Well depending on the amp you use or the amount of burn in, the highs of the HD600 may sound harsh. The HD600 sounded really smooth on the Sudgen and the Corda HA1 (modded). As for the HD650, the highs are smoother and to a certain extent it is slightly rolled off. A good amp is need to bring out the highs in the HD650. That is IMHO and YMMV.

I guess it maybe possible for a person to have one can to rule them all however that will be based on his preference. However I am sure he is sure to have some compromises. As for me I believe in at least 2 cans to cover all the genre of music. I guess a decent pair of grado and a pair of senns will get the job done.

THe HD600 was using the Oelhbach replacement cable.

Very true, the HD650 will sound very veiled, heavy and muffered out of the box, it needs about 300-500hrs before it will sound at its peak. The treble will sound very recessed as well even after 200 hrs of burn in. As time goes by the sound will thin out slightly and the treble will start to come forward after 300hrs of burn in. The only amp which brings out the best in the HD650 in my opinion is the Cary SLI80. In triode more, vocals are lush and full bodied. If you close your eyes you could reach out and touch it and feel it. The following setup ranked in terms of my preference are as follows: Audio analogue Paganini ->Cary SLI80 Consonance 1.1->Sudgen Headmaster (modded) Rotel 971/ X-Ray-> Micro Zotl Consonance 1.1 / Rotel 971 ->Corda HA1 Consonance 1.1/ Rotel 971 ->Grado RA1 All the setup were auditioned using the Equinox.

The thing I wish to warn you regarding mods is that they will not make day and night difference. The sonic signature of an amp depends on its design. Mods such as changin of caps, only add refinements to sonic signature of the amp in most cases. However this sonic signature also depends on your source and interconnects. Therefore if you really like the X-cans V3 then mod it to improve it and not mod it to change the sound. Last but not list it is impossible to use one headphone for all genre of music, you need at least 2. If you finally decide to mod the X-cans V3, you can always contact the resident DIyer, firefox. Drop him a PM. However he is only available on the weekend since he is still serving his NS.

Do not forget to compare it with the DT931 and the DT831.

Not too sure if you can get them locally, guess you need to order them from the website itself. BTW aint much to compare between the stock and the after market cables. They are definately a step better than the stock. You just have to find one that suits your taste and most importantly budget.

I just place all the cones facing upwards. The two rear cones are near the feet of the player or amp and the front cone is adjusted according for balance.

Recently I borrowed a few sets of the DH cones from Rameish to try it out for fun. The 1st set I borrowed were the Jumbo and they were placed under my player. I was pretter skeptical that these things would actually work. However after using them, there were improvements in the sonic signature. The sound became cleaner i.e. the blacks are blacker. Bass seems to be slightly deeper and tighter. With these improvements, I borrowed another to place them under the amp. This time round, the treble became cleaner and sibilance were reduced. Will post the pics when I find my digital camera.

The PSU is essentially a torridal transformer. You can follow the instruction here and DIY one yourself.
