  1. Most amplifiers nullify DC offset via coupling capacitors. You do not need a DAC to negate DC offset. All tubed amplifiers that have transformer coupled outputs (ie. not SET) will also work just as well.
  2. I would advise everyone here to avoid using your laptop's headphone out as there will more than not likely be massive DC offset there. I have measured 3 computer headphone outs now: 1. IBM T41 notebook: 120mV(!)/80mV 2. Dell desktop: 45mV/320mV(!!!) 3. HP desktop: +70mV/+45mV

cmk, is the 'Aaron' you refer to in your OP me? Just wondering...
  4. As per thread title. Am thinking of picking one up (secondhand) to have a listen to and for modding purposes and was wondering whether it was worth it. Thanks for your contributions!
  5. glad you asked - it's rather unusual imo. it has options for pure SS (OPA627 or your choice of opamp), pure tubed (2x ecc82, 2x ecc83) or mixed. I intend to one-box it with a M^3, and have an output option for preamps/my eddie current HD-25.
  6. Hello all, Just an update/additional details - the 8x TDA1541A DAC I will be building has the 8x DAC chips in differential mode. The USB input has been redesigned to incorporate semi-asynchronous reclocking of the I2S output. The design is in the finalising stages right now over at diyaudio.com - PCB creation will follow soon. The 8x TDA1541A chips were a @*&^ to get - they are quite hard to come by, and quite expensive (US10 per chip). I managed to get 9x from the same batch, and even picked up 3x S2 'double crowns' along the way. So I guess I have committed myself to the project already with my purchase of all these DAC chips.
  7. evil-zen, fwiw, the usb-2-i2s board which you speak of can be found at http://www.dddac.de/ anyway, the dac is still in the final stages of prototyping over at diyaudio, so don't hold your breath for a quick completion.
  8. Yes that the way to go and sooner or later you end up buy the ProTool system which all lot of the music industries using.. any recommended online reading barradio? i don't like building things without understanding the theory behind them first.
  9. Hello Mackie, I paid just A$300 for mine. And mine's cosmetically more or less in new condition. Yes, I think I got a fantastic deal. Anyway, FWIW, there have been some very very tempting offers for my CD94 already. I'm actually considering some of them as in direct A-B (corrected for volume) I might actually prefer the Zhaolu to the CD94. Also, I'm building a new DAC that has 8x TDA1541A chips, so... Right now my 'master plan' is more or less to move to a wholly computer based rig, with USB-to-I2S conversion with sync'ed master clocks. You should check over at diyAudio.com, there has been some very interesting progress made wrt computer-based rigs there IMO.
  10. So far this month - - HagUSB - Zhaolu D2 (CS4398, maxxed out DAC section, DY2000 & 2xOPA2107) - Meier Audio Corda HeadFive #369 and special mention goes to... - Marantz CD94 mkII (in near-perfect condition too!) Impressions will follow shortly for everything. The CD94 alone is nearly 15kg! It's transport is also made of solid metal. I've heard stories about the CDM1 transport, but - wow, this is something else in real life. Some of the older members on this forum may have a little more to add regarding the CD94.
  11. would you be able to take payment via paypal? i'm currently studying in aust and closed my s'pore bank acct before i left.

  13. i was a spec while NSF, but now currently am studying. when i get back they $&W^# want to promote me to officer - that'll extend my commitment further. ugh. anyway, the NSF days were some really fun ones. I was a pes B (wore spectacles), and while fully combat fit was posted to a damned shiok vocation. basically for 2 years i was a spec's mess regular. then there was this time we had this 100m range, and i got lane 3. each time i raised my rifle to fire, *bang!* and my target would fall before i pulled the trigger. turns out the next THREE lanes next to me were all bobo-shooters who were shooting MY target. i got an almost-perfect score (28/30) and returned 17 unfired rounds to the armourer. you all should have seen my OC's face. then there was this chao keng king in my camp who reported sick every other week, and always somehow got att C. BMO (brigade MO) got on his case and barred him from leaving camp and kept him in observation, so what did the cockster do? call his parents and say he was depressed and was thinking of suicide. even scratched his wrists to prove he was serious. of course each time he was out of camp, during spot checks we would find that he was at orchard. but each times he got his parents to step in, write to mp, claim mistreatment, etc. i daresay in his 2 years he spent maybe only a quarter of that in camp.

for all those who mention computer power supplies being 'noisy', well yes, that is true. but does it really matter? consider that your typical switching computer psu is located mere centimeters away from your cpu, which not only has billions of transistors, but does a couple hundred million or so calculations per second... ...all without any error. or how about the meters of pcb tracing in your computer? no shielding for that either. or the data cables hanging free inside your computer? no shielding for that either. and yet trillions of calculations are performed per day, flawlessly. what many people fail to realise is that a cd transport reads your cd 'afresh' each time it spins up. it corrects and fills in the gaps on the fly each time you press play. if you properly rip a cd, you have no worries with that. you'll always get a perfect play, everytime.
  16. Am considering selling my E-MU 1212m as I will be going overseas to study. Soundcard was bought July 2004. Card is in mint condition. Contacts have been treated with ProGold, but no mods have been done to the card. No box, original driver CD or manual though. I'm asking $265. Make me an offer and please PM me if you are interested. This goes for $369 new.
