adaptor and power up the X-mod via power plug to mini USB adaptor, then connect your player to the X-mod to hear the difference.
