  1. Lemme guess, working in a 3d animation/wed design studio? Oh, Quadro FX.. too bad ain't dualies.. PC for graphics is norm nowadays, well for production anyway. Simply because it allows more codecs and easier/cheaper to set up with powerful GPUs and renderfarms. On mac systems, I'm limited.. for example software: FCP and shake/AE. For pc, i can play around from 3dsmax/maya/renderman to combustion/AE and the list goes on. Nowadays the demands of photoshop can be kept up by a PC also. Even in dtp, InDesign can be handled by a PC. The only difference in both system is the process priorty. Seems mac will allow the design software to run at top priorty no matter how many items are running. For a PC, you have to really streamline your workflow to prevent any hiccups. I still prefer the PC. I don't have problems if I need to bring home my work to do, plus it's less costly for me to set up a editing station for pc vs a mac. ok
  2. I work on a project basic at a production house.. so naturally most of the time projects and co-workers are involved in music one way or another. Was introduced to music setup from working with some interesting experimental audio/visual art projects. and my company store has plenty of monitors
  3. sounds like a graphics workstation!! guess I must be lucky to have worked in an office where almost everyone's using cans/iems.. a big mix of akg and beyers, and a bunch of ue iems.. hmmm
  4. I believe both have a different sound. Probably on par in terms of everything else.

    pc sound card

eMu cards are not for recording only. People use these because it offers many output interfaces. M-Audio would be good, stay away from SB X-fi or anycard that has un-natural DSP built in. For watching movie wise, X fi might make for a more pleasurable experience with it's DSPs though. It's up to you.
  6. Ikea racks aren't really stable.. Using them for shelving but it still shakes a little with the construction on going just 100m away. Worst, the site operates 24hrs shifting tunnel pieces of the newer MRT circle line and I hadn't a chance to enjoy my cans nicely
  7. +1 yes, you don't need an amp for MS1 to sound great.. amping will make the MS1 slightly better. SR60 on the other hand, improve marginally with an amp.. I reckon you'll be better off with the MS1, because it's the sweetspot of most handphones value wise.. but don't take my word for it. Bring your player down and have an audition. You must hear it to believe it.

Again, when using computer as source for music, it depends on what format/bitrate/source are your digital files in. Match your source to your equipment. an M audio would fit it just fine if your source is downloaded. If captured from your CD as lossless, then maybe a better card will suffice.
  9. better to use the budget and get a closed headphone or an IEM. At these levels of listening, prepare to lose your hearing!! Using IEM or closed headphones might be better for you.
  10. I'm looking for a sturdy, no fuss rack. Looking for any value for money rack, best if it has options for spike footers to reduce possible ground vibrations. Where can I get them? It would be best if possible to include details of the rack plus prices and photos. Saw some old threads about queenie racks and cloned spider racks from china. Are these any good?
  11. are you listening at a little too loud?

    nEar 04 speakers

Well actually, monitor speakers were not meant to produce any serious bass. Period. Simply put; in an audio engineering sense; bass is mostly limited to almost inaudible vibrations that give some form of adrenaline and tempo/pace to a piece. Monitor speakers are designed to reproduce as accurately whatever that is audible, sacrifising a little here and there. They not meant to be musical. They are meant so I know how much adjustment I should make besides watching my vu meter on possible clipping. Subs just spoils the magic of monitor speakers. try listening to recordings that has both very low and high volumes of voices, example some of bjorks or accapella tracks and you'd know putting a sub in the chain is just gonna make you miss alot of detail. And about the bass that is already in the music is there, just probably the perception of it has been very badly polluted by too much of the hifi sub and loud club culture of today. Attend any live sessions, the bass ain't that heavy, but when listening to it from a player, even I might have a tendacy to turn up the sub a little more than realistic.
  13. so many clubsnapper here.. hmm..
  14. for that price, you only get a minor improvement only high end purist will identify with. I believe in achieving sweetspots in terms of value for money. save the rest of the cash to enjoy the music. Many people tend to spend TOO MUCH time and effort in the equipment and forgot the fact that music is to be enjoyed.
  15. no experience with linux. So far tried rockbox only because of the various formats I have. MPC, flac, ogg and the navigation design that I prefer more than idiot proof apple itunes. plus the fact that's it customisable as you can write your own wps templates and design your interface with photoshop.
  16. $50 isn't much for decent headphones nor earphones. You have 2 options. 1. Get any branded one you deem nice looking enough and within your budget and be satisfied with it, and never come back to this site ever again. 2. Up to a koss or sennheisers within a $100 headphones and start surfing this site more often.. soon enough you probably blow a few hundreds to thousands on equipment if you aren't discipline enough. For your questions; 1) Anything 32ohms and below is easy to drive.. generally if it's too high and you'll need amplifiers to drive them decently 2) Doesn't matter, freq range won't mean you'll hear more or it'll sound better. 3) Means volume at certain loads. again, no issue as long as you stick to 32ohms and below.
  17. ALAC and FLAC are on par. but rockbox just sounds better. Hopefully a better less buggy "hang my ipod" firmware comes out..

    GS1000

do i sense a tweak coming on? hmm..
  19. the cracking is clipping due to either some bassboost or the internal amp of the player. If the technics PCDP doesn't have a lineout, you might still get the crackling sound past a certain volume on the pcdp with an amp. However it would improve if you amp the lineout instead, the signal coming out is cleaner.
  20. AKG k81dj, if you can get em.. try em out.. you might like em
  21. careful when using dehumidifying agents. You must maintain a certain humidity.. too dry and coatings will chip, sponges will flake, rubber becomes sticky. I had a camera lens turned like that when I over zealously loaded tons of silica into a dry box. now i use a electronic dry cabinet with humidity setting.
  22. 1. Bootloader is same. firmware is different. 2. Depends on how you use it. lossless codec + crossfeed enable will drain faster than original f/w. Mileage will vary with usage, & definately drain faster than original firmware. 3. It doesn't improve the sound, so to speak. the codec is better than the original, you'll get a better imaging/soundstage (even w/o crossfeed yet) and slightly better dynamics. The original ipod firmware sounds compressed & in your head. 4. Yes, I experience heat issues on ipod 5g with the hdd spinning more often because of huge lossless files and the ipod hardware not designed to handle such loads. again, on flashbased nanos, it shouldn't be a problem. 5. The tutorials are very comprehensive. no way you could screw up the installation. *other info read rockbox forum.. still quite problematic with some formats on 5g.. read up more on your nano there to get a clearer picture

    ipod line out

there's a gui rockbock installer. Idiot proof like MSI format, no need command line based... Get from ipodwizard.net IIRC.. den just copy the themes to the ipod and ur off! Rock box rock.. but still alittle unstable. made my ipod hang sometimes plus runs hot.. so reverted back to original. damn.. can't play my lossless codec stuff.. INSTALLER HERE ROCKBOX GUI
  24. those sound so familiar, yet so distant...how long were you on tekong? A god-damned 5 days.. remembered how I would remove my camo and webbing and go get some fresh rations from the various canteens and doing numerous vehicle drills at night lol!
  25. well, best to get cheap players. Those that can tahan you through your route marches, in the middle of the night turn outs & of course your outfield trips in Marsiling, Lim chu kang and tekong.. especially all those star navexs around tekong, woodcutters trail and .85
