  1. Guy, You're not the only one who don't hear the diff between power cords. I tried several type, all diyed and can't hear the diff. They're are already burnt in for months, and now I just used them without any consideration with how they affect the sound(if at all). If I need new power cords, I just get some 110V type from my company and change the plug. These 110v handle higher current (not that I needed it anyway) and are shielded hospital graded. Best thing free for me.

    Power Cords DIY

Agree, best is to keep them apart. But you should see the mess behind my setup, simply a terror to keep them tidy. So kiasu abit, power cord shield, and interconnect also must shield. But my experiece with video cable that the Belden 1694A has excellent shielding. I was lazy with runnning five runs of 5 metres 1694a for my VGA cable. So running parallel(horror) to it is a $1/m unshielded power cable. Amazin video quality with no signs of artifact and ghosting. Better than those 3m VGA cables that have distortion even when not close to the power cable.

    Power Cords DIY

I also did the expensive red stiff belden cable and the other 19634 power cable.. But my degraded ears could not tell the diff between them. Now I save some money by getting those 110V shielded cable from my company and change the head to our local standard 3 pin plug. Shielding is important if the power cable is running close to the interconnect. Don't want those EMI from power cord to leak into the signal cable.
  4. Yup, I recognise the transformer used. It's also available in the RS component catalog. It's a dual primary transformer, can be configured either as 115 or 230..
  5. From the diy project at Jan's site & Headwise, the transformer the HA-1 using has dual primary. Technically it can be change to 110V or vice versa for someone with electrical experience. But for end user, I think it's safer to do as Rameish suggested, order a 110V direct from Jan.
  6. 50/60hz won't affect or damaged your charger. Important is the voltage requirement
  7. For charging batteries and other application, it doesn't matter if it's 50 or 60 hz. Coz after the 50hz or 60 hz AC current is being rectified, the end result is just the DC current. Only audiophile with golden ears would be bothered on whether their equipments are getting 50 hz or 60 hz.

    Portable amps

I'm using a model of panasonic which already became obselete. But they are roughly the same size as this Yuusa brand, http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showdetl.cf...t_ID=3533&DID=7 I bought two of the 12V 4AH type..

    Portable amps

If portability is not impt, you can try using Seal Lead Acid battery(SLA). I'm using those for my Meta for 24V supply. THe charger for SLA can be had for less than $50. One charge can last almost forever. Been using for about 3 months, still going strong.
  10. You're right. In the end is the speaker coil that get burnt. Which might result in a shorting of the coil and that draws more current than the amp can handle, hence amp also burnt
  11. No, DC blocking caps are connected directly in series along the signal path. Normally at the input of the amplifier to block DC voltage. No caps along the signal is the best. But to protect your amp, in case of a bad source, the DC blocking cap is a neccessary evil.
  12. Being a high pass filter it should be the bass that's is attenuated and thus suffers. When doing up a amp with DC blocking cap, I usually try not to use a cap with low values, becoz being a high pass filter, the lower frequency tend to be attenuated and thus bass suffers.
  13. So what's your deadliest weapon? A flying CD or a pair of RCA cables used in nanchaku fashion?
  14. FreeBird - Lynyrd Skynyrd .. Their triple guitar attack sent me beyond heaven. Love those sounthern rock. Whole lotta Rosie - AC/DC
  15. Morgan Jones, isn't that the EMP clone? As for the transistors, I haven't decide whether to embark on the Gilmore amp yet. Just too busy with other projects to begin another one. Hope I'm not botherin you if I decide to seek your help in acquiring the transistors maybe later. So let's see the pictures of your Morgan JOnes..
  16. Hi Jarthel, Good work on your Gilmore. Wish I could do one myself, but my diy knowledge has limited me to opamps. May I ask where did you get your chassis? Saw a similar one at Larry hifi, but it was very expensive. And do you have any good source for transitors. Saw the schematics of the Gilmore needs the 2SK389 and 2SJ109. They are very difficult to find, search a whole of Sim Lim tower also cannot find. Thanks. JT
  17. That 'can't take my eyes off you' tune played by a bunch of beer bottle musicians wannabe.
  18. Yup, my DT880 is not bright at all. As for amp, quite happy with it running off the meta42(BB OPA637).
  19. Actually Quek is the owner and administrator of Xtremeplace. But Xtremeplace host also has it's several downtime and I haven't experience any downtime with echoloft.

N.Oaks, If you're looking for Bi-polar E-caps, one good place to look for it is Koba @ 3rd storey People's Park Centre (joining OG via a bridge). Problem with bi-polar E-caps is they seldom have audiophile model. If you look hard, Koba might have the Nichicon brand. If you're willing spend more money, try Larry's hifi, at the basement of the same building, for Blackgates bi-polar E-caps.. But they are very Ex.

Strange on the widening of soundstage. My experience with the cmoy modified Linkwitz Crossfeed is that it reduces in-yer-head effect and like Mackie said, smooth transition from L-R-L.. But sounstage did not widen, it's as wide as my two ears apart. I need a bigger head to enjoy wider soundstage.
  22. Wah, congrats to you Oak.. Me also a expecting father. Mine due should be in the late sept. Our class at KK also cancelled til further notice. Also expecting to commence on July.
  23. Heritage still playing there? I've been living a hermit life for over 2 yrs since married.
  24. Usually something else will fail first before the motor gives way in a hard disc.
  25. Go for the OPA637 if you're consiering it. I've tried Opamp rolling between OPA2134, AD8620, AD797 and OPA637. To me, I finally chose OPA637 as the opamp for my meta42. It's clearly ahead of the rest imo. For cost efectiveness, the AD8620 would be a good choice, as I liked more than the OPA2134. While AD797 sounded terrible. Maybe it wasn't meant for audip application.
