  1. not easy huh? what's your budget? u might have to spend a little more trying to amp this bugger. try the Higher Fidelity HA-01 at Stereo E. or even the Harman Kardon AVR145 wide-bandwidth receiver. both have ease of drive with the 701. with the Harman receiver to can use its treble contour to tame a little of the highs. AKG belongs to the Harman family and somehow their products have a certain synergy with each other. when u get the right match, very few current production headphones can touch the 701 for soundstage, timbre, transparency & musical immediacy. but it's a bi-tch to amp.
  2. i smell vapor...but hopefully not.
  3. congrats! tried the expensive zu and cardas cables with the 600 but i dunno, somehow i feel happy enough with the original.
  4. feel the same way, have both cans and the 600 is in a different league. the 990's highs are not as silky plus the bass is more tubby than the bass detailing of the 600. also find the 600 more balanced than the 650, especially when listening to classical & jazz. but between 990 & 880, the 990 is more balanced somewhat.
  5. you won't regret taking the plunge for the D2k.
  6. Grados are the other option but u might not like the comfort. they're supraaural cans which press against the ears. some heads/ears can take it, but others can't. Goldrings are circumaural so they rest around the ears making them more comfortable. i think it's best to try both for yourself rather than just reading reviews.
  7. hippity hop! one of my fave genres. it's ok on the 600 but awesome on my D2000.
  8. u can save money on an amp by getting cans which are easy to drive. for your budget i would recommend the Goldring DR100. i prefer the 100 to the more exp DR150, it's not a harsh in the highs. plus the 32ohms is an easy drive and the cable is detachable so u can playaround with other snakes. last heard at Stereo E.
  9. is it still available? how much? i have the 600 which has the same driver and sound texture but superior staging.
  10. looks like nothing more than OEM Shures. prices dun look any cheaper. tragic.
  11. if this is just for the impressions, then it's 5 times more ex than i expected.
  12. one thing's for sure, the denon will THRASH the Senns on the kinda music u listen to. plus it's very much easier to amp than the Senns. the pleather earpads will get warm if u not in air-con room. warmer than Senns. but the denons fit so comfortably on the head, much the opposite of Senns' vice-like grip.
  13. Hip-Hop, R&B, Rap, Electronic. and that's how the the D2K rolls. denon bass detail is awesome, makes the Senns' bass more rounded, Beyer bass even more rounded (except for Darths which i've never heard). a wild analogy: denon bass is like a Harley exhaust while the senn bass is more like yamaha/suzuki/honda/kawa. i have both 600 & 650, they're better at more music genres in the sense that they do better jazz & classical than the denon. both senns are also better all-rounders than dt990/880 & akg 701. but for your stipulated genres, the denon is the pick, by far.
  14. precisely. that's why it sounds good. <400 is cheap.
  15. Denon D2K = $400 from pricejapan
  16. heard the lot and the Denon will walk all over the 990's.
  17. it hurts mine after half an hour. terrible comfort but nice dynamic drivers.
  18. both are great cans so it's matter of preference really. HD600 has slightly lighter bass and a more balanced sound, better at genres like jazz and classical then the HD650. but if u listen to stiff that need more oomph in the lower end, then the 650 should float your boat.
  19. good suggestion. the HD600 is probably one of the best all round cans. the K701 does classical & jazz much better but not as good as the HD600 when it comes to pop, rock, dance or hip-hop. plus the K701 is nasty to amp. the Denon D2000 is better at pop, rock, dance & hip-hop but can't really cut it for classical or jazz. and the D2K is even easier to amp than HD600. different cans for different genres so it's really down to music preferences. if u have a higher budget to go for more than 1 pair of cans, then i would suggest cans that specialise in your fave genres. but if u only want 1 pair of cans that can do the jack of all trades and master of some not all, the HD600 is the way to go. even better balanced than the HD650. the HD600 can be perfectly amped using the $150 Dugood EA-600 which is designed and voiced for the HD600. EA-600
  20. in that case, pls check with Frankie of Well Audio for further advice.
